DeSantis Slams Maher Over Stolen Election Claims: "Don't Act Like This Is A Unique Thing"

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis slammed Bill Maher during an interview this
week for bringing up how some members of the Republican Party have claimed
that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, saying that many Democrats
did the same thing in 2016.

DeSantis made the remarks during an appearance on “Real Time” Friday evening
to discuss his record as governor and his Republican presidential campaign.

After discussing the recent GOP primary debate and former President Donald
Trump, Maher brought up how DeSantis helped campaign for some Republicans who
were so-called “election deniers.”

“This I do not forgive,” Maher said. “I mean, Kari Lake, who said Biden’s an
illegitimate president. Trump didn’t —”

DeSantis fired back by noting that Lake has repeatedly attacked him since he
announced his presidential campaign, despite praising him in the past,
including making claims that were false about how he managed the COVID-19
pandemic.

“Well now she’s attacking me, so maybe I did make a mistake there because
she’s out there trying to say that we mandated vax in Florida,” DeSantis
said. “We did the opposite. We protected people, even from private mandates,
so that may have been —”

Maher pressed DeSantis on why he campaigned for Republicans who denied that
Trump lost the election, to which DeSantis responded: “Because I wanted to
see Republicans win key races.”

“That’s not a deal breaker issue for you?” Maher asked. “That’s not
democracy?”

“Okay, well, let’s go back to 2016,” DeSantis responded. “Your friends in
Hollywood were cutting ads telling the Electoral College to vote against
Trump in the Electoral College because it was stolen. They said Russia stole
the election; for years they said that, so don’t act like this is like a
unique thing in modern history of the country.”
