Who is that masked man?Slan Quince shows up at the antique shop to menace
Duncan after Richie has already broken in. His main pecularity is that he likes
to wear a mask during swordfights. Slan leaves the scene saying that he only
wanted to meet "the charming lady of the house". Slan watches Tessa looking
for opportunities to waylay her. When the presence of Connor foils one
opportunity, he goes off on a wild ride reminiscent of the Kurgan in the first
Highlander movie. Eventually, Slan does succeed in taking Tessa as a hostage,
and threatens to use Tessa's power tool on her. During the fight that ensues,
Slan places his sword across Tessa's throat. He reveals that he's called The
Cat because he likes to play with his victims. He then departs saying that he
wants Duncan to think about his situation. When Slan calls to say that he's
waiting for Duncan at Soldier's Bridge, Connor slugs Duncan so that he can
arrive there first. Connor fights Slan until he falls wounded into the water.
Then Duncan arrives to put a final end to the masked k'immie.

Questions For Further Study

1)How successful was the mask as a protective tactic?

2)Slan's tendency to threaten the people his immortal quarry cares about is
similar to the strategies of a number of k'immies. Compare Slan to Felicia
Martins, Kalas or Kell.

3)Slan's wild ride was obviously intended to remind HL fans of the Kurgan.
Does Slan have any other resemblances to the first HL k'immie?

4)Does Slan have any other resemblance to cats other than playing with his
victims? How do the felines of your acquaintance feel about Slan being called
a cat? Are there cats carrying protest signs picketing in front of your TV
every time you watch the tape of this episode?

Help! My cats are threatening to post protest messages on ATH. They are
sharpening their claws. If I survive, I will post about Connor in The
Gathering next week.

Not much. I think he wore it mainly for intimidation.

There seem to be two social classes of immies: those that happily play
the Game, and those that fight only reluctantly -- call them the
headhunters and the avoiders. Apparently, when a headhunter wants to
force an avoider to fight him, he often uses his quarry's "family" for
leverage.

He strikes me as a Kurgan wannabe, which is probably what got Connor so
ticked off at him. He also reminds me of a gung-ho WWF wrestler: as
much pose as substance.

What he doesn't know about cats would fill a boxcar!

Not exactly, but they do walk back and forth flicking their tails in
disgust.

Now another question is *who* started calling him a cat? Was it a name he just
gave himself or was it given by other immortals or Watchers?

Ciao baby!

Slan and Felicia had a similar MO: hurt the people an Immortal cares about,
then go after them. Kalas and Kell were a bit different. They were after one
particular Immortal who they believed wronged them, rather than hunting any
Immortal just for the Quickening.

Slan struck me as a toned-down version of the Kurgan. He wasn't nearly as good
a villian, IMO.

LOL!! I don't think any of the cats I know would take too kindly to being
compared to Slan.

Shomeret, I'm not current enough on my HL watching to answer the
questions about Slan, but I love the part of your post about the
picketing cats!

I have a cat who pickets in front of my cereal bowl every morning. If
they were organized, there's no telling what cats could accomplish <g>.

Watch out for those irate cats. Anybody remember the PURR episode of
the Avengers?

Mary (will try to get her homework done for the Connor segment next
week)

As a protective devise I just didn`t get it; IMO Slan wasn`t pretty
enough to make a fuss about (especially when juxtaposed with Connor and
Duncan) and he is an immie, so any scratches he receives are going to
heal right up again, except for the big one on his neck.

Fairly obvious tatic to bring someones moral down. Not even a teensy
bit as effective as Kalas.

He`s supposed to be a great stomping amoral brute. IMO he didn`t pull
it off as well as The Kurgan, but then the Kurgan had more screen time.

Not graceful, agile or pretty enough for a cat. My cats wouldn`t
dignify the question with a response <g>
