Charlie Brill is still alive today (and has been married to Mitzi McCall for
over 30 years) and still in a television series that we might know of on the
USA network.
I was watching episodes of "Silk Stalkings" (reruns on M-F and new/current eps
on Sunday nights) and since the early 1990s Charlie Brill's roll has always
been the stressful Captain Harry Lipschitz on this USA network drama. He's
more serious nowadays still with glasses, but no perm or moustache. Watch this
show and find out!!!

ME: Charlie and Mitzi are good pals of mine. Charlie has been
appearing for some time as a regular on the TV series SILK STALKINGS.
Mitzi has also appeared on the show and has been busy as a TV writer
and actress. Recently, NBC was running a promo in which she played a
woman teaching a class of immigrants.
They're both very active in voiceover work. A few years ago, I
directed them in the title roles of the cartoon series, MOTHER GOOSE &
GRIMM, based on the comic strip. And they pop up all the time in
commercials and on radio. (I was just watching the Albert Brooks
film, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE, the other night. Mitzi is the voice of the
woman on the telephone at the car dealership.)

I don't know if it's still airing (it wasn't renewed for a second season), but
Mitzi was a regular as Carol Leifer's mom on the WB sitcom Alright Already.
I honestly hadn't heard of them when Tattletales and The Gong Show (and
especially Rhyme and Reason, which they were on all the time) aired. It's nice
to be able to put together some background.

I do believe Charlie and Mitzi were doing their comedy act on one of the first
Ed Sullivan shows the Beatles performed on , in 1963. A friend told me they
were later interviewed about that, and how wild that night was. It was
Tattletales that I discovered them on, however.
>Dick
>Gautier & Barbara Stuart. (I still want to know if the latter couple are

Dick was interviewed on GSN last year and said they had divorced.
As you know Bobby Van died in 1980 with brain cancer. Ironic how Bert Convy
died with the same disease 11 years later. Convy had just got married for the
2nd time with his girlfriend he had during his Super Password reign.
Dick Gautier and Barabara Stewart divorced in 1985. Which leads to another
question...Where are they now?
>I do believe Charlie and Mitzi were doing their comedy act on one of the first

ME: Yeah. In the Billy Crystal movie MR. SATURDAY NIGHT, there's a
sequence wherein his character -- a stand-up comic -- is attempting to
perform on the Sullivan show the same night that the Beatles made
their debut. The scene is admittedly based on the stories Charlie and
Mitzi tell of doing the show that night and having their routine bomb
because the audience was full of screaming teen-age girls who wanted
Ringo.

ME: Dunno about Barbara but Dick is still very active as an actor,
especially in the voiceover area. I ran into him at the Magic Castle
at lunchtime about two months ago and I told him I'd just seen him on
a TATTLETALES rerun. He remembered the specific episode and was still
embarrassed at something he said on the show.
AND WHAT MIGHT THAT BE? :)
Cartoon Network airs these episodes occasionally under the title Back to
Bedrock.

Do you think they have "what if" thoughts of where their career might have
gone if they hadn't been overshadowed by the Fab Four that night? Carol Burnett,
for one, really broke through with her appearance on Sullivan, performing "I Lost
My Heart Over John Foster Dulles".

• They are a husband and wife comedy team, sorta in the same vain as
Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara (Stiller & Meara).
• Both Charlie/Mitzi & Jerry/Anne gained fame, in large, to their
appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show.
• CB & MMc appeared on most game shows as a couple (Tatteltales, Rhyme &
Reason,...)
• Mitzi has done many cartoon voices, the one I remember is Penny on The
Pebbles and Bamm Bamm Show of the 70s...Oddly enough, the Hanna-Barbera
people made Penny to look like Mitzi just a bit!!
• And like Stiller & Meara, Charlie & Mitzi are still married for 30+
years!!

ME: I don't think Charlie and Mitzi felt that that one appearance hurt
their careers in any way. And the truth is that, in spite of the
audience screaming, they didn't do poorly that night.
