Is Pearson selling out? Or catching up to Wheel/Jeopardy! slot machines?
Actually, Pearson already has aready OK'ed video slot machines for
Family Feud and Press Your Luck, which are now found in several casinos
at least in Vegas. And you can technically add Monopoly and Jumble,
though they are based on their original concepts and not the game shows
based on the games themselves. Plus you add Wheel, J! and Let's Make A
Deal (played them all last February), and you've got a healthy supply of
game show slots. And you never know, there could someday be a game
show-themed casino in Vegas.
I think that would be a great slot machine for TPiR. There are already
many slots that play for cars and trucks as the top prize. Plus look at
all the pricing games they could incorporate into the slots for coin
prizes:
"Now you get to play PL!NKO, for a chance to win up to 50,000 nickles in
cash!!!"
I'm surprised Caesar's Palace never came out with a game based on
Caesar's Challenge.

Most of the video slot machines (and even some of the ones with reels and a
video screen above) have elaborate bonus games that take place. Since the
slot version of TPiR is being developed by Silicon Graphics (the makers of
the Odyssey slots -- a giant widescreen on its side with a handle), I'm sure
we'll see some really interesting use of graphics and pricing games and the
like.
I don't know much more than what I read in the Harrah's magazine myself, but
I can speculate on how it might go.
OK, say you spin and line up at least three "TPiR" symbols on a payline.
That takes you to the bonus game, which starts you in Contestant's Row. You
either get to bid on something (which possibly wins you a few coins) or
you're immediately called up to the stage to be next to Bob.
Then the machine randomly chooses a pricing game (Plinko, Spelling Bee,
etc.) and you play it and win some more coins. And if you achieve "X"
number of coins in that game -- or win it -- then you get to go onto the
Showcase Showdown. Maybe there's the Wheel in between that...who knows.
And at the SS, you choose a door and perhaps there's the big jackpot in
there or some other nice amount of coins. Then it returns to the reels and
you spin them again.
It -seems- like a long bonus game, but if you're good at them, then that's
obviously what you want.
Well, I'm guessing the folks in Vegas have never heard of a game show entitled
"The Joker's Wild." Ironic?

Ok, get the Twinkie out of your mouth and read the original post. Real slot
machines -- not the game show with the giant one. There's no TJW slot
machine that has been developed by IGT or WMS Gaming or Silicon Gaming.
There should be, but there isn't at this point.
No wonder people fight in here. All the so-called "experts" apparently
can't be troubled to actually READ the posts people make....
Flames to dev/null
OK, I think *you* need to reread that post. What I meant was that it was ironic
that there is NOT a Joker's Wild slot machine; I read the initial post and
understood clearly what was being said. Thank you very much.
I'm just back from NATPE in Vegas, where, coincidentally, I stayed at
Harrah's. The "2nd generation" of "Jeopardy!" video machines are on the
casino floor and offer suprisingly advanced game play. They are
also "deep" with all of the music and effects from the show, in
addition to tons of voice tracks from Alex and Johnny. Alex reads the 6
categories with each new cycle, and the bonus with three contestants on
the touch-screen is quite elaborate.
Seems that they can adapt any number of TPIR elements to a slot, if
that's the goal. It would join others I saw last week including
everything from PYL to "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Adams Family" machines!
While I swear by Blackjack and Craps, while crossing the casino floor I
was drawn to a WOF machine that was playing the show's full closing
theme, in stereo, continuously for at least 5 minutes following a big
win before the casino crew finally arrived, hand-paid the jackpot and
reset the machine!

So Randy, is there any game-show news from NATPE that you can tell us?
Is there or is there not a pitch for Pyramid? Is Card Sharks going to
be given the go for the fall? Are there any other game shows offerings
for the fall that may have snuck in? Will there be a mass cancellation
of Jenny, Ricki, Montel & Jerry (one could only hope)?

The results of the selling frenzy will hit the trade publications over
the next couple of weeks. I'm hesitant to make any statement that could
be in any way construed as breaching confidentiality... after all, this
is a high-stakes business, and I greatly value my relationships with
the major players (Sony, Pearson, etc.). Still, I consider a number of
the posters and lurkers here to be friends, and appreciate your
support. I'm certainly not violating any confidences by reviewing the
following items which have already been officially announced and/or
well publicized:
1. Sadly, the market has been extremely tight for games this year. The
reasons: the overwhelming majority of the court and the hour-long talk
shows are returning; that's a lot of airtime. Also a couple of new
talkers have been cleared in the hopes of eventually inheriting the
thrones of the queens who are rumored to be nearing the ends of their
reigns (Oprah and Rosie). One of the new hour talkers has been
particularly well received in part because it is being Exec. Produced
by Barbara Walters. Also among the talkers, "Men Are From Mars, Women
are From Venus" has been retooled in an attempt to keep it on-air.
2. PYRAMID was NOT offered. I hear that it is being pitched for a
network run (the pending writers' and talent strikes may make the show
more attractive) and/or will be offered for syndie next year. As the
current market is especially tight for new shows to find new
clearances, this seems like a very smart idea. As has been posted here,
Stephen Browne has done a wonderful job in remounting this classic; the
sales tape looks great.
3. I have nothing to add to the most recent news about TTTT, FF and CS
that has already been posted here; I hear optimism that any clearance
problems in New York can be overcome. For all involved, I certainly
hope so!
4. Our friend Todd Newton will most probably get a "go" very soon for
his and Leonard Maltin's new show "Hot Ticket" which is an interesting
and enjoyable new kind of movie news / movie review show.
5. Of the batch, two new dating shows were said to be strong: "Rondez
View" and "5th Wheel". They are a couple of new twists of the dating
genre, the latter has an element similar to that of the
successful "Temptation Island". "Who Wants To Date A Hooters Girl" is
still lining-up clearances, but is said to also have a "plan B" on the
table for a move to one of the popular, younger-skewing cable channels.
Our friend George Gray hosts that one.
On a personal note, I spent some time with a few of our hosts and
announcers, as well as some of the game show execs. I sensed that we
were all optimistic about the future of our genre, as we were basking
in the glow of the current week's TV Guide coverage. Either that, or it
was the Chardonnay from the Paramount booth :-)
"See ya on the Sweep"!
Best regards.

If indeed Steve Brown was responsible for this latest offal,
then he really *can't* mount a decent game show even when
he's *told* what to do. He and the rest of the morons at
Stone/Stanley deserve each other.

Both those machines have yet to make it to Atlantic City. Jeopardy!, however,
has made its debut in video slots (max coin is 45 nickels, or $2.25 a pop), as
have The Addams Family and I Dream of Jeannie (not GSs, but still).
I don't know if anyone over here went over the Video Jeopardy! slots, but
quickly, it's a 9-line, 5-nickel progressive slot from the friends at IGT
Games. The video mode is activated when you get three "J!" or "DJ!" symbols on
an active payline. It's played in 2 parts: the gameboard, complete with
categories, appears on the screen (and Alex reads them out). You pick squares
from the board revealing prize amounts. Find a Double and you double all the
values you've picked. The first part ends when you find "Final Jeopardy!". In
that round, you make one more pick, which is either a nice award, or a
doubler. Strategy is kind of important, considering that if you didn't pick up
much in the first part, you should hope to find the big number in the second
part. If you rack up lots of coin in the first part, you'd want to find the
doubler.
Switching gears, WMS Gaming has a slot out called "Perfect Match", whose bonus
game plays a lot like the old Winners' Board on Sale of the Century (complete
with wild "WIN" cards), except that you need three matching items to win.

And THAT'S The Truth. (Please don't smoke.)

Buddy,Andre,Kerry, Eddie, Gordon, Yoko, Flyin' Brian, Owen Hart ... Sigh ...
I didn't play that one, but does anyone know if you hit a bunch of
winning coin combinations, does he vocally try to add up all the
amounts, ala Pyramid's Winners Circle? :-D
"Lessee, three...four...six-fifty...that's 800 coins!!"

I hear there's a PRICE IS RIGHT slot. What's that like? The bar is a Bob
head? When you hit the jackpot, Rod sez "Come on down"? When you cash in your
chips, Bob sez "have your pet spayed or neutered"?
