Oh yeah, saying it was a joke makes up for the way my heart was pounding, the

I tried to convince myself it did not happen.
I am sure if any of his family frequented ATH, they would sure be relieved to
hear it was a joke.
I just recently had a death in my family and a joke like this is NOT funny
under any circumstances. Now before someone comes back and posts "He was an
actor, you don't know him, get a grip" let me explain a few things.
Yes, he is an actor and yes, I do not know him personally. I have met him and
spoken to him though. I feel like I know him. He is a warm, funny and
interesting man. I feel a connection to him. I felt such a kick in my stomach
when I read that cruel post. I felt much the same when Princess Di was killed.
I think I speak for many when I say we feel like Peter is part of our lives in

Man, all of this trolling is getting ridiculous. What rerun hell will do to
some people, I guess.
Yes, I believe that PW is currently (hopefully) in Vancouver filming a
couple of guest spots on TV shows, which is why I didn't believe this in the
first place.
One of the reasons I have always hated practical jokes is because they can
become mean-spirited very quickly. They are basically meant to make the
butt of the joke look foolish. So, Marcus, good luck trying to find some
forgiveness on the NG. You won't be getting any from me.

You are going to have do more than say sorry in this perfunctary way.
As it happens two days ago a good friend of mine died. She was only 51.
Two years ago my Grandfather, Mother and Grandmother died. My cat died.
Last year my best friend's mother died, my other friend's father died,
another friend's husband died. Two of my neighbours died.
All of the people above (apart from the first listed) died when I was on
vacation or had gone away for the weekend to a convention. Yesterday I was
away at a High School Reunion. It had gotten so that I began to fear any
kind of travel. To have found that PW - who I HAVE met, and DO know
(slightly) had died while I travelled again, would rather have set the seal
on any further attempts at travel.
You are very, very lucky that the only contact I am likely to have with you
is by e-mail or newsgroup. This is not to be taken as a threat. I do not
make threats. (I make promises - and I always keep my promises)

The case in point is cruel; it is not, however a joke.
Humour, I believe, is intended to inform, instruct, and lighten one's
life. This instance did nothing like this.
Whenever one takes an oppportunity to put someone else down, hurt them,
or make them (from one's own perspective) look silly, one is feeding an
internal need, I think. I try to practice what I "preach" here. That
is, I examine *why* I might want to take such an opportunity and learn
what is hurting me that I would want to hurt others.
Okay, I was at church today....and I'm the 5th generation decendant of
preachers....I promise *not* to get on a soap box too often!

so many in such a short time, I'm getting *punch drunk* - I really do NOT
need to lose another friend, even if he is someone I've only met once and

>LIGHTEN UP!!!!!!

No.
Tell you what. I'll post about how your friend died yesterday. You can
panic, call his mother, and all his other friends, to check if it is true.
His mother hasn't heard from him for a few days, so she starts to panic.
He's not available on line, and isn't answering his phone, so she panics
more. Eventually she works herself into such a state she ends up in
hospital herself.
Then I say "hey, April Fool - sorry if I got you a bit upset"
How funny is that? You gonna forgive me in one moment?
Peter Wingfield is an actor - yes. He is also a person. He has parents, he
has friends, he has a wife.
I'll give you a "What If?" scenario. We know that journalists use the 'net
for research. Suppose someone from one of the *gutter press* (or even the
more respectable papers) happened to be lurking here? he's got a scoop, he
thinks, and immediately starts calling PW's family and friends to hear their
reactions. PW is in Vancouver. Perhaps he doesn't phone home every day.
He may not even be near a phone, depending on where they are filming. So
they have journalists camped on their doorsteps telling them that Peter is
dead.
Bet they would LOVE the joke. (to my knowledge this has not happened - but
it could have so easily) (I was getting phone calls from half a world away
to see if *I* knew anything, and having been out of touch myself for a
couple of days, I must admit my heart stopped for a second or two)
And btw, I cried all the way home after those calls, just *thinking* it
*might* be true - because each death brings the last one (and the first one)
right back to mind. Even if you weren't close to the person, it reminds you
of the one you WERE close to.

No, it shows that WE CARE about people. We would TRULY mourn Peter were he
to be gone. We would mourn for a talented actor gone, a fine young man cut
down in his prime, for his family and friends who had lost him, for all our
own losses of recent years that this would remind us of.
Not funny, JSP, not funny at all - and just for your information a newspaper
once printed an obituary of someone who was not dead. Person then sued the
paper for HUGE damages because of the pain and distress caused to his
family.
Marcus's best course of action just now would be to lie VERY quiet. He does
have a history of less than inspiring posts on this and other ngs (which a
quick search on Deja News with his e-mail address will get you) (and a habit
of changing his name - but not e-mail addy)

I don't think people should have to "lighten up" about this, death affects
people deeply and I also think that ridiculing Jette's own personal pain is
very petty and inconsiderate. She and everyone else on this ng have a right
to be hurt and angry. As for taking this 'soooooo seriously and being so
outrageously indignant', it is *extremely* serious and the individual who
played this cruel prank was outrageously indignant to common decency and
etiquette. There was a complete lack of respect for PW, his family, his
friends, and his fans. I do not believe forgiveness is impossible (I do not
believe it is ever impossible) but it will take time for people get over
this, and perhaps some never will. The individual did apologize, but that
doesn't mean things will suddenly be all better.
I lost two friends in an accident this year and the shock and suddenness of
their deaths was very painful and frustrating. It is *never* a joke.
peace,
Andrea
I used to watch and love a show called Kindred: The Embraced, it was not the
most successful show but I liked it. I rarely missed an ep. It had been
cancelled by Fox but there was talk that it might be revived in syndication by
some European company which, now excapes my memory. It stared Mark Frankel as
the Vampire Prince of San Francisco. Mark Frankel was handsome and talented
and on the threshold of great success. He died at the age of 34 when his
motorcycle collided with a truck. It was on a ng that I first learned of his
passing. I was shocked and saddened and felt it in my stomach. I thought at
the time it was untrue, some cruel joke, but sadly it wasn't.
That is why I am furious with this thread (as it originally was). This so
called practical joker caused those feelings I described above to resurface.
This was just unfunny and cruel. period. The only thing that I am glad about

I'm sorry, but how can you say something this cruel *2 days* after a good
friend of Jette's died? It seems to me that you haven't yet had the
experience of the death of a close family member or friend in your life.
IE, I'm hoping that you are not so callous that you can just shrug off
something like someone's death by saying "people die every day".
I realize that we are separated by thousands of miles of fiberoptics, but
the people on this newsgroup and elsewhere on the Internet are still people
with feelings. If you were sitting around the lunch table with people at
work, conversing face to face with them, would you say something like this?
Probably not. You would be eating lunch alone if you did.
One of the reasons I identify with this series and DM is how it deals with
death. Yes, DM often says things like, "People die" but it is his way of
dealing with his own pain. He has never and would never say something like
that to a friend trying to cope with a recent loss.

No, I don't believe that we are drawing on a fictional character to define our
morality. We respond to this fictional character because we were moral people
to begin with. It takes many, many years for a person to define their personal
moral stature - and it starts in very early childhood and continues to grow and
evolve as one goes through life.
I used Duncan as an example because, after all, this is ATH and the characters
of the show is the uniting force that keeps the newsgroup going. If we all
didn't like Highlander so much, we wouldn't be here, reading the enormous
amount of posts(!), responding to those that move/tickle/whatever us to do so.
Duncan's character is a commonality which we all understand and can use to
*define our terms* so to speak.
I'm probably not making any sense. Oh well . . .
Maybe Jerri's right - Duncan also has quite a capacity for revenge.
But I can assure you, that after Highlander is over, we (most of us anyway)
will all continue to be moral people drawing on Real Life experience to grow
and progress, just like we did before Highlander.

Or say like all those mythical "PTB" (including AP, etc.) who are rumored to
read the ng from time to time but who probably don't talk to PW daily now
that HL is over, and who therefore may have gotten the shock of their lives,
learning that their *friend* had supposedly died?

I'm so happy I'm going, I was in kind of a blue mood lately. It's so nice
to have something 'so fun' to look forward to. Does anyone know what the
weather will be like? Coming from New Hampshire where it is bone chilling
cold this week, it is difficult to imagine warmer weather. Well the
question is, how warm? Getting to my summer duds will take some effort.

Hmmmm, it is my personal opinion that everyone who was alarmed by the
posting should have a whack at teaching HIM some manners. Apologies do not
have to be accepted, you know. And a lot of us have not accepted his. So,
if you're picking sides here...I think you landed on the wrong one.

He would be eating lunch with out teeth if he said it to me. I have a short
fuse. I am constantly amazed at how brave people are with all the those
miles between them. I can only assume that he is one of those geeks who
never developed any social skills and was picked on while growing up and the
humiliation of having all the other kids beating him up, the shame of not
having any friends and sexual frustration turned him into the stunted
twisted reprehensible little troll he is.

If this indeed be the case, wouldn't this cause you to pity him more than scorn
him? I do not mean this as a flame, or even passing judgement upon your
feelings. Feelings are valid in whatever form they take and there are no wrong
feelings; it is in the ACTION we choose to take in expressing our feelings that
we are to be held accountable.
Therefore, the if feelings that drove this *troll* to do what he did may indeed
be something as awfull as described above, and I truly pity the guy. We'll
probably never know . . .
No more from me on any of this subject . . . moving on.

Well, Califonia weather is very unpredictable these days. One day, El Nino
comes knocking on the door, dumping a ton of rain. The next day, the sun comes
out. Today (Monday), was pretty mild. Tempetures in the upper 60's in
Northern California. Hope to see you at the con, if we get our tickets <grrr>

It was a false rumor regarding Peter Wingfield-- Not
Methos! Both are alive and well.

if this is a young adolescent boy, however, well, adolescents do
really incredibly stupid things all the time. i just hope he
understands
the ramifications of his actions, how many people he hurt. if he
learns from this it won't be a total loss. if he still thinks it's
funny,
i think the boy needs help. an adult so cold to the feelings of other
people is sad and frightening. hopefully, he'll grow up to be a
responsible, kind adult.

Much as I hate to admit I know this I think the character you're referring
to as having died in a car crash was Shula's previous fiance (am I right??)
Simon was the git who tried to throw the Grundy's of their farm beat up both
Shula and I think Elizabeth and would have truly deserved something much
worse than a car crash.

A long running radio drama that Peter Wingfield used to be in. He played a

Archers is a radio show running in the UK in which PW had a role as a much

Jette,
Your original post was gone off my server or I would have replied there. I only
hope you can ignore this monstrous little troll's comments as much as possible.
I'm just jumping in to say that those of us who have experienced real loss DO
understand your pain. (My dad, in 1971, was only 58. My big sister, in 1981,
was only 37, and so on... ) And yes, as an animal lover, the losses of my cat
and a couple of dogs over the years were as painful in their way as the loss of
my human family members. a simple "I'm sorry" is never adequate for a loss, but
I just want you to know that I do care and I'm sending a VR hug your way.

Sheila, Marcus apologised by private e-mail and seemed sincere, so I have
decided that he is just a little over-eager in his joke; maybe a little
young. I've *forgiven* him (but I don't forget).
JSP on the other hand, claims to have suffered losses himself. Seems to me
he learnt nothing from them, certainly not how to empathise with other
people.
