Last week (and today) Raymond Burr made his only appearance on MG 78. I
think he was a one shot deal for a very good reason. He wasn't funny,
and he said very little (even Gene joked about his lack of speaking on
the show). Despite this, Raymond did appear to enjoy himself somewhat,
he was just apprehensive about saying very much. Raymond also played the
game quite well too.

Any other celebs that made ONLY one appearance?

Here are a few that come to mind..

Don Adams- appeared on MG 74. Surprisingly, he wasn't very funny, and he
seemed to dislike being imitated by Richard Dawson and (with lesser
effect) Gene Rayburn.

Kukla and Ollie- They appeared just as MG was nearing the end of the
run. They were fun to see on the show, based on the PM ep. that some of
us have seen.

Jack Narz- I think he only made one appearance on MG 74. Since Now You
See It was one of his last shows he did, he had no reason to do MG
again.

Tom Kennedy- Appeared on the syndicated run. Tom just didn't fit in with
the game, and MG was towards the end of the run by this time.

Joe Flynn- MG 74 may have been his last appearance on TV, because Joe
Flynn died drowning later that year. It's a shame too... Joe was a VERY
funny guy. He came up with the infamous "Nanookie" answer. (BTW, if
anyone has the entire week with Joe Flynn on the panel, email me!)

Cass Elliott- MG 73 may have been one of Cass' last TV appearances, as
she died later that year. BTW, she RESENTED being called Mama Cass.

Tom Poston- Appeared on MG 77. His very dry wit clashed with the raucous
humor, and he wasn't that great of a player either.

Michael Landon- Michael was actually a decent player, and he was amusing
enough, but Michael never made a career out of game show appearances. He
really didn't need to, having great success on Bonanza, Little House on
the Prairie, and other shows. The only other game show I can think of
that Michael appeared on was You Don't Say.

Michael Learned and Richard Thomas- Second week of MG 73...THE WALTONS
on MG?! Does anyone see anything wrong with that picture?!

Nancy Kulp on this week's MG76 is about as engaging as Janet Reno, some might
think.

I agree. Burr seemed OK, but subdued.

I remember that week. I've never cared all that much for Adams in general, save
for "Get Smart."

That's all I've seen. It was very odd to say the least. And who'd have thought
they're names would be part of what is probably the dumbest Super Match answer
in MG history.

I liked Narz on the show. It's still somewhat surprising he didn't appear more
than once, as several other game show hosts popped in more than once (Barker,
Ludden, Convy, etc.)

And GSN skipped this week initially before it cropped up on the weekend run. I
wonder close the airdate was to her death?

Strange, I'd have thought he would've done better on the show. Humor wise
anyway. Bad game play doesn't help, but then again Scoey Mitchlll kept coming
back.

Richard Thomas has the distinction of probably being the only male to sit in
the sixth seat, for whatever the hell that's worth.

Btw, was Joan Collins on more than once? She looked and acted totally out of
place on the show, even when you consider it was long before Dynasty.

Also, there was Robert Morse, who antics caused two questions to be thrown out
in the space of two shows.

I did like Raymond Burr but you were right. He didn't talk much
but he did seem to enjoy himself.

The only 2 people that I wished had only made 1 appearance
probably would be Kaye Stevens because she was annoying,
and probably Dick Martin because he wasn't funny at all.

Actually, Landon did Hollywood Squares quite often in the late 60s and early
70s. Our impressions of who did game shows often back then is a little bit
skewered by the fact that we only have the G-T shows of that era to judge and
at the same time there were other celebs who only appeared on Heatter-Quigley
shows with great frequency like Robert Fuller of Emergency for instance.

Also add Richard Long of "The Big Valley" who appeared on MG 74 just three
months before his death. There was an eerie moment when he was introduced for
the first time and Gene just said off-handedly, "You have any problems?" and he
replied, somewhat puzzled by the question, "No, I'm not expecting any."

Jaye P. Morgan only appeared on the third week of MG 73, which was also the
first week for Brett and CNR.

Joe Garagiola in January 1978, after he had taken over as host of TTTT. Since
he was NY based his entire broadcasting career, trips to CA were not practical
for him to do MG again.

I didn't know that was his only appearance. I didn't pick up on him being
miffed in any way, but I DO think he looked somewhat sick, exhausted, or
otherwise generally worn out on his appearance, which might have
contributed to the lackluster results.

Did Robert Morse appear more than once? He's part of an elite
club...celebrities that by all rights should have been kicked off the
panel and replaced by Mark Goodson mid-week.

Larry Blyden. As we know, he couldn't make a career out of MG appearances
(or anything else for that matter) after that 1975 trip to Morocco.

Cass Elliot-also cause she met some horrific fate.

I'm sure there are more...

I don't believe he did, and I wouldn't invite someone back that blew two
questions in a row either!

Another one timer that comes to mind is Jack Albertson.(of Chico and the
Man. In 77, the actor that played Chico, Freddie Prinze, committed
suicide, and they decided to finish the season without him, and the
following year they tried a much younger "Chico", but it didn't work) He
too blew a question by revealing his answer too early.

In going over old TVGuides, I've seen Michael's name appear quite
frequently on game shows up until the early '70s. He was also on the
original "Hollywood Squares" several times - to name one other show.

Freddie Prinze did do the Cullen $25K Pyramid, but reports in here say he
wasn't the best player. It's a true shame what happened to him, however.

I think they've shown that one on GSN recenly. Yes, Jack blew it, but it
was an honest mistake. To put it bluntly, Robert Morse was a complete
fuckup.

I don't think that was the case. If you recall, Joe was also a sports
broadcaster on NBC Baseball telecasts. And since he did that work
primarily on the weekends, he was all over the country and not
necessarily in the L.A. or N.Y. area.

Since NBC had a ownership stake in Bonanza during it's run, he may not
have had much of a choice for appearing on some NBC game show
juggernauts. Notice after Bonanza was cancelled, Michael didn't really
show up on any other game shows. He may have been on Match Game around
the time that Bonanza was being offered up for rerun syndication.

I can only assume he was some sort of LA based stand-up comedian/actor who
cropped up on a few TV shows here and there ("Rhoda," "Police Story," "Taxi,"
etc.) and somehow hooked up with MG.

And he really was sometimes credited as Scoey Mitchlll (yes, that's 3 L's)

Oh, please don't make me remind you what happens when you assume!
Scoey Mitchlll was not just some sort of L.A. based comedian/actor.
He was a frequent guest on the talk shows and other game shows. In
1970, he won the male lead in ABC's new series "Barefoot In The Park",
based on the movie of the same name but with a black cast. By the
time Match Game came along in 1973, Scoey was very well known and well
established so it isn't at all surprising that he was asked to appear.
And all you have to do is what Scoey's interaction with Brett to
understand why they kept inviting him back. She loved him dearly in
spite of his constant barbs, resulting in some very funny moments.
And Scoey has/had one of those laughs that assures anyone within
earshot will soon be laughing with him.

>And he really was sometimes credited as Scoey Mitchlll (yes, that's 3 L's)

He wasn't sometimes credited as Scoey Mitchlll. That is/ was his real
name and is/was really spelled will 3 L's and no E. Interestingly
enough, Bert Convy made mention of it on "Tattletales" a few weeks ago
when Scoey and Claire appeared on the show.

You're right about Garagiola's NBC baseball work taking up most of his time by
then during the season, but when he was co-hosting the Today Show, hosting
"Sale Of The Century" and doing NBC Radio's Monitor series, he was based in NY.

I was amazed that they'd put both the Joyces (Elaine and Boulifant) on
the same panel. The ditzy blonde factor was off the scale. Yet they did
it again in the first couple months of the syndie run, according to

Thanks for the info on Scoey. I was aware of his "Barefoot in the Park" series,
but since it was very short lived (13 eps) and 3 years before MG I didn't think
much of it. (FWIW, another MG regular, Nipsey Russell, was on that show too.)

OTOH, during the run of MG, he did have a recurring character on "Rhoda." I
believe he also appeared on "The Carol Burnett Show" a few times. (He did have
some CBS show connections obviously, which made his MG appearances even more
logical.)

As far as his interaction with Brett, it seemed mostly one way to me. I guess I
was missing something.

Also, a lot of that has to do with the star value of a given star
in what show they're on at the time. You rarely saw, say, Mary Tyler
Moore, Carroll O'Connor, Alan Alda, Jaclyn Smith, Larry Hagman, or
Peter Falk on a game show - or even on talk shows, unless they were by
themselves. You *would* see Joyce Bulifant, Sally Struthers, David
Doyle, Charlene Tilton, Loretta Swit, and Karen Grassle on games - the
supporting cast - which Michael was on Bonanza, as opposed to his top-
star billing on Little House on the Prairie.

Scoey Mitchlll also starred in the sitcom "Barefoot in the Park", which
premiered on ABC around the same time as another TV adaptation of a Neil
Simon play which is probably more familiar to game show buffs: "The Odd
Couple".
If memory serves, the show was short-lived, due in some part to
Mitchlll's inability to get along with the producers.

Conny Van Dyke, by the way (no relation to Dick, Jerry, Barry, et al.)
was a country singer and sometime actress who appeared in the Burt
Reynolds movie "W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings", in addition to her game
show career (somewhat odd that her chief exposure nowadays is reruns of
shows which no one probably thought would ever be rerun).

She was an actress on The Young and the Restless at the time of her

Welcome Back Kotter...though I never would've known had she not been
introduced as such by Johnny O during her week in early '78. :-)

She was also seen on Days of Our Lives in recent years as Laura

And also played similar friend/neighbor role in Channing's earlier

Um....no. Co-star of "Gunsmoke". Tragically died because her husband (whom
she'd appeared with on Tattletales) infected her with AIDS.

You are half-right on this one. Yes, AIDS did take the life of Amanda
Blake but she did not contract it from Frank Gilbert, her husband at
the time of their "Tattletales" appearance. Amanda and Frank divorced
sometime in the late 70s-early 80s. In 1984, Amanda married Mark
Spaeth but divorced him also prior to her death. There have been
conflicting stories as to how Amanda contracted AIDS. The one that
has been circulated a lot is that she contracted it mysteriously and
accidentally during one of her many trips to Africa, where she visited
frequently to be near the jungle animals. However, it is now believed
in most circles that Mark Spaeth, her last husband, was bisexual and
already HIV+ at the time that they married and in very short order,
Amanda had been infected as well.

When "The Waltons" was on MG, the show was still using harmless pedestrian questions like the ones on the original MG of the 60s. The show didn't get more risque until around the end of 73 or the beginning of 74.

Actually it was the opposite, he didn't shit his pants, but refused to come back because just about everyone else on the show did.
