<applause as camera moves towards center stage>
Announcer: And now, here's your host: Dean Scungio!
<applause as Dean walks to center stage, inside the semicircle>
Dean: Thank you, and welcome to 'Net 10-to-1! I'm Dean Scungio. I hope you
all had a wonderful holiday season. Well, this is it. We've waited a long
time, and it's finally here. No, I'm not talking about the arrival of the
21st Century. <light laughter> But we will be kicking off the new
millennium with our first ever Grand Final game. As you can see, we've
dressed up the set for this special occasion.
<wide shot of studio>
In the past five games, we've found ten excellent players who left their
marks on the Finals Board. Of course, they were the *only* ten players, but
that's another story. <light laughter> Let's take a quick look at that
Finals Board.
FINALS BOARD
Name Score Winnings
=========================================
1. Alan MacNeill 193 $ 25,000
2. Chico Alexander 172 $ 11,000
3. Justin Lollie 132 $ 12,000
4. Mitch Groff 92 $ 10,000
5. Tom Beals 81 $ 7,500
6. Mark Jeffries 71 $ 10,000
7. Bob Pollett 62 $ 12,000
Rei Nakazawa 62 $ 7,000
9. Jerry Depew 41 $ 2,500
10. David Hammond 12 $ 2,500
Alan MacNeill finished with the high score of 193 points and earned a bonus
$5,000. But that's chump change compared to what is at stake here in the
Grand Final. Our ten players are here to compete for a Grand Prize of
$100,000!
<wild applause>
Yes! We've got a lot of money to give away, so let's get right into it.
Here are the rules: During the game, each player is scored with strikes. If
someone gets three strikes at any time, that person is eliminated from the
game. For the first round, I will ask each player two questions from
different subjects. If a contestant gets one question wrong, he receives
one strike. However, if he gets both questions wrong, he earns two more
strikes totaling three strikes, and he is immediately out of the game.
<turns to players>
As a note to our players, if you happen to be eliminated in this first
round, you'll get $1,000. So all of you are guaranteed a prize no matter
what happens in this game.
<Dean remains standing at center stage facing the players during the entire
round>
Dean: I must also note that the positions for our players were determined
randomly before the show. Their "rankings" on the Finals Board had no
impact on their podium positions. Player number 1 is Justin Lollie. He is
a college student from Santa Rosa, California, and host of "'Net All-Star
Blitz". He is the Game 3 champion, but was eliminated in the second rounds
of both Games 1 and 2. Well, Justin, you've come a long way, and this is
the big one. How do you think you'll do?
Justin: I came up close on several occasions. This game has a lot of luck
involved, and hopefully my luck will hold out long enough for me to win.
Dean: Yes, luck plays a bigger part in this game than most people think.
There's $100,000 at stake, Justin. Excited?
Justin: Extremely. It'll go a long way towards paying back my college
loans.
Dean: Good to hear that. Anyone out there you want to say "Hi" to?
Justin: I'll say hi to my family at home and all of my friends online.
Dean: They're all rooting you on. Ok, down to business. You know how it
works. Two questions. You get one wrong, you get one strike. Get both
wrong and you're out. Here's your first question:
* 1. Mythology: What is the Roman name for the Greek god Zeus?
Justin: I think it's Jupiter.
<ding>
Dean: That's correct. One down, here's the other:
* 2. U.S. Currency: Who is pictured on the U.S. half-dollar coin?
Justin: John F. Kennedy.
<ding>
Dean: Correct again. You're in good shape with no strikes, Justin.
--- 1. Justin Lollie
Those dashes you see on the scoreboard will replaced by X's when a player
gets a strike. And as you know, three strikes and you're out.
Next up is Tom Beals. <looks up, notices Tom's podium is empty, except for
a note> Hey, where's Tom? <walks over and reads the note> Oh, wow. Tom
Beals can't be with us today. He snuck out and went to lunch early. <light
laughter> No, seriously, he left a note saying that he had resigned from
the game earlier. However, I must fulfill the rules. This will count as a
missed deadline. He gets three strikes...
XXX 2. Tom Beals
...but we'll mail him a virtual check for $1,000 just for being on the
Finals Board. I'm sorry he couldn't be here. That extra $1,000 brings his
total winnings for the series to $8,500. He was a great player. Thanks,
Tom.
<applause>
<Dean walks back to center stage>
Dean: Now that's out of the way, here is number 3, Mark Jeffries, a legal
secretary from Chicago. He came in third place twice, and second place once
in Game 5. Mark, you've seen your competition. How do you think you'll do?
Mark: Well, it all comes down to the luck of the draw. If I can make it to
the last round I'll be happy.
Dean: It's that luck thing again. And yes, the third round has all that big
money. $100,000. How do you feel about that?
Mark: Now Dean, what do you think?
<laughter>
Dean: Duh. Moving on...anyone you want to say "Hi" to?
Mark: I want to say hi to my buddies in the Minions--they know who they are.
Dean: And they shall remain nameless. Ready, Mark? Here's your first
question:
* 5. Music Groups: Johnny Rzeznik is the lead singer of what hit group?
Mark: That would be the Goo Goo Dolls.
<ding>
Dean: That would be correct. Next question:
* 6. Anatomy: Where in the human body would you find your tibia bone?
Mark: I believe it's somewhere in the leg.
Dean: Judges?
<ding>
<applause>
Yes, the lower leg to be more precise. No strikes for you, Mark.
--- 3. Mark Jeffries
Player 4 is David Hammond from West Virginia, host of "'Net Top Card", "'Net
Battlestars", and "Letter Wars". David is the tenth man on the Finals Board
with a score of 12 points. What happened was, we had exactly ten people
qualify for the Grand Final. David just squeaked in there at the end of
Game 5. How do you think you'll do in this game?
David: I really don't know. But, in the end, when we have went from 10 to
1, I hope I'm the 1.
Dean: Confidence! We like that. You're here to play. Excited for all that
money?
David: I very much am. I never dreamed that I would be in the Grand Final,
after bombing out in Round 3 of my last game, I thought I was finished.
Dean: Things worked out in a strange way, but you're here. Anyone out there
you want to say "hi" to?
David: No, not really.
Dean: Okay, I'll leave it at that. Now, here is your first question:
* 7. U.S. Cities: What is Chicago's "Loop"?
David: Chicago's "Loop" is a term for the city's historic downtown.
<ding>
Dean: We'll take it. It's also the business district. Next question:
* 8. Art: In ceramics, what name is given to the oven used to dry and harden
clay?
David: A oven used to harden clay is called a kiln.
<ding>
Dean: That is correct. You also have no strikes going into Round 2, David.
--- 4. David Hammond
Our next player, in position 5, is Bob Pollett, a high school student from
Waggoner, Illinois. He won Game 5, but he also struck out at the same time.
He's here, and that's all that matters. How do you think you'll do in this
Grand Final, Bob?
Bob: I plan on bombing this round, and going into a deep, deep depression.
<laughter>
Dean: Oh, c'mon, it won't be that bad...I doubt that you're excited, then?
Bob: No, not really excited because I can't beat these 9, they're so good.
Dean: Stranger things have happened, Bob, like in that last game you won.
Don't worry. So, anyone out there watching?
Bob: No, but could you hold my cab?
<laughter>
Dean: <yells to offstage> Somebody get on the phone and call the cab
company! Okay. Let's just get to it. Your first question, Bob:
* 9. Authors: Who wrote "Jurassic Park" and its sequel, "The Lost World"?
Bob: Michael Crichton.
<ding>
Dean: Correct. That's one. Next one:
* 10. Geometry: How many sides does a nonagon have?
Bob: 9 sides. On second thought, here's a $20. Can someone pay the driver
for me?
<laughter>
<ding>
Dean: <grabs dollar bill> I'll hold onto that. <pockets it> <light
laughter> Those questions were no problem, now were they? You'll be
sticking around, Bob. No strikes for you.
--- 5. Bob Pollett
Next is Chico Alexander, who won Game 2 and placed second on the Finals
Board. He's a student from UNC Chapel Hill. He hosts "'Net Card Sharks",
"FastTalkers", "'Net Idiot Savants", and his newest hit, "Chaingame". Very
successful games, all of them. But how do you think you'll do in this one?
Chico: I don't know, really. Gotta play to find out.
Dean: We'll just wait and see then. $100,000 at stake here. Excited?
Chico: Oh yeah.
Dean: That's a lot money. Anyone you want to say "Hi" to?
Chico: Yeah. Big ups to the Mikes, the Mollies, Mary, Crystal, and EdHo in
the UNC glee club. How ya like me now? :)
<laughter>
Dean: Well, they're rooting for you. Okay, you know how it works. Here's
your first question:
* 11. Mountains: What mountain range is a physical landmark that breaks
Russia into European and Asian parts?
Chico: Urals.
<ding>
Dean: Correct. One down. Here's the other question:
* 12. Comic Strips: What farming community was the childhood home for
Superman?
Chico: Smallville.
<ding>
Dean: That is also correct. Good job. You also have no strikes, Chico.
--- 6. Chico Alexander
Contestant number 7 is Jerry Depew, a high school student from Levittown,
Pennsylvania. Like David, he also snuck into the Grand Final. Well, Jerry,
you're here. Now how do you think you'll do?
Jerry: I hope I'll win, but I dunno...I will probably make it in the top 5.
Dean: The top five is not bad, but it's the top three that counts. The
winner gets $100,000. Are you excited?
Jerry: Of course I am!
Dean: While we're at it, is there anyone you want to say "Hi" to out there?
Jerry: Yep, I wanna say hi to everyone at Truman High, and my best friend
Danny Moran.
Dean: They're wishing you good luck. Let's get started. Question one:
* 13. U.S. Revolutionary War: What city was the site of the Battle of Bunker
Hill?
Jerry: Boston, Massachusetts.
<ding>
Dean: Correct. Actually, the battle took place on Breed's Hill. Here's the
next one:
* 14. Automobiles: What car company produces the Xterra?
Jerry: Nissan.
<ding>
Dean: Right. You got both of them right, so you have no strikes, Jerry.
--- 7. Jerry Depew
At number 8 is Alan MacNeill. He is the big winner from this season. He
won Games 1 and 4, and he scored the highest on the Finals Board with 193
points. That's $10,000 for each win, plus a bonus $5,000 for the high
score. $25,000 now, possibly $100,000 more in the near future. What are
your thoughts about this game, Alan?
Alan: Well, I expect my 193 puts a nice large bullseye on my back, but I
hope to survive.
Dean: I also think you're a target, but we'll have to wait and see what
happens. Good luck to you. Anyone you want to say "Hi" to?
Alan: I'd like to say hi to my close personal friends from the Student Loan
Company and the IRS...root for me, cuz there might be a big check for ya!!!
<laughter>
Dean: They're watching *very* closely, Alan. <light laughter> Alright,
let's get to it. Here's your first question:
* 15. English Language: A "synonym" is a word with a similar meaning to
another word. What term is given to a word that has the opposite meaning of
another word?
Alan: That would be an antonym.
<ding>
Dean: Correct. Now the other question:
* 16. World Capitals: What world capital features a "Forbidden City" within
itself?
Alan: That would be Beijing, China.
<ding>
Dean: That would be correct as well. Good job, no strikes for you.
--- 8. Alan MacNeill
As we get closer to the end, it's Mitch Groff up next at number 9. He is a
college student from Strasburg, Pennsylvania. Mitch finished in second
place twice in Games 1 and 3. But now he's here to play for $100,000. It's
exciting to play for all that money, huh?
Mitch: I am incredibly excited to play for enough fake money to pay for a
nice car. Hi mom!
<laughter>
Dean: Fake money, fake cars. All of that can be found here in the world of
Net Games. And your mom is watching, I'm sure. Here we go, Mitch. First
question:
* 17. Sports Equipment: What sport uses an item called a "cesta"?
Mitch: That would be, strangely enough, jai alai. The game that has the
fantastic 7 scoring system! Thanks, David Letterman!
<ding>
Dean: And thank you, Mitch, for giving a right answer. Next question:
* 18. Gems and Jewelry: What is the birthstone for the month of September?
Mitch: Sapphire - my birthday month!
<ding>
Dean: Oh, you were lucky to get that. You are correct, and you have no
strikes.
--- 9. Mitch Groff
Finally, on the far end at number 10 is Rei Nakazawa from Tacoma,
Washington. He is one of our better players, but he's only finished second
once, back in Game 2. Rei, this is the big one. How do you think you'll
do?
Rei: Well, I definitely have the toughest of tough competition this time.
Frankly, if I don't do well, I'll have a good excuse! But I'm gonna do my
best, and hope to at least give 'em a run for their money!
Dean: Yes, determination, that's another thing I like to see. Anyone
watching?
Rei: A few friends, like Jeff, Ray, and Perry. My sister and my folks. And
I beg 'em to wish me luck!
Dean: Well, I wish you good luck as well. As you know, two questions. Get
them both wrong, and you're out. Here's the first one:
* 19. Disney Films: Who provided the voice of Iago the parrot in "Aladdin"?
Rei: That would be Gilbert Gottfried.
<ding>
Dean: Correct. Now, the last question of this round:
* 20. Famous Quotations: What world leader is credited with saying, "I have
nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat"?
Rei: I think it's often misquoted. And it's Winston Churchill.
<ding>
Dean: Yes, it is misquoted, but what I gave you is the correct one. And
yes, it was Churchill. No strikes for you.
<Dean turns around to face the cameras>
That's it. That's the end of the first round. And as you can see by the
scoreboard...
Strikes Name
=============================
--- 1. Justin Lollie
XXX 2. Tom Beals
--- 3. Mark Jeffries
--- 4. David Hammond
--- 5. Bob Pollett
--- 6. Chico Alexander
--- 7. Jerry Depew
--- 8. Alan MacNeill
--- 9. Mitch Groff
--- 10. Rei Nakazawa
This is going to be fun! A whopping nine players with no strikes! Frankly,
I'm not surprised, considering that we have the best players here. After
this quick break, it will be one down, nine to go. But only three of them
will advance to the Final Round to play for $100,000. Stay tuned for Round
2 after this.
<applause as camera swings around the studio>
