WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?
Tuesday, July 18, 2000

PREVIOUSLY ON MILLIONAIRE:

See what happens when we tighten up the purse strings at ABC. Three
contestants risk LifeLines (and one burns up everything) and end up back at
their respective Milestone points.

Now, we've all taken about three No-Doz right now for Lowell Ross, a patent
attorney, takes the stage to see...

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

Lowell is from Redmond, Washington, and got married on the Internet. How about
that!

Rundown:

Lowell has $2000. Nine away from the million.
He will take home at least $1000, but four more right answers guarantee
$32,000.
All three LifeLines remain.

For $4000: What is the last name of the central family on TV's "Party of
Five"?
A. Leery B. Salinger C. Walsh D. Bradford

Let's ATA: 3-80-9-8

He says B and wins $4000.

For $8000:
Which animal is NOT currently represented in a box of Barnum's Animal
Crackers?
A. Camel B. Elephant C. Moose D. Kangaroo

They've tightened up the purse strings here. I hear nothing but the think
music. He thinks he knows which animal doesn't belong here.

HE thinks it's C - Moose.

Moose is right!

For $16,000: In medical terms, alopecia is the loss of what?

Lowell is balding, but he doesn't know what alopecia is. How did he qualify to
get on the show? Daniel, his PAF, tells him that it is hair, without having
him reading the answers.

Of course, he's right.

Michael Davies was out here talking about his PAF for the thing. Interesting.
If he wins a lot of money, he'll take a trip to the North Pole with his wife.

For $32,000:
What resort town is the setting for the **1960** film "Where the Boys Are"?
A. Fort Lauderdale B. Myrtle Beach
C. Santa Monica D. Daytona Beach

The 50/50 leaves: A. Fort Lauderdale D. Daytona Beach

Let's see what he's going to do.

Let's see what his answer is...

He's going to take a while to think about it...

... and after all that ...

... he will say D.

It's the...

...

... wrong answer. He still has $1000.

FASTEST FINGER FIRST: Films, release, EARLIEST:

A. Sands of Iwo Jima B. The Mosquito Coast
C. The Beach D. Beach Blanket Bingo

Correct answer: A-D-B-C
3 of 10 right - winner: Bruce Andriatch, 6.24 seconds!

Bruce is from Buffalo, NY. He is the assistant city editor for the Buffalo
news. He and his wife, who met when they were 6 years old, have 4 kids.

Bruce was voted "one who would probably injure himself" in high school. One
time he caught a baseball and ran into a brick wall while doing it!

For $100:
Traditionally, what does a photographer say to get his subject to smile?
C - Cheese.

For $200: "Chopper" is slang for what?

For $1000: What type of clothing is a shift?
A. Dress B. Pants C. Socks D. Hat

Let's ATA: 83-5-3-9

A - Dress. No wonder he needed to ask the audience. The $1000 is safe.

For $2000: How was Joan of Arc executed?
D - Burned at the stake. Not C - Hung [sic]. Besides, Joan of Arc was female.

For $4000: What is the name for a word or phrase that is repeated to oneself
during meditation?
B - Mantra.

For $8000: What pro baseball team did Tommy Lasorda manage for 2 decades?
A - LA Dodgers.

For $16,000:
In 1982, who did Bryant Gumbel replace as co-host of the "Today" show?
A. Hugh Downs B. Tom Brokaw C. Jim Hartz D. Joe Garagiola

Hmmm. Looks like a stumper... let's say B - Tom Brokaw.

He's risking $7000 on this answer...

... and ...

... he now has ...
...

...

$16,000.

For $32,000:
What state's motto is: "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you"?
A. Rhode Island B. Florida C. Michigan B. Florida

The 50/50 leaves: B. Florida C. Michigan

Let's PAF. It's Jeff. He doesn't know, but would guess C.

Hmmm. They're on the same wavelength.

However, he is unsure of the answer, so he walks.

The correct answer was C - had he stuck with his gut instinct, he would have
locked $32,000.

FFF: #1 Albums on Billboard, EARLIEST first.
A. Born in the USA B. Frampton Comes Alive!
C. Spice D. Ropin' the Wind

Correct answer: B-A-D-C

For $2000: What's an egret?
D - Bird.

For $4000: What literary character's main enemy was the Sheriff of Nottingham?
A. Robin Hood B. William Tell C. Peter Pan D. Robinson Crusoe

"I don't think it's A or C. Let's use the 50/50."

A. Robin Hood D. Robinson Crusoe.

D - Robinson Crusoe.

Women suck on this game. And she's another reason why. Regis tried, tried to
get her to Phone a Friend...

FFF: Major North American cities from NORTH to SOUTH.
A. Cincinnati B. Edmonton C. Guadalajara D. Juneau

Correct answer: D-B-A-C
5 of 8. Winner: Jim Lairmore, 5.70 seconds.

it overboard?
C - Deep six.

I was about to start throwing things at the TV when this lady missed! This seems
more like a $1,000 question because I'm sure almost everybody would get this
question right without any lifelines. IMHO, I don't think anybody on this
newsgroup could've missed that question.

You think WWTBAM is raiding GREED's unused stacks for Q's? I mean, the
Charms blo-pop question had me hearing Chuck Woolery not Regis. I
could just SEE Regis rejecting Robinson Crusoe for Robin Hood if it
were GREED but that's me.

Well, this series had a following, but not as big as other shows, so
using an ATA was OK here.

I have to go out and get some of this...haven't enjoyed these in a
while.

When this question came on, the first thing that came to mind was
those ads for Propetia...hence Hair. And since he was balding, I
thought that he would know...Oh well

This was tough. Good guess, but he was probably thinking with respect
to today's spring break activities. Too bad that 1960s trends were
different.

I haven't heard of this either. Good man for using his ATA.

Good logic employed here. That, and I always remembered Gumble and
Pauley on Today, and I remember Brokaw anchoring the evening news for
as long as I remember.

This was tough. Both have peninsulas, and the obvious choice was not
the right choice.

This was too easy to comment on, but granted she was nervous. In the
end though, I was practically yelling the answer.

Mental note: Always use a phone that has a history of not cutting out
when qualifying. That's what happened to me, and my first chance went
down the drain before I could even input a blasted FF answer!!!

She deserves nothing!!! What was that insanity??? Geez... Contestants
like that will ensure that the purse strings are nice and tight.

No offense, as this is one of the questions where "only easy if you know the
answer" is pretty defensible, but I'd think Michigan was the obvious answer,
seeing as how its composition of two peninsulas would make it biting state motto
humor.

... says he who heard the motto several years back, and lives in/near Florida.

I have two ABC stations on my cable service ... one normal, one in "creeping
color" (which looks especially well-placed on Millionaire's set of blues and
grays >_< ). But, seriously, I believe Regis mentioned he was wearing his
orange tie in honor of the summer heat.

I got it right while I was playing along with the "Enhanced TV" game, but I
missed this bonus question in the game that was asked during one of the
commercial breaks.

The question: What color tie is Regis wearing tonight?

I said "A" (Red) because Regis was shown on my computer monitor that evening
wearing a red tie -- but the correct answer was "C" (Orange)!

Michael Brandenburg
(IRS employee since 1984 -- and if you want to know how I'm planning to
spend about $370 real soon, the answer is a new 27" color TV for my living room
so I can put my current living-room color set in my office next to my computer
so I can watch it while playing ETV "Millionaire" instead of that little 5" B&W
set I'm presently using!)

Of course, he did talk about his choice of tie color at the beginning of
the show, which is probably why they used the question. Or maybe he
mentioned it because they were going to ask.
