Laura, IIRC your Thunderbird was configured with the free aioe server,
and when aioe shut down you lost access. The free Eternal September
server works with Thunderbird. I posted instructions on how to configure
Thunderbird for Eternal September some time ago, and you were able to
set it up successfully, but because you hadn't registered for the free
account first, you could only see Eternal September hierarchy groups.
It's free to register, so do that here before configuring Thunderbird:
http://www.eternal-september.org/RegisterNewsAccount.php?language=en
(The following instructions are for the current version of Thunderbird,
115.3.2.)
Once you've registered with Eternal September and have your user id and
password, start Thunderbird and select from the menu bar File -> New ->
Newsgroup Account. The Identity box will appear--set that up as you want
it displayed when posting to the group and click Next. The Incoming
Server Information box will appear--enter
news.eternal-september.org and
click Next. A box will appear congratulating you on configuring your
account.
Now you need to populate the newsgroup list and subscribe to this group.
Close Thunderbird, restart it, then select from the menu bar Tools ->
Account Settings. In the account pane on the left you should see your
new Eternal September account. Right under that is Server
Settings--highlight Server Settings and you'll see the settings for the
server on the right. The only change you should make to those settings
is to tick the box next to "Always request authentication when
connecting to this server."
Close Thunderbird and restart it. Once you've restarted, right click on
your new Eternal September account in the accounts list pane, then click
Subscribe. A box will appear asking for your new Eternal September user
name and password. Once you've entered those, select the New Groups
tab--the complete list should populate within a few minutes (click
Refresh if it doesn't), then search for this group
(alt.tv.general-hospital) and tick the box next to it to subscribe.
Let me know if you have problems and I'll be glad to help. Good luck!
