I've noticed watching the reruns of the "Newlywed Game" that the original music
that was used as a background to the announcing of the prizes has been covered
up by a second "layer" of music, making it sound like their are two songs
playing at the same time.

Has anyone else noticed this, and if so, why would this be done?

Thanks,
Robert

I've noticed it, and all I have to say is that it's very annoying to listen to.
Chuck Barris, what were you thinking!?

It's been claimed that there's a music rights problem, but I've heard
the same cues on "Treasure Hunt" and "Three's A Crowd" in the clear. It
really sucks to watch these "classic" Newlyweds (which are the only ones
GSN seems to have.. what about the '84 version?)

Maybe they just wanted it to sound better? Of course, IMHO it didn't.

GSN has the Newlywed Game from all of its years. Of course GSN has the 80s
version! :-)

I'd like to see GSN run the 1984 ABC one-week NG. Does anyone remember
what this version looked or sounded like?

How did Jim Lange do as host?

This is more fun than a Big-Money Super Match. bcla...@webtv.net

IIRC, they used the same set (or a replica) of the original ABC/70's
syndie set.

Nope, they gave us the first look at the 1980s (1985- ) set and used the
same theme as the '80s version.

The Original Newlywed Game Music (1966-197?) was more of a Tijuana
Brass-type style with xylophones in the background and IIRC had a bit of
a fuller reverb sound...

The 70's Syndie version dropped the xylophones and had a shallower sound
while adding more saxophone, especially during the musical "bridge"...

The 1997 Version is all-synthesized and based on the 70's syndie
version. They added the short pieces that take the show into and out of
commercials, which no prior version did.

One thing that really ticks me off about syndie game shows of late is
that they incorporate between 1 and 3 "mini commercials" about their
next episode. I know that these are designed for the lower budget
stations so they can re-air that 10 or 15-second spot throughout the day
and just add their time & logo chryon at the end of the spot.

First off, this was originally an idea that was taken from the talk
shows. You'd think the producers would have a little more class than to
copy a talk show idea!!

Secondly, they usually show the most exciting part of the next episode
albeit a little spliced. Isn't that spoiling the surprise of "those
unpredictable newlyweds" for the rest of the viewers????

Finally, why do they need to advertise the next day's show in the middle
of THAT day's show up to 3 times?? I think if you are watching that
episode and enjoy the show and are a regular viewer:

a) You already know Damn well that the show will be on again at the same
bat time on the same bat channel

b) You dont really need to see ALL the highlights of the next episode,
for why would you want to watch it then????

c) Wouldn't it make sense to air these promos ELSEWHERE in the day to
attract more viewers???

d) Wouldn't you much rather see that precious minute or so devoted to
gameplay rather than seeing a reminder of what you are watching????

HELLO......McFLY!!!!!??????

The differences are so slight....but the 1997 version is a complete
re-recording of the 1977 version.

I can tell the biggest difference in the drums. The 1977 drums are
louder in the mix, and the whole thing has somewhat of a disco vibe,
much like the 1978 "Dating Game" music.

Here's a question about the main theme music of "The Newlywed Game." How does
the 1977-80 theme music and 1997-present theme music differ or are do they both
sound the same and freshly updated ? Just want to know.

Move closer to your world, T. Jay. Watch Action News.

I tend to agree with that; when they do those promos, it seems they spoil the
next day's or next week's festivities.

One game show that was guilty of doing that was TNPiR94. Its promos for the week
highlighted moments *for* *that* *week*! For example, there was that one
contestant that only took three of her Ten Chances to win all three prizes, and
they showed that during that same week. I was going, don't you think you should
hold on to those promos until the *following* week after those shows have aired?

Stations these days don't necessarily believe in promotion of their lineup,
especially with new shows on the block. Channel 13 doesn't promo Wheel or
Jeopardy! as much as it did in the '80s, simply because it's been around much
longer. They would much rather promo more topical or changing-daily shows like
the newsmagazines or their talk and talk/variety shows rather than the game
shows, where generally the same thing happens every day.

A lot of times, spots like that are fed to the stations before or after the
main program.

I very much agree. By the way Jeremy , with all this Watch Action News
stuff , I wonder , do you live somewhere near Portsmouth , Ohio? There
is a station that carries Action News , I believe it's channel 13 , the
same one that carries TPIR.
Just curious.

I'll expand on T. Jay's and Jeremy's posts because I have the same
problem...It seems Wheel and Jeopardy have promos like "See if Joe
Schmoe can knock off Jane Doe and John Q. Public to become a five time
undefeated champion" as they show clips from the upcoming Jeopardy, or
"From the middle of Farmer Bill's cornfield in the boonies of Kansas,
its Wheel on the Road" showing clips from the week's episode. Now
granted, they don't show these ads during the show. However, the fact
of the matter is the ads exist and there are stations that air these ads
(not so much during the summer rerun period). I saw DG-NG hour a couple
of times when it was still airing in my area, and I was appalled that
they showed these ads. For a minute, I thought I was watching
Sp*****er. Anyways, now that I got this off my back, I'm going to go
chase a few cars right now...excuse me!

Unfortunately, this has become the common plan of action today. The idea is
that the better the scene, the more people they will draw in. What they don't
realize is that it ruins it and makes the show less entertaining. It's like
starting a descrption of Citizen Kane by identifying Rosebud.

>Finally, why do they need to advertise the next day's show in the middle

Because companies have started using that time to send the advertisements so
they won't have to send an extra transmission. The problem is that the stations
just see this as part of the show and air it.
