I want to start off by saying I am as wild for the Joker's Wild as all
of you are. It's the first gameshow I remember seeing as a kid (the 77-
86 syndicated version). Anyway, the reason for this post is to ask
everyone who you would pick as your favorite TJW host, and why?
Finally, I read that Jack Barry passed away while jogging in Central
Park in 1984, and my question is why did Dan Enright select Bill Cullen
instead of Jim Peck as the new host since Peck subbed when Barry went
on vacation.

Jack Barry, IMHO, was the best host of TJW. His pace was much faster than
Cullen's. Bill failed to joke it up with contestants the way he did on
Blockbusters. Maybe those were his marching orders from B&E, but not doing
so makes him come off as dry in most cases. Jim Peck was perfunctory, but
nothing special as host.
I have seen posted here previously that the CBS owned & operated stations
"encouraged" the selection of a veteran host (namely Cullen) in order for
them to run the show on their stations.
A FEW THINGS I HAVE NOTICED:
1.) The slower pace of TJW under Cullen may not be his fault. I am
beginning to think the B&E bigwigs may have ordered things slowed down a
bit. Notice how much slower play goes under Caldwell than under Martindale,
too.
2.) Jack Barry does not seem nearly as grumpy as I recall him being when
these shows first aired. Also, he does not seem to be making as many errors
and malaprops (sp?) as I recall watching these shows in their original run.
Maybe as time went on, he got a little worse.
3.) Brett Sommers does not come off as a bitchy, angry, tacky woman, as I
recalled her during the previous run. Don't know where I picked that up
from originally, but she seems much more mellow than I recalled her being
watching these things the first time around.

I liked Jack the best, simply because it was really "his" show, although
Peck did just as good a job, IMO. Cullen was good, but the slow pace he
worked at, combined w/his frequent joking around, really cut into the game.

As to why Cullen was chosen to replace Barry instead of Peck, the
syndicators wanted someone w/more "name value", not to mention the fact that
Peck would've had to commute from his hometown of Milwaukee, while Cullen
was right there in LA.

Jack Barry is by far the best host of "Joker". Cullen was a great
replacement. In an email with a former B & E employee, he stated that Cullen
was chosen because he just finished "Hot Potato" and felt he was a good
replacement. Noticed that after Barry died, Enright didn't have much sucess
with shows? Barry could pitch a game and make it work. Tic Tac and Joker
died 2 years after Barry passed away and we didn't see much B&E shows until
1990 with the "New" Tic Tac... am I missing something?

For about the one millionth time on this newsgroup.....

I pledge allegeance to Jim Peck, sub-host of 'The Joker's Wild.'
And to that sex-appeal, for which he has,
one opportunity, under Barry-Enright, not to be,
with betrayal and heartbreak for all his fans.

ALL RIGHT! SO I WENT TOO FAR ON THIS ONE!!!!! But, you know what I
mean.....

IN that case, then how much name value did Colbert think Jim Caldwell had a
year later.

The only moderately successful B&E show post-Barry was Bumper Stumpers, and
that was done in assocation with Global Television and Wink Martindale
Enterprises.

Also notice how TJW ran when Peck filled in for Cullen for a cuple of weeks
during TJW's run. I believe it was Mr. Peck himself who stated that they
ran OUT of questions and had to stop tape to reload the questions.

Can't blame them for trying to cultivate a "new generation" emcee - it had
worked nicely for others in the then-recent past with Pat Sajak and Peter
Tomarken... and shortly, with Bob Goen.
