If the Eubanks Dream House was third place in the Nielsens of game show
ratings for Oct. 1983-Apr. 1984, why did it go off the air?

My own two cents: I was a big fan of the original version of Dream House that
was hosted by Mike Darrow from 1968-70, but didn't like the change they made in
'69 that resulted in only one game being played per program instead of two.
(They had three couples competing in the first game of that one, from which the
two top scorers from that game played the "Championship Round" for one of the
seven rooms of furniture they needed to win the house.)

The original version had some real drama and excitement to it, but with the
format change in '69 it was too tough for a couple to win a house. Yet I
considered the format of the '80s version hosted by Bob Eubanks to be _too_
easy (true-false and multiple-choice questions). Still, the "instant-win"
end-game with the electronic lock made for some drama at the end of each
program.

Ahem...Dream House was in third place in its TIME PERIOD in the Nielsens during
the time span given--trailing, among others, a little CBS show called THE PRICE
IS RIGHT...

When you're third out of three networks in a time period, no matter what the
format is or isn't, changes happen. As I've said, no doubt way, way, way, too
often, this is a business, folks, like it or not.

BTW, I might want to refer you all to an interesting series of articles in this
week's NATPE preview issue of BROADCASTING AND CABLE (no doubt, the intelligent
and insightful likes of Mr. Alliaume and Mr. Kaiser, among others, will
probably provide greater coverage and commentary). Some views from the
creative, distribution and station community on the fate of the genre,
including cable (finally, a Food Network spokesperson raves about READY! SET!
COOK!) and sort-of cable (recent inroads--including my house--notwithstanding,
we would include GSN in this category).

I'll reserve my own observations, if desired, until later...SL
