As you all know, it was 22 years ago today TV viewers first heard Gene Wood
say:

Ace is high
Deuce is low
Call it right
And win the dough
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

And so launched <Jim Perry>the game of decisions, where you can win a
fortune on the turn of a single card.</Jim Perry> The game play was
exciting, and we are all addicted to the theme, and one of us (Randy) even
worked there. But what made the original NBC version stand out from later
editions was the opening poem. What was (or were) favorite opening poem(s)
from the show? Here are some of my picks:

If you're feeling bored,
Don't flip your lid
Just tune us in
You'll be glad you did
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

Deuce is a saint
Eight is a sinner
If luck is a lady
You'll go home a winner
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

Yell higher, yell lower
And hope that you're right
Don't fret if you're wrong
Jim Perry won't bite
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

Aces and deuces
Are the best of the deck
They give you the courage
To play the rest of the deck
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

And of course, these two need some work:

Call the cards right
And you'll need a shotgun
To guard the cash you win
From Goodson-Todmun.
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

You can't win trips
You can't win furs
But lots of cash
Can all be yurs
Oooooooonnnnnnnn Card Sharks!

BTW, you can get a couple more in .wav format at David Livingston's site.

This one, from a 1978 ep:

"One player watches red cards,
The other watches blue,
But the IRS is out there,
Watchin' both of you...
...Oooooonnnnn Card Sharks!"

Here's one that needed some work, but was fondly remembered by the GSC4
gang:

"Turn the cards,
Don't let 'em fool ya,
Call 'em right,
And win the moolya?
Ooooonnnn...Card Sharks!"

(Gene actually read the last line as if asking a question...you could tell
he hadn't been given the copy ahead of time...and after Jim said his hellos,
he even pointed out to the poem's author, " 'Fool ya' and 'moola' do not
rhyme!")

I'd still like to know if the one GSN is using on their ads ever appeared
on the show.

I've heard the one about "And you could win enough for a tank of gas" a
couple times, and it's cute, if a little indicative of the Card Sharks ad
nauseum references to inflation, high gas prices, the way kids are today
and how traditional elderly Japanese people are.

If you saw gas prices today, that holds even more true now. :-) I have that
in my collection (as all of those poems I mentioned are).

Oh, come on. Gas is still cheap in the US by basically any standard you
like. Plus, what exactly do people -think- happens to a nonrenewable
resource? Hell, this price increase is only because of "artificial" short
supply. Wait until there's a real shortage...

Here's one I just thought of that uses what I think is everyone's favorite

think it might if the show were still on today:

and Gilbert might shout, YOU FOOL!
But get a deuce and say higher,
and we will all agree, that's cool!

I think Gene Wood might have used these particular poems to wipe
his ass.

That sounds like something Richard Dawson might have submitted,
if he had actually liked the show.

How so? $1.269/gallon seems quite reasonable to me.

$1.269?! Here in SW MI, the lowest I've seen this week was $1.339!
