You know that green military jacket he wears? If you look closely,
you'll see there's a dark spot on the sleeve were the rank insignia
was removed. The shape of that spot is clearly that of an Air Force
chevron (Staff Sergeant would be my guess).

I've never heard anyone mention Luke serving in the military. If
that's his jacket (as opposed to something he picked up in a military
surplus store) then he must have served at least one four or six year
enlistment.

Can anyone clear this up?

Didn't Miss Patty (not sure who it was) that he didn't even go to
college because it would have meant leaving Stars Hollow?
Given that, it's most unlikely that he served in the military.

It may have been his father's since he's never left SH for any significant
amount of time.

You could easily buy old/used military gear at the Army and Navy stores.
Clothing from soldiers who left the service are often sold at these stores and
they are very common in big cities. After 9/11, there were concerns that
terrorists might purchase an army uniform from these stores and sneak into
military's sensitive areas, so these uniforms are stripped off important
insignia before being sold.

I chalk it up to buying it at an army surplus store, possibly when he &
Rachel were in the young, thrifty days of their relationship and they
went with that quasi-surplus look of late-80's/early-90's outdoorsy
contingent of Gen-X'ers.
