This is my first time posting here on a.t.g-s so please be gentle with me. I
have a question that has been on my mind for a while now.
Recently, Charles Grodin on his CNBC talk show, mentioned that he had recently
received a royalty check from (Johnny) Carson Productions for $2.33, for his
appearence on either one of those videos of "Tonight Show" highlights, or the
re-runing of one of those "Tonight Show" anniversary specials, that have on
aired on The Family Channel. That got me to wondering. Do game show hosts
like Bob Barker, Jim Lange, Chuck Barris, Tom Kennedy, or even the estate of
Bill Cullen get money for episodes that are re-run on GSN. For that matter,
do any of those stars that appear on game shows, like Jaye P. Morgan, Billy
Crystal, Charles Nelson Riley, or Betty White, get a check for these
appearences.
Thanks in advance
Jess

well, when Mr. Game Show was still appearing on GSN, I called in once asking
about that, the producer that answered the phone didn't want me to ask him, and
he himself said that he does not believe so.

No need -- this is an excellent question!

Most of the celebs and hosts do receive a very minor royalty for each airing.
It's a standard SAG/AFTRA clause of the day. I doubt any of them expected the
shows to be rerun, however. I don't know how much the residual would be,
though.

Not only does talent receive royalties, but so do directors and, of all people,
musical composers. Ironcially, producers usually do not receieve royalties
unless it was specifically written into their personal services contract. So
for a typical episode of Match Game '75, royalties are paid to:
Gene Rayburn
Six panelists
The Estate of Johnny Olson
Marc Breslow (director)
Composers of Match Game music (Score Productions)
Royalties are not paid to
Producers
Writers
Production Staff
CBS Crew
The residuals that game show hosts receive vary, especially if the
game show originally aired many years ago. Typically, the residuals are pretty
high within the first three years of syndication, after that, they fall. Also,
the residuals a game show host does receive is based heavily on the AFTRA/SAG
contract. Many game show hosts still receive a small residual check for
programs that were produced over thirty years ago that GSN is running today.
Hope this helps. Wally Bruner Jr.
Glad to have you aboard, Wally. Keep on posting!
Actaully, Gil Fates covered this in his book on WNL. He stated that (when
WML @25 was produced), that teh panel would get paid for rerun
performances of the show.
So, on WML @25, the only folks who got royalty checks were John Daly, the
panelists, teh estates of the deceased ones.

To clarify, John Daly, the alive panelists and the estates of the deceased
panelists got residuals because they were for longer than two minutes. To get
the show produced under the low budgets that ABC latenight offered them, they
decided to only pay residuals to people who were seen in the final program for
two minutes or longer and got permission from all celebs to use clips. After
AP Pamela Usdan timed everything out carefully, only the regulars got
residuals.
This has become standard practice for TV clip/retrospective specials.
