Also, Richard Dawson (on Match Game) could be a REAL jerk (I swear I read
his lips the other night after a contestant matched him in the Super Match
and he said to him "don't touch the clothes" or something like that, also I
SWEAR he said to Betty White once, "don't touch me")...but he wasn't the
host of Match Game, so he doesn't count.

Of course, you could change the category into "Game show hosts who gave
stupid people what they deserved" and then Gene and Bob Barker would be the
shoo-ins.
I still say Julie Claire on "Debt" was the meanest-sounding announcer I ever
heard (even though she wasn't the host). When she would say "Sorry ________,
we're not going to pay off your debt," it sounded like she was really trying
hard not to start laughing at the poor contestant.

Well Barry had a mean streak to him no doubt. But the meanest host in TV
history would have to be Bob Eubanks during his run on Card Sharks. I thought
Bob did this show well but he spoke to the contestants even worse than Barry
could have even spoken to ANYONE on JJJ

Actually, NBC was considering giving him a job in 1988 with a remake of

screaming JOKER!!! I'd think the poor guy would have a heart attack if someone
hit JOKER JOKER JOKER (Sadly jack did die of a heart attack in 1984)
>2- Bob Eubanks (Yucky!)
Bob was yucky on every show he did. But I have been noticing Bob has been less
sarcastic and a little more fun on NG lately. I remember a week or so ago
there was a question and a guy answered the question with a remark about his
wife's waistline or something. Bob immediately said NO NO that's not true in a
very sympathetic way. The Bob Eubanks we all know would be the first to keep
that rude remark going but he immediatly quashed it!
>3 - Alex Trebeck (Seems Arrogant)

Yes he has been turning Jeopardy! Into the ALEX TREBEK show. Many of us think
this way of Richard Dawson on FF. But Mr. Trebek has been directing way too
much attention to himself on J! as of late
Phil Melcher
About 20 years ago or so, Mark Goodson appeared on Donahue,
and he described Trebek as a "Cold fish." IIRC, a couple of
the CS staffers with whom I worked, who had previously
worked on DD, didn't have fond memories of him, either.
Obviously, I chatted with him briefly during the J! credits,
but I was so out of it that, five minutes later, I would
have been hard-pressed to offer an observation.

This is an easy call in the UK: Bradley Walsh and Bob Mills.
I dunno if that fella who called himself a "Comic Persecutor of
Ignorance" or somesuch is still on this newsgroup or not, but Bradley
Walsh would be an ideal role model if he were. His style, on whatever he
hosted (Wheel of Fortune during its darkest days and The Midas Touch)
was to react like he's thinking the worst possible thing of the
contestants based on whatever they've said up to that point. There is an
argument that, in this country, people watch game shows not to see the
contestants win but instead to see the contestants humiliated - Bradley
Walsh's hosting credentials must have been based on that dynamic alone.
Bob Mills, on "Win, Lose or Draw", could extract the urine for England.
However, there's a subtle difference; he was usually friendly and
encouraging to the civilian contestants, though he would show no mercy
whatsoever to their celebrity team-mates. Any particularly errant
pictures or guesses would be viciously teased. He also hosted with an
artificially cruel streak on "Games World", though the assumption there
was that any kids appearing on it were confident enough of their video
games skills that they could happily be taken down a peg or two.
There was another difference, though; Bob Mills was funny and Bradley
Walsh wasn't.
All IMHO, as usual - who else's HO would it be?

Two possibilities.
The rudest was Gilbert Harding. Acutely rude every week to the panel,
host (when not in that chair) and contestants on What's My Line. Of
course this was one of the reasons for people watching. Particularly
keen to correct any bad grammar. He himself called his behaviour
'quite indefensible'.
The one that looked least sympathetic to contestants - Michael Miles.
Always seemed happier when the old sock rather than the treasure chest
was given away on Take Your Pick (1955-68). He lightened up a bit for
Wheel of Fortune in 1969 though.

I've always thought of Trebek as cold, but IMHO he did redeem himself with
his hosting job on "Battlestars."
But I remember an interview that Gene Rayburn did on CNBC some years ago on
"Talkback Live," someone asked Rayburn what he thought of Trebek, and he did
a thumbs-down signal and called him an "anal-retentive game show host."

show his trademark nastiness on that show.

I agree with you on the '78 era... Richard let success get to his head.
Actually, I think he seemed to enjoy FF '94, much more so than he did in
the last couple years of the original run. Richard had been out of work
since The Running Man, and I think he considered himself lucky to have a
job. It's just that his quick wit had basically dimininished. He was
still funny enough though.

That's his act. Good natured ribbing at contestants, but I agree he can
step over the edge sometimes. He's hardly like this off camera, from what
I've heard, he's a decent guy.

I don't know if I would agree. I just think that people are hard on him
when he breaks out of his usual seriousness to do something outrageous. A
good example would be High Rollers. My grandmother saw a J! taping and
said that Alex was funny and very nice.

I wish I could remember the words precisely, but I definitely remember
being shocked by some of the "you stupid jerk" comments that he made to
some contestants on Family Feud toward the end of the run, particularly
when the contestant gave a response that Dawson thought was dumb. And
there was nothing funny about his comments (unlike Jimmy Kimmel on Win
Ben Stein's Money, who can be cutting but his remarks are usually
humorous). Dawson's were just crude.

(2) Richard Dawson did let success go to his head right when he shouldn't.
After the syndie FF cancelled in '85, he was blackballed by the industry until
Mark Goodson's death in '92. Richard just wasn't into FF '94; he was old,
tired, bored, and acted as though he'd rather be somewhere else.

The WoF's from '79 to his departure. Maybe it was because of things with him

When Alex did "High Rollers" 8 out of 10 times he'd be drunk. But on Jeopardy!
as of late, it's turned more into The Alex Trebek Show. It seems as though
during the contestant introductions in the first round, a contestant would
stately describe his/herself and Alex would either wander off in a daze or he
would top that story with something of his own.
Also, Randy Amasia (a very reliable source) knew people (during Randy's "Card
Sharks" assignment) who worked with Alex on "Double Dare (1976)" and said they
didn't have fond memories of him.
Mark Goodson and Gene Rayburn said Alex was a "Cold Fish" and "an
anal-retentive game show host"
1) Richard Dawson. [Why do you think he was chosen as the host in "The
Running Man" ?]
2)Jack Barry. [However, I bet he would have been happier if there were less
crazies who popped up on Joker's Wild...]
3)Pat Finn. [From what I've seen on StYD and JW90, this guy shows complete
lack of sympathy for the contestants when they lose or even win. He's been
reading too much off them cue cards!]

oh wait , but i can think of the phoniest hosts....
here we go....
5. Bob Eubanks
4. Pat Sajak
3. Larry Blyden

Is it a requirement to be phony to be a Game Show Host?
The most sincere and real in my opinion are...
Bill Cullen (totally real, not a fake bone in his body)
Gary Moore.....he's a definite sweety.....very sincere.....(we love you Gary)
George Gray ....very down to earth
Jim Perry,,,had his phony moments but i still like him.
and Richard Dawson only when he returned on FF

Micah
Not really. He had little to do on that show except introduce the acts
and sing the end theme song. He never made any mean comments about the
acts.
> BTW--is that show still intact? That would be a hoot to see again.
I think so, and GSN probably has the rights to it, but they have the
decency not to show it. :-) A couple of things I didn't like about the
show was that it was basically The Gong Show, without a gong, and many
times you'd wish there was one there! Also, the celebrity "judges" had
NOTHING to do with deciding the winner. The PRODUCERS decided the winner.

Well...he also provided us with funny moments...touring with Sid Caesar for a
few years could be a factor.

RD
Huh? He didn't throw confettii around? LOL
Even veteran host Art James (who hosted the J!-esque "3 Ws") commented
to us at GSC8 on how he got annoyed by Trebek's "over-pronunciation of
foreign phrases...it's like 'Oh, I'm so educated!'".
Chuck Donegan (The Illustrious "Chuckie Baby")
He's the host of Extreme Gong.
A good point to interject a Jack Barry rememberance. Of course, he
often looked pissed off and wished he were somewhere else, but he often
did say or do nice things on the air. He frequently consoled people who
lost after very short games about how they had been excited for weeks
about coming on and it must hurt to lose so fast.
Another time, when they were calling members of the audience down to
face the devil, a name was read and two people came down. It wasn't the
fact that both people had the same name, but one gentleman simply
misheard the name called. When this dowdy looking man arrived at the
podium and was told it wasn't he who was called, he began walking away
and apologized for the confusion. Jack called him back, calling him
"Sir" and gave him $100, saying that must be disappointing to think it's
you and learn it's not.

>1. And I had to nominate Larry Blyden again too..... from that weird intro
>when he walks on the stage on What's My Line (are you going forward or
>sideways) to his patronizing of the guests..
You are entitled to your opinion, but Gil Fates(Producer of WML) wrote in his
book "What's My Line" that Larry was very sincere and the second best host he
ever worked with.(and he worked with many). Larry also had no ego, he never
tried to be the "star" just the host.
I do not think Larry patronized his guests. He always seemed interested in every
constestant that was on there. Gil makes reference to this too.
Larry had a difficult personal life raising his children after his ex wife
died. I am sure this might of caused him some personal anguish, but it never
showed threw.
As for his walk, he was a professional dancer on Broadway and that might be
the reason for that.
If you read the chapter devoted to Larry by Gil in his book, you will see Larry
as no phony, but a geninely sincere person.
Who was the best host Gil had worked with?
~Kay :o)
Garry Moore of I've Got a Secret and To Tell the Truth, who Fates refers to
twice as the best in the business. I don't know if that's wholly true, as we
only have two shows from which we may judge. (I have several favorites myself
-- Cullen, Kennedy, Eubanks, Rayburn, and Moore are among my top five.) But
Secret and Truth, despite their surface similarities, are very different shows
-- Secret was played for laughs, but required great language skills from the
moderator (a la WML?), while Truth was more serious but less needful of a
well-versed moderator, as the truth-teller and imposters were basically out
there on their own.
It might be a debatable point, but to me the highwater mark of each series was
easily when Moore ran them. Definitely in the case of Secret, which had been
among the top 20 rated shows seven times in 12 years under Moore to off the air
within three years under Steve Allen.
One thing I've always wondered about. Moore left Secret (and his own variety
show, both on CBS) in 1964 to take a year-long cruise around the world. (He
later returned with a new variety show in 1966, but up against Bonanza, it died
quickly.) Fates makes mention of a before-airtime meeting with George Gobel in
which Gobel offers him a drink (and Moore declines, saying he never drank right
before going on the air), and later, when Moore left TTTT after throat surgery
(I feel for him now -- I just had some of my own), some columnists surmised he
had a drinking problem. (Fates said Moore was a devout member of Alcoholics
Anonymous.) I wonder if that two-year gap was used to lick a persistent
drinking problem? If so, good for him.
