Time for another round or two of T. Jay's Name That Tune!!! Another major G/S
Encyclopedia oversight has led me to submit this question to the atgs panel.

For a few seasons on the Dating Game, circa the mid 60's, much of the theme
music was provided by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I do know that the
music they played when the contestant and the winning bachelor(ette) were just
about to meet, was "Lollipops and Roses".

My question is this -- for the main theme music did they use the song "Whipped
Cream" or "Spanish Flea"? (As suggestive as those titles sound it's legit!), Or
did they use both? Also were there any other H.A.& the T.B. songs that were
used on that show?

BTW: For those wishing to trade, I have put together an audio tape of several
original game show themes not subject to applause or voice-overs, including the
Alpert songs "Whipped Cream", and "Lollipops & Roses", and the theme to the
original Match Game, "Swingin Safari", by Burt Kaempert.

"Tijuana Taxi," I believe.

I don't know what the main theme to "The Dating Game" was, but I do know
that it was neither "Whipped Cream," which was used as the bachelorette
intro theme, nor "Spanish Flea," which was used as the bachelor intro

theme.

Okay, I know that there were various Herb Alpert pieces used as
incidental music on The Dating Game, but is this to say that
there were two different opening main themes to The Dating
Game? I have, on a Chuck Barris album, the main theme to The
Dating Game and it's the only opening theme I ever remember
hearing...the album was released in 1973...this track is
definitely NOT a Herb Alpert track...question is, if there were
two themes, what year did the Barris track replace the Alpert
track?

No Herb Alpert composition ever functioned as the official theme of "The
Dating Game." The original theme was performed by Chet Baker (brilliant
trumpeter ultimately destroyed by drink) and The Mariachi Brass and is
entitled "The Dating Game." It was later re-recorded by Milton Delugg.

But a couple of Alpert cuts were definitely used as instrumental music.
The person who asked the question was brought on with "Whipped Cream" and
the person who won the date had "Lollipops And Roses" played beneath.

Bonus question: who brought the Tijuana Brass to the attention of Chuck
Barris, and how did that person become familiar with them?

Probably some record producer, but there is another connection between
the TJB and Chuck Barris:

When Herb Alpert took the TJB on tour in the 80's his second trumpet
player was Bobby Findley, who played trumpet in the "Gong Show" band. (His
brother Chuck is the trumpeter on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.")

I heard it was Jim Lange, a local S.F. disc jockey at the time, who
introduced Chuck Barris to the Tijuana Brass. Lange used to play their
music on the radio.

Lange was also the announcer for The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show when it
originated at KGO-TV in S.F. In fact, I wonder whether his connection to
ABC in San Francisco had anything to do with his getting The Dating Game
on ABC.

There was only *one* main theme to "Dating Game". Originally it was a
guitar lead, a la the rock bands of that era. There was always that Herb
Alpert music playing in the background. Later on, the first version was
replaced by a Herb Alpert-TJB version (or a good ersatz TJB version) of
the same tune.
