WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?
Thursday, August 3, 2000

PREVIOUSLY ON MILLIONAIRE:

Daniel Brekke did some good stuff the other night. Unfortunately, he couldn't
remember what an ion was (and why wasn't one of the choices isotope?), and he
took home $32,000.

Steve Cornman, Judy Bartoletti's best friend, arrived on the scene to pick up
some more money for the Millionaire twosome... he got $125,000. If he played
cards more often, he could have been a 13 Clubber. But still, lots more money!

David McClane totally guessed and screwed someone out of a shot at the
Million. He Asked The Audience on what seemed to be a pop culture question at
$300... now, how will he do with the rest of his ladder tonight on...

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

David looks like he might take some trips if he wins a lot of money. David is
a freelance writer in Portland, Oregon.

Rundown: David has $300. 12 questions away from the million.
2 more locks in $1000, and 7 more locks in $32,000.
2 LifeLines remain: 50/50 and PAF.

For $500: What does R stand for in the financial acronym IRA?
A - Retirement. One of the choices isn't "Republican."

For $1000: Which is a type of pain reliever?
D - Analgesic. The $1000 is safe.

For $2000: What famed hotel lends its name to a sarcastic Muppet character?
A. Plaza B. Marmont C. Waldorf D. Ramada

C - Waldorf.

For $4000: In March 2000, Michael Jordan told the Chicago press he planned to
shift his focus away from what activity?
A. Golf B. Endorsements C. Movie acting D. Baseball

I can't stand this guy. He just rambles annoyingly, even worse than Kati.

But, eventually, he says B - Endorsements.

And....

It's the right answer!

For $8000: Where is the United States' Pentagon located?
A. Washington DC B. Maryland C. West Virginia D. Virginia

NB: Having been to the Pentagon, this is a trick question (a good one for
$32K!), and if the 50/50 doesn't leave D - Virginia, then we are ALL going to
be up in arms.

We're calling Terry, his PAF. Terry says D.

And David also says D.

And ...

He's RIGHT! Take that, Wipeout!

For $16,000: What subject matter was artist Frederic Remington well-known for
sculpting and painting?
A - American West.

For $32,000:
For approximately how many million years have the dinosaurs been extinct?
A. 16 B. 100 C. 25 D. 65

He's got $32,000! It's the free shot for $64,000:
During World War II, what general was widely knokwn by the name "Desert Fox"?
He's smiling again! B - Erwin Rommel.

Diamond Dozen time for $125,000:
In which of these films do BOTH Ben Affleck and Matt Damon NOT appear?
A. Dogma B. Good Will Hunting C. The Talented Mr. Ripley D. Chasing Amy

Hmmm. In his thinking and discussion, he narrows it down to one choice...
C - The Talented Mr. Ripley.

And ...

...

... he has ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS!

For $250,000: What kind of powder is inside an Etch A Sketch drawing toy?
A. Graphite B. Aluminum C. Silicon D. Magnesium

He will take the 50/50:
B. Aluminum D. Magnesium

He's convinced that he's got it more than 50/50 there.

He finally chooses B - Aluminum.

I will tell him right now...

Had he chose D ...

...

...

... he would have lost $93,000 - HE'S IN THE 13 CLUB!

Can he make it to half a million? Here it is for $500,000:
Most of the world's supply of cork comes from a species of what tree?
A. Oak B. Hickory C. Aspen D. Birch

Hmmm. He knows his trees, but he just isn't sure about this question.
Well... he's going to keep the money.

The correct answer is A... and he still has $250,000!

FASTEST FINGER FIRST: TV series, debut, MOST RECENT first.
A. Just Shoot Me B. The Jeffersons C. Roc D. Growing Pains

Correct answer: A-C-D-B
4 of 10 right. Winner: Chana Scwadlenak, 4.67 seconds.

A - Mork & Mindy. The $1000 is safe!

For $2000: What color are sepia-toned photographs?
A - Brown.

For $4000: In which state is the Erie Canal located?
A. New Jersey B. Ohio C. Pennsylvania D. New York

Let's ATA: 1 - 20 - 28 - 51

She says D - New York...

.... and she has $4000.

For $8000:
The nutritional philosophy of the Atkins diet suggests restricting what?
A. Proteins B. Fluids C. Carbohydrates D. Fats

D - Fats.

Wait, not so fast! Let's go 50/50:

A. Proteins C. Carbohydrates

Well, she changes her mind and says C - Carbohydrates.

And ...

...

She has $8000!

For $16,000:
Members of what filmmaking family wrote, directed, and appeared in the 2000
film "Scary Movie"?
A. Wayans B. Arquette C. Farrelly D. Bridges

anyone who can provide solid evidence of what?

The PAF is her academic advisor Dan.
Dan guesses on this one. What guess will he pick?

He can't.

So *she'll* take the guess and the risk on D - Cure for Cancer.

Well, so much for the $16,000...

"The $1,000,000 ______ Challenge is a serious contest to reward and publicize

Chana takes home $1000.

James Randi is best known as "The Amazing Randi". You may have heard of him
from his confrontations with Uri Geller, the guy who claimed he could bend
spoons with his mind.

Interestingly, she managed to pick the only answer that *has* a legitimate
example. Many forms of cancer are curable these days.
