Boy, I've got to give credit to channel 2's marketing department--they
really managed to avoid creating *any* attention for the special, New
York-only DJs edition of The Weakest Link. How bad a job did they do? I
regularly read alt.tv.game-shows AND the New York Radio Message Board,
and I *still* didn't know that the DJs episode would be airing today. In
fact, I missed the first few minutes of the show. Oh, well, I thought
I'd pass along a bit of a recap since no one else seems to have, but
realize that I missed the beginning and don't have the thing on tape.

The contestants were (in no particular order):

Danielle Monaro of Z100 (Top 40)
Goomba Johnny of WKTU (Dance/Top 40)
Jamie Lee of WPLJ (Rock-leaning adult contemporary)
Mike Fitzgerald of WCBS-FM (Oldies)
Jeff Foxx of WTJM (Urban adult contemporary, when this was taped)
Maria Garcia of WBLI (Top 40--she kind of doesn't belong, as WBLI is a
Long Island station, not a New York City station)

Not exactly the biggest stars in NYC radio, for what it's worth.

I tuned in as they were revealing the first round vote, which ends in a
tie between Danielle and Jamie. Strongest Link Mike votes for Danielle
because his 13-year-old daughter likes listening to Z100 more than his
own station.

Jeff gets voted off after round two. He's already been "voted off" in
real life--Jammin' 105, where he had only recently started co-hosting
the morning show with comedian George Wallace, flipped to hip-hop this
week as Power 105, with Dr. Dre and Ed Lover of Yo MTV Raps fame doing
the morning show.

Highlight of the third round is Goomba Johnny being asked in what
European country you would find the shipbuilding city of Gdansk, to
which he replies "Scandinavia". After being voted off for his trouble,
Johnny remarks, "It was like being on a ship of ignorance." Yes, I
suppose it was.

In the fourth round, NYC's most famous (arguably) radio personality is
mentioned--Mike is asked who played Howard Stern in the film Private
Parts, and Fitzgerald correctly notes that Stern played himself. I think
this was the only question about radio that was asked, although there
were a ton of questions that were New York-centric.

Maria gets both other votes in this round, leaving Mike and Jamie to try
to build up the pot and then play for it.

Unfortunately, there isn't a lot in the pot, and Jamie misses a couple
of questions in this round, so they only bank $750. When asked who
played Rollergirl in the movie Boogie Nights, she looks completely
mystified and opts for Jennifer Connelley.

Anyway, the pot ends up standing at an even if unimpressive $8000. Mike
is the strongest link (as he had been more than any other) and elects to
go first.

[All questions are paraphrased from memory]

Mike Q1: Charlton Heston starred in what film about New York citizens
surviving on an artificial food product?

A: I think he guessed The Omega Man, although I'm not positive. In any
event, he was wrong; the correct answer was Soylent Green.

Jamie Q1: What author and New York City mayoral candidate wrote such
books as The Naked And The Dead and The Executioner's Song?

A: (completely stumped) Ed Koch? Correct answer was Norman Mailer.

Mike Q2: What color results from the even distribution of all light on
the visible spectrum?

A: White. Correct.

Jamie Q2: What actor played the title role on HBO's The Larry Sanders
Show?

A: Larry Sanders. Correct answer was Garry Shandling.

Mike Q3: By definition, what word is the mathematical term meaning parts
per one hundred?

A: Centimeters. Correct answer was percentage.

Jamie Q3: What automobile gauge is used to measure the running of the
motor in revolutions per minute?

A: Odometer. Correct answer was tachometer.

So Mike, by virtue of one correct answer, earns $8000 for Variety
Children's Charity, which WCBS-FM has long supported.

Overall, not very impressive, although there really weren't many
embarrassing answers either.

We've already heard mention of a Chicago DJs edition, so I imagine these
will be turning up in a number of markets. I thought it had been said
that these would air during May sweeps, but obviously that wasn't the
case here. Perhaps some brave Pennsylvania affiliate will do a DJs
edition, invite General Blitz and myself, and really watch the sparks
fly! B^) (Disclaimer for the General: in posting this recap, I am in no
way implying that radio is a "real sport".)

Kinda strange that they would air that episode outside of sweeps. I
do mornings in Birmingham and taped a radio personality episode in
mid-December. Still haven't gotten the call regarding an airdate yet,
but this psrticular show featured jocks from Pittsburgh, Minneapolis,
Los Angeles, Chicago, Sun Valley, and me! I thought it might air in
February. Maybe they're doing a week similar to the Professions Week
in Feb. Either way, the show's not airing in Birmingham currently.
I've got VCRs rolling all over the country.

If anyone has any info on any of the other DJ shows, drop me a line at
tide...@earthlink.net. I know they've taped one with Chicago radio
folks. I'm interested in seeing whether we all looked like
jackasses!! Damn fun time, though!

I hear ya...the only reason I knew it was on was because Mike Fitzgerald
himself plugged the ep on CBS-FM around 9:15 the night before.

And again, thank you to CBS-FM for spoiling the outcome for me on my drive
home from work (I leave at 4:30).

Heh, I heard it plugged on the Best of Scott and Todd, with Jamie Lee
talking to the host...and I still forgot to tune in at 4. Missed it
by...that much.
