I would say that the average episode of PM is not as good as the average
episode of 74 or 75 that I've seen over the past 8 months. Sometimes
there are gems, often they are pretty humdrum.

Problems:

Editing. Fitting in those three questions means a lot of the yukking
around by the celebrities gets cut. Let's face it, watching contestants
say "boobs" or "wife" as fast as possible is not what makes Match Game fun
to watch. I should point out that PM seemed to drag when it was only two
questions, so in a sense they just can't win.

No returning champions. Come on, were there any Match Game 74 viewers who
WEREN'T rooting for Janet Finn to beat her ditzy opponents and win $5000
every time around? Seeing two bland new faces every night gets boring,
with occasional notes of interest when they're NFL head coaches now or
something like that.

No running jokes. Often you'll see the cast of 7x build up a joke through
the course of the taping day/viewing week, but there's no continuity
between episodes of PM.

Something else I noticed about MGPM (especially with the bule set even though I
don't think that matters) is that the 4th seat, about 3 out 5 times, was the
"dumb blonde seat". Remember 2 weeks ago Friday the Einsine that had a
shoplifter stuffing her bra with TWINKIES? Does anybody agree with me?

5 problems with that era

1) the awful set
2) No returning champions.
3) No RICHARD DAWSON
4) - awful "celebrity's" ( ie...foster brooks, bill daly, Bowser ?!?!?)
5) - no gary burghoff, nipsy

MG75 is pretty much considered to be the beginning of MG's prime. As for PM,
I think that the episodes without Richard are actually better in some
ways--the celebrity in Seat 5 actually wants to be there (well, except for
Scoey Mitchlll on yesterday's ep). Now that PM is past when 7x went off the
air and the syndie eps. started, there are more different celebrities
because they didn't have to get permission to have other networks' stars on
a CBS show. PM, though, generally is hit and miss without RD--some panels
are funny and some are not very good at all--be glad you didn't see the
episodes with Audrey Landers. Also be glad you didn't see the MG74 eps. with
Robert Morse or Louisa Moritz.

The set changed for Both Match Game and Match Game PM in Fall 1978. They're
currently around 1979 or 1980 in the run of MG PM(MG PM ran from 1975-81 as a
weekly nighttime syndicated show, while Match Game 7x ran on CBS from 1973-79,
and a daily syndicated edition of that ran from 1979-82 after CBS dropped the
show)

They were on the show from time to time. Correct me if I am wrong, but I
think Gary Burghoff left MASH by '78 and pretty much disappeared after
that.

Bill Daily played Howard Borden on "The Bob Newhart Show", but MG was (IMO)

Actually, FF became the #1 show in its first season (1976-77). MG's ratings
went donwhill because of the time changes during that same season.

But hey, the PM version did have another plus: the $20K top prize offered
during the Star Wheel era!

Oh, yeah, I forgot to address this one.

My memory for 1978 isn't what it would be for most people, seeing as how I

Yes, that was the style back then. There are references to it in the movie
"Boogie Nights" when Don Cheadle (who played Buck Swope in the movie) had a
quarrel about it with his boss at the stereo store and at a pool party with his
co-star "Becky Barnett." Even though they didn't like it, the "cowboy" look
was definitely in. Maybe that's how Buck Swope got his name (intersting role
for a black guy).

You had (in 1978):
The MG '78/PM blue set

Dukes of Hazzard

Little House on the Prarie

Sheriff Lobo/BJ and the Bear

Dallas (or any TV show/movie related to Texas)

any movie starring Burt Reynolds or Clint Eastwood

"I cried in my beer" and "cheatin" songs in country music as well as the
artists went mainstream. Tanya Tucker's song "Texas (when I die)" was a huge
hit.

cowboy boots were usually worn to the office (especially in Texas and Oklahoma)

and The Dallas Cowboys were NFL Super Bowl Champions and became a mainstream
hit worldwide. Huge bitter rivalries with them and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chuckie Baby -

You rarely get it wrong, but I would have to say that Bill Daily is much
more known for his role as Howard Borden on The Bob newhart Show and even
more remembered for playing Roger Healy on I Dream of Jeanie than for his

Wow, posts like this show just how insulated our game show community can
be sometimes!

Bill Daily had major supporting roles in two enormously popular
situation comedies of the sixties and seventies. I loved seeing him on
Match Game too, but trust me here, he's going to be far better
remembered for "I Dream of Jeanie" and "The Bob Newhart Show" than for
his semi-regular appearances on a syndicated game show.

Not a good as Charles and Brett, but still very good. The problem is that they

Richard Dawson left Match game in '78. Match Game was on the air until '82.
Four years is'nt soon in any definition of the word, espeically when it comes
to game shows.

Match Game was canceled because CBS moved it around too much. And after that it
still lasted 2 years in syndication.

I agree, I think MG went downhill after Richard Dawson left. I also liked
Brett Summers (not sure if that is her last name), and Charles Nelson Reily. I
don't think the show would be nearly as funny without Richard, Charles, and
Brett.

MG was not as good once Dawson (and his ego) left, the addition of the star
wheel and
the sprucing up of the set helped. But I don't think it sucked.

If would likely would have been cancelled sooner if not for Charles and
Brett.
What I did not like was in 1979, when the stars were broken in three, making
it considerably harder to double the $$.

GSN is about through the second running of MG PM since they re-acquired
the rights to the G/T library. I would prefer to see something else from
the
MG collection at 9pm ET. The 1976-1982 CBS/syndicated shows have not aired
since
April 1998 (with one or two "year end" exceptions), and the 1990 ABC version
is also laying around (it was shown once a week Sundays before the "dark
