PREVIOUSLY ON MILLIONAIRE:
Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to successfully climb to the top of Mount
Everest, but he didn't climb it because it was there. George Mallory did. That
mistake ended up costing a contestant $32,000.
Meanwhile, the next contestant seems to run out of LifeLines in 10 questions.
Then, he makes a Joe Trela-like comeback to go all the way to $500,000. On the
last question, he gets stumped. Well, he still gets $500,000!
At the end of the show, we re-acquaint ourselves with one of the contestants
from the very first show, Richard Rosner. He has $4000 now... can he turn it
into a lot more money? It's time to find out...
WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?
Richard was one of the first contestants, but he didn't get in the Hot Seat;
David Korotkin and Hillary Daw did. Richard had to wait a long while until his
name got back on that list of ten.
Y'know, if Richard was balding, he'd look a lot like Tank Abbott. That would
be fitting, considering he's been a bouncer for a long time.
Rundown: Richard has $4000. 8 away from the million.
$1000 is his current guarantee value; if he gets three more right, he
guarantees $32,000.
All three LifeLines remain.
For $8000:
Which was is depicted in the book "The Red Badge of Courage"?
C - US Civil War.
For $16,000: What capital city listed here is located at the highest altitude
above sea level?
A. Mexico City B. Quito C. Bogota D. Kathmandu
He has an inkling about Mexico City. And Kathmandu.
He's going to Phone a Friend. It's Michael, a writer.
Michael says that if he had money at risk, it'd be Kathmandu, because it's at
the foothills of the Himalayas.
Regis: You know, you've waited months and months to get back on the show, and
now, here we are, waiting for your answer! (laughter)
"D. Kathmandu."
"You know I have to ask it..."
"No, don't ask it, I'm just saying it..."
"Take as much time as you need."
"D.
Kathmandu.
Final answer."
*light up D*
I'm going to build this up whether you like it or not.
You said D - Kathmandu.
If it's D, you're still in the game with $16,000. If it's not D, the game's
over and you lose $7000.
You said D.
You said D after calling your friend ... he gave you 90% assuredness that it's
D.
Now...
Had he said C.... he would have lost $7000.
Had he said A.... which was his first inclination...
.....
..... he would have lost $7000.
So it's either B or D.
If it's D, he's still in it.
If it's B, the game is over.
You said D.
D - Kathmandu.
Had you said B - Quito ...
.....
.....
..... you would have won $16,000. It's the wrong answer.
And after 11 months of waiting, Richard Rosner walks away with only $1000.
Reege tells us that the producers must have had some mercy for Richard,
because the 50/50 would have knocked out BOTH A AND D.
