Frank Spangenberg, New York City police officer and the
highest-earning five-day winner;
Eddie Timanus, USA Today sports writer, Arlington, VA;
Robin Carroll, instructional designer and highest cumulative money
winner ever, Marietta, Ga.;
India Cooper, actor, New York;
Chuck Forrest, attorney, Grand Rapids, Mi.; Leslie Frates, Spanish
teacher, Hayward, Cal.; Bob Harris, writer and former Greed and Smush
champion, Los Angeles; Eric Newhouse, technical assistance director
and former Teen Tournament champion, Vermillion, SD; Claudia Perry,
sports copy editor, Jersey City, NJ; Rachel Schwartz, attorney,
Washington, D.C.; Leslie Shannon, research lab manager, Dallas, TX;
Brad Rutter, network administrator and current Tournament of Champions
winner, Lancaster, Pa.; Babu Srinivasan, professor, Houston; Bob
Verini, film journalist, Los Angeles; Kathleen Waits, law professor,
Tulsa.
All great players to be sure, but I would have liked to have seen
Leszek go up against Chuck Forrest, and wouldn't have minded playing
Chuck myself. But, we may never get to see that. Jeopardy folks:
nice idea with the diversity, but let's have a REAL Masters
tournament.

I know this was in the press release, not Dupee's description, but can one
of you please tell me why Carroll is listed as the "highest cumulative money
winner ever"? I don't get that at all.

I suspect they meant the highest woman.
List of the invitees to the tournament. Well, using J!'s own listing from
the website, let's see how each of these ranks on the 5-day money chart
(season in ()):
1 Frank Spangenberg (6)
14 Babu Srinivasan (17)
18 Chuck Forrest (2)
23 Eddie Timanus (16)
27 India Cooper (8)
39 Robin Carroll (16)
72 Bob Harris (14)
83 Leslie Frates (7)
89 Brad Rutter (17)
Won less than 50K, so >125
Eric Newhouse (teen)
Claudia Perry
Rachel Schwartz
Leslie Shannon
Bob Verini
Kathleen Waits
Only Cooper and Spangenberg are on the top one-day winners list (which is
only the top 15)
For Tournament of Champions winners, we have:
Chuck Forrest (3)
Bob Verini (4)
Rachel Schwartz (11)
Robin Carroll (16)
Brad Rutter (17)
So, offhand, I'd say that 7 people were definitely qualified as Masters; the
five ToC winners and Spangenberg and Srinivasen from the 5-day list. Timanus
and Cooper are at least in a reasonable ballpark, although Cooper had a
whopping 8 people from the same season who had higher five day totals than
her. The other six seem to have been chosen either at random or for other
reasons.

Ya know, I can't argue about the inclusion of Eric Newhouse. For him and him
alone I might go out of my way to watch this thing. He was easily the most
entertaining Teen Champion of all time. In an era where the other Teen
players were total preppies wearing nice dress clothing and getting ready to
go to Hahvahd, he came out in a nice comfortable baggy sweater and proceeded
to kick major ass. I think those two weeks were the only two weeks I could
talk Jeopardy with my classmates and have them actually follow what I was
talking about.
So it's "highest cumulative money winner ever (except for the parts we
decide not to count)". Thanks.

Super Jeopardy!? Why, what's that? I don't remember Robin Carroll
appearing on such a tournament. She certainly didn't win such a
tournament. You must be thinking of some other, non-Carroll show.

I suppose their logic is that Super J! wasn't part of the regular
series, and therefore doesn't count. Not saying I BUY that logic, mind
you...
And he won his Super J! quarter final game, no less :)
I might also have included Amanda Goad in the list to get another woman
involved, as that is what J! seems to want to do with this tournament. Forget
Leszek and Bob Blake and Tom Nosek, bring on people like Babu and India Cooper
and Claudia Perry(another favorite of mine through the years)
On a somewhat unrelated note:
Several years ago I met someone who had been in the ToC with Newhouse
(let's call this person X, in the interest of privacy). We talked a
little about the other contestants, and Newhouse's name came up. The
conversation went as follows:
X: Oh, him. We [the contestant pool] all thought that we'd read about
him in the newspaper some day.
Me: What, you thought he was going to be famous?
X: No, we thought he was going to be in a clock tower with a rifle.

Nor was it. All the more reason I was amused by Eric bucking the trend.
> X: No, we thought he was going to be in a clock tower with a rifle.
But don't you see? (Maybe you don't, you're at Cornell after all ;)) That
was his _appeal_, he was the Everyman of the Teen Tourney...all of the other
kids, you could sense, had their tight little lives (or lack thereof), where
they spent their lunch hours studying for Academic Decathalon, and sweated
the mailman showing up every day 'cuz there could be a letter in there from
Notre Dame, and never once did they attend one of their school's football or
basketball games, and then there was Eric, who was just as bright, and just
as quick, but, again, you could sense he didn't go in for that stuff, he had
better things to do with his time, he was a _regular kid_.
It doesn't surprise me the contestant pool looked down their nose at him.
They obviously didn't take him seriously, since they were all eventually
looking up from the floor after he whipped their asses. :)
The J website has a link to get tickets. Get as many as you can, and
if you pay my expenses I will gladly go there and man a picket line.
I still think you were omitted for being too good, some might even say
that you are a "professional" contestant, and that might have curdled
J's milk.

Thanks for the kind words, but there are at least 4, and possibly 5,
former J! contestants who I would rank on the "Masters" roster before
me:
Bruce Seymour
Bob Blake
Frank Spangenberg
Dan Melia
Jerome Vered (maybe; on the "yea" side, he is #2 all-time 5-day
winner, #1 one-day winner, and holds two of 15 top one-day totals,
more than anyone else;on the "nay" side, I did beat him in our TOC
final).

I would put Chuck Forrest and Tom Cubbage and probably Eddie Timanus on the
masters list as well as Leszek and the others.
Umm, no, I'm not.
I never said in my message that she was on Super Jeopardy. I said that
the Super Jeopardy champ (who was not Robin Carroll) won $250,000,
which is more than Robin's total winnings.
If you pick them on the basis of winning the TOC, 5 qualify.
But if you're choosing a 15-player "Masters" field with a combination
of both, then you start knocking some of the lower-scoring TOC winners
(like Rachael Schwartz, Bob Verini and maybe Brad Rutter) in order to
bring in the high-scoring 5-day winners like Jerome Vered and Doug
Lach.
And there were only 6 contestants in season 8 with higher 5-day totals
than India, not 8. She also holds the distinction of being the only
Jeopardy champ ever to appear in a Steven Seagal movie (1988's "Above
The Law").

I had a similar chat about this with some ATGSers on AIM when the roster of
players was first released, except I chose just the 3 finalists. My dream
finals would consist of Eddie Timanus, Bob Verini and Chuck Forrest. If we
weren't going with strictly Masters Tournament players, swap out Verini with
Leszek.
I think the dark horse in this tournament is Forrest, since he hasn't been
on any version of Jeopardy! in almost 12 years and his original appearances
were in the 1985-86 season. You youngins don't know how spectacular Forrest
was back in the day, unless his eps. are floating around the trading circuit
and I don't know about it.

He was pretty damn good, and I could still see him doing some damage in the
tournament(unless of course, the questions are more pop culture oriented for
the tournament and Chuck has a weak spot there)
There was something special about watching Chuck play. I hope he's still
at that level and he doesn't have a weak spot like that.
Bruce, since both Leszek & Jerome were both on Win Ben Stein's money
and both defeated Ben and won $5K, were you ever on the show before?
Also, were there any other shows that all three of you appeared on?
(ie Greed, WWTBAM, Primetime TWL, etc...)
