Well, I just recently obtained a rarity that everyone wants to get
their hands on. Believe me, this is worth seeing.

If you're interested, I'd volunteer to front the fee for some Web space for
one month to make the clip available to all.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, Shermy. If you want to see it,
you can trade for it, just like everyone else had to.

Um, I would suggest the donation of some web server space combined with
taking the trouble to sample off and digitize the clip would qualify as
"paying for your lunch".

But that's Matt's decision to make, and not yours.

*shakes head*

Well, so much for my attempt to do a nice thing. Of *course* I'd be
willing to blow a bunch of money, spend my time and effort assembling, and
then maintaining a download site even for a month to host a vid clip of a
guy I'd never met, who nevertheless was a friend to many regulars on
a.t.g-s, hitting it big on a game show from 20 years ago, just so I wouldn't
have to send something in return.

No good deed, as they say, goes unpunished.

I trust he will too, but that's because I think Matt is capable of making a
responsible decision, not because he owes any favor to whoever traded him
his copy of the tape...once it's HIS, it is his to do as he likes with it.

God forbid the "value" of your tape should be diluted because of the desire
to share the ultimate moment of a man loved by many on this group.

Um, as a regular poster to this newsgroup, and a member of this community,
when you make a post to the group, it IS my business. If you have "business"
that you consider "private", then conduct it in email.

To be perfectly honest, the "value" of a tape will not be diluted because of
a streaming video clip of a gauntlet win on Whew!, Randy or not. Real Media
files are fine for those who don't trade, but for those of us that do,
having the actual ep and watching it on our television sets will be
infinately better than a 320x240 picture at 15 frames per second (if that!).
It's just like me and my episode of the Shatner v. Chair clip on Francini's
site... a real video clip is all right, but the entire episode (in quadruple
resolution and double fps) is much sweeter.

Well, this all seems rather petty. There are many fans like myself
here who aren't part of all you guys mythical trading circuit, who
don't know any thing about Randy, but would still be interested in
downloading a video of this. I don't even know what game show we're
talking about.

Yeah, I second that emotion. First of all, the quality is (as they said
in those 80's NBA commercials) FANTASTIC! Sorry, but after watching
All-Star Saturday Night on tape, you tend to get a little nostalgic...

Anyway, I thought it was a great win, and I can't get over the clarity
of that great theme music! BTW, I got this about a week ago. Yeah, I
actually went all the way to L.A. to get my copy.... it is a LONG drive
from Riverside! So, thanks again Justin!

Absolutely not. As I said, it's Matt's decision to make, and I'm sure he has
a good reason for doing this, because I know that if Matt _could_ share it
with everyone, he would. Perhaps the only way he could get the tape was by
agreeing not to make any of it public at this time.

Now, if that's the case, I think that's a pretty shitty stipulation for
someone to make, but that's on the conscience of the person who made it, not
on Matt.

I think it's perfectly fine. This tape has been sought after for a long time.

Ever hear the phrase "good things come to those who wait?"

Many of us were not in Randy's inner circle and have no right to expect it for
free.

So politely: Can it.

Hey, I don't care either way, I don't trade tapes. Eventually the clip will
get digitized, I'm in no rush. Just stating an opinion. We do that around
here. I've noticed you're rather good at it.

Equally politely: Blow me if you don't like it.

Damn, I can't believe this thread is still going.

Here's the perspective from a fairly long-term semi-lurker, who doesn't
trade in the least (note: I've been listening to Weird Al for the last 30
minutes, so I'm decidedly fucked in the head right now)

Randy has basically been held out as being a huge piece of this community,
basically heart and soul of this place. I won't argue that here, even
though things seems to have changed very little save for who has inherited
his "duties", except maybe for the sentimental vote in the tournament.

Frankly, creating an artificial rarity by sitting on this seems... petty.
"Well we were his friend, and so we're going to sit on this as long as we
want." All it really does is make me ask a question that Randy likely
doesn't deserve: "Man, why are all of his friends such assholes?"

What we basically have here is a rare tape commodity, the highest quality
available episode of a show that, while it may exist, is gathering dust
indefinitely. With him not around, I'm assuming you're asking as he'd want
you to ask if he were around (which, depending upon your religious
viewpoint, he may or may not still be). Your actions here are the last
things we remember about him. Is the image you want of people who were too
emotional to let others in on this small view of him? To place so high a
value on a friggin' game show appearance discredits the values of everything
else he's accomplished in life. I'd hate to think that the most important
thing I'll ever accomplish in life is answering $200 Jeopardy level
questions while standing in front of a cardboard cutout of a vampire.
Somehow, I don't think he considered this the most important thing he ever
did, either.

Now, let me qualify my rant with this: in the end, it's not public property,
and owners of this tape are free to distribute or not distribute it at their
discretion. But activities like this cast an image both on the tape owners,
and on Randy. There's ultimately nothing intimate about this, regardless of
personal attachments by the tape owners.. It's a copy from a National
television show. He wasn't making this thinking what an intimate memory
this would be. He did it to be on television, to be in the public view.
That he's not around anymore doesn't change why he did it.

For the last two months, there's been this great, huge public mourning
session by pretty much everyone in here. This includes both people who knew
him personally, and in passing. Two months. If you've still got this kinda
problem about it, get some counseling.

Total speculation on my part:

I think the reason behind not putting up a vid clip just yet is to get the tape
into circulation - meaning those who want the episode get the episode, then,
once everybody has been settled that way, then someone can put up the video
clip.

I'm being unusually optomistic here, but I think that makes sense. There's no
real logic of NOT putting one up EVER. I mean, I would think Randy (were he
alive) would instantly put up the clip on his website as soon as he got it. So
why all of a sudden not make that a possibility? The only justification I can
come up with is to get the tape into trader's hands before it's available to
the general public via vid-clip.

Of course, if I'm wrong, and that's not the reason, then shame on all of you
for feeding into the heirarchy of "haves" and "have-nots". But, hey, like I
said, I'm being optomistic here that I will be able to see at some point.

So, I, uh, guess the password is "patience".

Simple... some people are so obsessed with their "collections" of items
which technically aren't theirs to begin with that they reflexively oppose
any attempt to share or distribute any item in said collection on grounds
that it makes their collections, and by reference themselves, less valuable
and unique.

Why didn't you "mind your own business" when the Colonel made his offer?

Seems to me that the old C.O. made a straightforward, reasonable offer.
Now, of course, the possessor of the clip is free to accept, reject, or
ignore the offer. And you have every right to stick your two cents
in--but don't then turn around and say "mind your own business" when
others comment as well.
