Here's a question for the females on the group (although I'd welcome any
stories from men too). I'm wondering what you all think, watching a show
with a man with quite long hair, what you think of men with long hair.

I personally have hair a little shorter than AP's (which I've had long
before I even knew about Highlander). Constantly, I'm hearing jokes
about "hairball", "get a haircut", "Cousin It", that sort of thing. As
far as I can tell, most women either really like long hair on men, or
really hate it. Is it just the people around Johnstown, or is this the
same all around? How many of you who drool over AP want him to get a
haircut?

Also, what do you think about the various ways DM wears his hair? I
never get more jokes than when I dare do anything but a normal ponytail.
Holding it back with anything besides "gummies" gets ridiculed, and that
sort of half ponytail, half down thing is made fun of too. I think it
looks pretty cool, and I do something more interesting whenever I can. I
don't think it looks "feminine", nor do I think it looks stupid. So,
what do you all think?

Guys, do any of you with long hair try any of these different ways of
tying it back?

Matt

I think AP has the best looking hair I have ever seen. I wish my hair could
look so good. His long hair is componet of his sex appeal. ( his cute
butt is the major factor.----- sorry +++++ that comment was out of line but I
couldn't help myself ).

I wonder what kind of shampoo AP uses? His hair is so perfect especially
when it is in the ponytail. The ponytrail is really attractive.

what do you think?

I was in high school during the mid-70's. My friends and I thought long hair on guys
was way cool. It's now the mid-90's and my opinion really hasn't changed that much.

My personal preference has always been for men to have short, well groomed
hair (like Methos <g>)...but that's just my preference. I have friends who
are nuts for men with long hair.

As to wanting AP to get a haircut, no I don't want that. He's one of the few
men who I like in long hair <g>.

I adore that clip he uses to hold his hair back. As for the different
styles...I like that half ponytail, half down thing he does. I also like the
straight ponytail but I don't usually like the way he looks when his hair
isn't pulled back from his face.

I think he's got a hairstylist following him around
making that hair look perfect all the time....

I have long wavy hair a bit like AP's, and mine has
*never* looked that good for more than, say, two-and-
a-half minutes at a stretch....

I tend to go for the ponytail/French braid/etc. just
to keep the stuff from getting downright frightful
by mid-afternoon....

(I don't recommend the French braid for *you*, Matt. Might
not be the masculine look yer aimin' fer.... ;-)

In general I have always liked clean, well kept long hair on men
(although it does not look good on all men). DM/AP looks great with
long hair!! In current time frame shows I usually like it best pulled
back (except in bedroom scenes) and I think useing a classy barret(?) to
hold it looks mature and sexy (so if anyone makes fun of you - they're
either immature or jealous - or both) In flash back scenes I like it
long, loose and curly like he wears he right before and after he "died"
the first time. He usually looks good with it short, too, but NOT when
it's slicked in some weird way.

If you don't want to use a barret try tieing it back with a leather
thong wrapped aroun a few times to make an approx 1" wrap. That would
look masculine and very sexy.

I believe in the olden days it was thought that if you cut off your hair
you would lose all/most of your strength!<G> (I can't remember which culture)

I love long hair on men AND women. This new (yuck!) short hair craze drives
me nuts! IMHO short hair makes almost everyone look older...

Personally, I've never had short hair in my life. Usually it's to my
waist (right now it's in-between) I do like well-groomed/trimmed long hair,
but I think that this persecution in our society of men w/longer hair is very
predjudiced. All through history men have had long hair & worn curly,
powdered wigs etc!

I'd hate to see him get his hair cut. I do know that he wants to though.
Long hair *is* a bit more of a hassle; I think lots of people cut it
off just for the convenience of short hair. I guess they don't care that
they're cutting off their crowning glory! Just try to ingnore the asinine
comments and various jokes. Maybe you can come up with some witty retorts
<VBG> Please don't cut your hair! I *hate* what they did to Methos' hair
this season. He looks like he joined the skinheads or just got out of the
Army or something.

>what do you all think?

I like all the ways that he wears his hair. I *really* like the 1/2 ponytail
1/2 down thing he does too. I think it looks great on guys. I have yet to
see a guy that I think looks better with short hair. I guess maybe if one's
going almost totally bald it's better to cut it (poor guys) :-(

I know that I may be from a more liberal state (CA) but, everyone around
here is going with the no-hair/super short hair thing too. I will add that
as opposed to real short hair I'd rather see a guy shave their head entirely
like some of the athletes (but, I don't really like that either; they need
to have a really nice shaped skull)

So, when people give you shit, you just give it right back to them!!!
Some people just don't appreciate beautiful long hair. The trend towards
longer hair will be back in style in time<BG> Everyone is very conditioned
by the media/ads/fashion towards really short hair right now.

wrong!"

I like whatever looks good. Some guys, Like AP, look TERRIFIC in long
hair. I think really fine hair does not always look good in a long
style (on either males or females). IMHO, AP's hair is one of his best
features. It really enhances the flashback scenes, too.

I love long hair on a man.

I have a story to tell you. It's even true. :)

I was watching the performance of a semi-pro Celtic band once. One of
their members couldn't make it, so they had their sound guy come up on
stage to play hammer dulcimer.

Now, the sound guy had baby-fine, absolutely straight, platinum blonde
hair down past his butt, and he was over 6 feet tall. He usually wore it
just in a pony tail, and wore a white T-shirt, which made him look rather
washed out in general, since he was so fair.

But in this performance, he was wearing a royal blue tunic top with
little mirrors in it, and his hair was loose. Since the performers were
sort of in a semi-circle and he was at one end, his back was clearly
visible to the audience over toward the side where he was (including
yours truly). His hair, which had just hints of silver and gold to it in
the midst of the white, contrasted beautifully with the blue in his shirt.
The stage lights glinted on the mirrors and on his hair.

At intermission, when the members of the band were mingling with the
audience at the front of the stage, the sound guy was rapidly surrounded
by a knot of women who were stroking his hair and braiding it. Women who
had not gotten there fast enough to be in the inner circle reached in to
touch his hair (I was in this group). And standing slightly farther away
were the men in the audience with average-length hair, staring at the
entourage around the sound man and then looking at each other, puzzled,
as if to say, "What does he know that we don't?"

I wish AP would grow his hair out more, and I'm disappointed when I hear

Who is making fun of you? I bet it's the guys. They're just jealous.
If you've got it, flaunt it.

Since Highlander, I'm much more attracted to men with long hair than I
used to be. Adrian Paul is good looking, well built and has really
nice hair that is kept looking great all the time. I find long hair really
disgusting if it's not kept super clean. Also, I think heavy-set men look
silly with long hair.

Hair length is not all that important to me as long as it is the best look
on the individual. There is something very sexy and fascinating about long
hair on a man though.

I am certainly not anxious for him to get his hair cut even though he looks
great with short hair. I prefer the way the long hair is used to accentuate
his features.

As for the ones ridiculing you, they just need to get over it. I would
like to pass along a funny story I just heard. My neighbor's husband has
long, pretty, blond hair. They like to go to a cerain restaurant and hang
out in the lounge usually at the bar. One night a couple of guys came up to
hit on them not realizing of course that they were a MAN and a woman. They
played along for a little while but when one of the guys started playing
with the husband's hair, he finally turned around. I would love to have
been a fly on the wall in that place. Enjoy your hair! We unfortunately
do not have the luxury of living many generations to be able to try out all
the differnt hairstyles possible. Pick the one you like and have fun with
it.

OK - I'll bite. I LOVE men with long hair - except when it gets as long
as mine (mid-back) then I get jealous 'cause most mens hair when that long
hangs better than my fine hair. The ONLY time I get 'gah, gah' over AP is when he
wears his hair down to his shoulders (not pinned at all). My heart stops. Poster material.
This is an ideal length for guys - touching the shoulders (IMHO). My cousin
steven would disagree with the long hair thing. He just recently shaved his
entire head and he 'claims' that women have been beating down his door (when
previously that 'door' was gathering cobwebs).

Honestly, it's sexy on some guys and looks horrible on others. AP
doesn't have to worry, though. He looks foine.

My fiance's (fiancee's? he's male =)), hair is longer than mine, and mine
reaches easily down between my shoulderblades in the back. Half the time
I love it, and half the time I hate it. But I think the hate part is
mostly jealousy, as he has gorgeous hair. =)

>really hate it. Is it just the people around Johnstown, or is this the

It's not the same all around, that's for certain. =) If he cut his hair,
many women and men who drool over that hair would be crushed.

I kinda wish he'd try braiding it, myself. And I really like the half-
pulled-back look on him, he's one of the few people I've seen able to wear
that style well. The "plain-old-ponytail" is the simplest thing to do with
long hair other than leave it down, and I love the Celtic clasps he comes
up with. =)

And I personally thought Methos' hair looked much better when it was longer
(in "Methos", and "Finale 1/2") than when he cropped it ("Chivalry" on).
The men of Highlander all have wonderful hair.

Peace,
Barb

I love long hair on men, but it really depends on one's overall style and face
features. For instance I like Pierce Brosnan, but I really dislike his long hair look,
though his hair is luxurious and thick. The other thing is, keeping long hair looking
somewhat decent is almost a full time job. But hey, ware it any which way it
pleases *you*, and use smart hair ties, they look great on men! And Matt for
those who tease you, send them to buy a book of XV-XVIIIcc. paintings to get a
much needed education on *manly* styles of dress through times.

I think it's not so much the length of the hair, as how well it's taken care of. I had long hair
for quite a few years, and I'd wear it all sorts of different ways. I rarely had anyone say
anything bad about it. And women tend to love playing with it. There seems to be a novelty to
french-braiding a guy's hair. It was a real kick when I was doing childrens' theatre. The girls
were always asking to braid my hair. Now that I've shaved it all off, women want to rub my bald
head. :>

AP has nice, well-kept hair (hey all those make-up and hair people on the set help!) and he wears
it well. Richie or Joe would look rather bad with long hair.

OK, I'm not female. Lets get that out of the way first. <grin>

I found Matt's question interesting, as well as the many replies.
For my own two cents, I would have to say that AP is one of the
few guys I've seen who looks really good with long hair. I work
on a college campus and have seen a few male students with long
hair who look OK too. But I tried growing my own hair long enough
for a ponytail (partly because my 12-year-old daughter thought it
would be cool if her Dad would try that) and I looked like the
rear view of Duncan's horse. I'm being generous. Looked awful.
Just wasn't workin' on me. One measure for me was that the day
after I cut it I had several compliments. That suggests that some
friends probably thought I looked ridiculous but just hadn't
found a way to say it!

Matt, my advice to you thought is simple. If it looks good on you
and you like it wear it! ;-) - Dave

You'll have to ask the person who takes care of his wigs. He actually has
short hair, because it's easier to put short hair under a long wig than
vice-versa. I'm not just speculating - my friend the foley artist for HL
sees AP when he goes in for voice-overs (and of course I pump him for

I love it. Especially if it's long and healthy and shiny... sorry, I zoned
out for a minute there. In my less sober moments while doing the Seattle
club scene, I have been known to surreptitiously (sp?) "pet" a guy's hair in
a big crowd. Never been caught yet, but when I'm sober I ask permission.

What?! That is so sad. Actually, I was once at a wedding in a small,
conservative southern church and I told a guy I liked his hair (it was very
long and lovely). It took him about five minutes to realize that I wasn't
being sarcastic. I wished I could smack the people who gave him a hard time
about it.

I love the variety. Why should men be limited in the ways they're "allowed"
to wear their hair? I have male friends who will french-braid their hair,
clip it, etc. and I say more power to 'em.

Well, it partly depends on the guy and the hair, but in general,
aesthetically speaking, I love long hair on a man. It's a large part
of AP's appeal, although I'm sure I'll still luv 'im when he cuts it.

From a purely practical point of view, in my personal experience, <eg>
long hair on a guy can be kind of a nuisance at times 'cause I get
hair in my mouth. The only solution is for the person with the
shorter hair <veg> to be on top.

Actually he uses a wig for the short hair scenes. It is amazing how much hair

Speaking for myself, Matt, I think it depends on the man. I like long
hair and frequently admire gentlemen with long hair - however I
persuaded my husband to cut his because it just didn't look right on
him.

Also, it has to be well cared for. There is nothing worse than long,
untidy, dirty locks. I don't like dreadlocks (though they do look
good on men of colour - they just don't suit caucasians).

I don't like hair that is *too* short - it looks aggresive and butch -
skinheads are a no-no; but sometimes bald is sexy. However, if a
gentleman is losing his hair, he should crop what is left - long with
a bare spot looks silly. (and if he brushes it forward ROFL).

All in all, I have to repeat - it depends on the man. Wear your
hairtie with pride and ignore the catcalls. (and yes the 'topknot' or
half-poytail is unusual to see on a man but some suit it).

I love long hair on men too, although I can understand why AP wants to
cut his hair short. From looking at HL, I get the impression that AP's
hair is fine and wavy like mine. Like mine it probably knots something
terrible and the slightest breeze blows it in his face, something he may
not like. Also, if he doesn't keep it pulled back, he probably ends up
eating it along with his food (a gross thought). It takes a ton of
conditioner to get a comb through it and if his scalp is the least bit
sensitive, no matter how much conditioner he uses, it probably still
hurts. I must say that if I thought I looked the least bit attractive
with short hair, I would be in my hairdresser's chair in a hot minute.
Since I don't and I am just vain enough, I put up with the problems of
having long hair. I am sure it is in his contract that he cannot cut his
hair (or skydive or mountainclimb for that matter). Also he is probably
making a lot of money and the series is making his face very well known,
so he puts up with the problems of having to keep his hair long. But I
bet, the minute his contract is up, he is in a barber's chair saying "Cut
it short short *short*". Ten will get you twenty that next year this time
he is sporting a crew cut.

AP just seems to be one of those men who look gorgeous no matter what he
does with his hair. Some men just can't get away with having long hair.
It makes them look to feminine. Long hair on AP simply redefines his
masculinity. Wearing it in a pony tail gives him a chiselled appearance
which I happen to like on men. Put a chiselled face on a rock hard body
with washboard abs and I will melt (doesn't happen often).

If long hair makes you feel like this, keep it and don't let anyone
convince you to cut your hair. Besides, if you feel good about the way
you look, you probably look damn good.

I think it depends on the guy. IMHO, bigger, more muscular guys can
carry it off better that really scrawny guys. I think the hair is
too overpowering on skinny guys - makes them look skinnier. AP is
one who can definitely wear it. Overall, though, I tend to prefer
shorter hair. Hubby has a buzz cut, so maybe I'm biased :-).

This thread is just dying for a poll. Okay, which guys on tv or movies
look good in long hair and which ones don't?
My votes:

Good:
Adrian Paul (of course)
Kevin Sorbo - *sigh*
Lorenzo Lamas - scruffy but cute

Bad:
Fabio (I know he only does commercials right now, but his hair just looks
weird. Besides, the man shaves his chest - Eeeeewwwww!)
Jean-Claude Van Damme - just looks goofy with long hair
Any guy who also has a long shaggy beard - definitely a turn off - I don't go

Gee, Carollee, that sounds like my hair too. Only it's not as fine as you
describe. And I was toying with the idea of chopping it all off, I'd love
to have short, sexy hair, but then I just realized that I am not ready to
part with my hair yet.

I agree with you too. On some men, I love the long hair and on others, it
just doesn't work.

She's probably right. And keep it, especially since it sounds like you
like so much. And all those other guys, well, they must have Hair Envy
them, so just ignore em and show off your long locks. Wear it well.

Matt,

I am a woman who LOVES AP's long hair. I also love it on my husband,
whose ponytail is now about halfway down his back. I think most men
look great with long hair, as long as they find a "style" for it and
don't just wear it limp, draggly and scraggly looking.

I have been looking for the tiebacks that AP wears in his hair for my
husband to use. My hubby has to keep a nice appearance for work, looks
terrible with his hair pulled back from his face, so I came up with the
haircut which Billy Ray Cyrus has now made famous, but before BRC ever
came along.
His hair gets pulled back into the ponytail. From the ears forward it
gets cut short, from the ears back it is long. In the winter he will
wear it down because he works outdoors and it keeps his neck warm. In
the summer he wears it in a braid because it is cooler that way.

For those who get onto you about your long hair, tell them this:

Long hair AND earrings are VERY much in style for men nowadays.....

AND, by the way, I think AP keeps a bit of his short at the front, too.
I've noticed it in several shots where he has just been fighting, or
where the wind is blowing. There seems to be some short spots in the
front.....

I love long hair on men! But it has to be clean, no split ends,
and very natural looking. My absolute favorites are lean men who are or
who look like Native Americans, and Neopagan/SCAdian men who do Scottish
personas and wear Great Kilts. Needless to say, AP makes me swoon
because he does both on the show!

CO>>How many of you who drool over AP want him to get a

He'd look splendid with or without long hair, but the long hair
is something very sensual and inspires some really hot fantasies of
playful things that could be done with it if I ever got him alone in the
appropriate intimate setting! ;)

A single long braid down the back, held with either a small coated
hair tie, or, better yet, something leather and Native American looking,
is really nice, especially in the summer. Especially if the guy wears
black T-shirts and jeans. (Not too tight!)

What do I think about men with long hair?

I married a man with long hair (worn in a ponytail) and let him know that
while it was his choice whether he cut it or not, I liked it long. It's
still long - longer than mine, actually.

He grew a beard a year ago, too. Now he's even cuter.

I agree. My husband, for example, is fairly round and cuddly. He looks
quite good with long hair - I just wish he'd wear it loose once in
awhile. He keeps it very nice, and it's thick and coarse and doesn't
knot easily (as opposed to mine.)

Yes! At least, he could wear them to SF conventions.

Sounds like my husband's style. He can also tuck the ponytail into a
collar if he wants to look more conventional (as he did for a Chasidic
wedding we attended.)

Adrian's fan club sells the nifty tiebacks. Some fans have turned
them into pins or necklaces also.

The fan club can be reached at

PEACE: The Adrian Paul Fan Club

or you can get information via e-mail from PEACE...@aol.com

The e-mail address is for Peace business only, not fan letters to

It's funny that somone should agree with me. I, personaly, absolutely
ADORE long hair on men -- if it's well taken care of, that is. I have seen
about fifty too many guys sporting shoulder-length greasy hair.

I arrived twenty years late for the hearing. But it's still fascinating.
The question is whether the women who commented here - are still connected :)

What do you think today about long hair for men?

Asks the question - are you still keeping your long locks?

Long hair is fine, preferably not full of mud and dirt. It's been a long, long time. Some have passed away, some are only on Facebook. Say, there's Highlander Heart: https://www.facebook.com/groups/120891714654089
Highlander Rewatched: https://www.facebook.com/HighlanderRewatched
Blood of Kings: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1551389528504825

There are several more specific groups. Adrian's Angels, The Peter Wingfield Fan Club, The CCG page run by Blood of Kings. Fanfic groups.
