"Dumb Dora was so dumb she sent her cultured pearls to <BLANK>"
The contestant answered with *SCHOOL*
The audience likes the answer. Gene goes over to the celebrities:
ED ASNER: "College" <DING>
BRETT: "College" <DING>
CHARLES: "Scuba Diving School [With 'school' boxed in]" <BUZZ>
- Much booing ensues from the audience. Gene looks over to the judge and
then asks Charles, "Did you mean 'school?'" Charles replies, "What do you
think S-C-H-O-O-L spells?!?" A <DING> is heard. Gene comments on how the
judge must need a vacaction since this is the first time he has ever
changed a judgment.
DEBRALEE SCOTT: "Finishing School" <DING>...but then a <BUZZ>
- The audience, Debralee, and Gene don't catch the buzz.
RICHARD: "Finishing school" <BUZZ>
- Rumbling starts in the audience. Richard looks visibly upset (Well, he
pretty much looks glum throughout the whole episode anyway...but it's
really evident here.) and points at the word "school" on his card.
Debralee pipes in too saying that if "Scuba Diving School" was acceptable
then "Finishing School" should be too. More rumbling ensues. Gene
proceeds to tell everybody to "shut up" for a moment to clear things up.
Once it's made clear that Debralee's and Richard's answer aren't matches,
Richard argues that "college" shouldn't be counted either. The booing
gets increasingly louder bordering on mob-like hoopla. Richard refuses
to take his card down in protest much to the delight of the audience.
Debralee joins in the "protest." Gene asks Patti Deustch for her answer
and Patti hesitates saying that she's "scared." Brett and Charles,
wanting to move the show along, also ask Patti to show her card.
PATTI: "Night School" <BUZZ>
- More boos. Richard starts chanting revolutionary-style. One just waits
for a riot to ensue. Gene cuts to a commercial.
In any case, I have never seen anything like this occur before on Match
Game. I mean, I've seen the audience boo a judge's decision, but nothing
like this. Also, Richard Dawson just really seemed ticked off at the
whole thing. I was just waiting for him to go over and deck the judge. I
just want to gauge the opinons of anybody else who's seen this episode.
Do you think this was all a put-on by Richard or was it a prime example of
the tempermental behavior that alienated him from most of the MG staff
near the end of his stay on the show? Finally to the a.t.g-s-ers out
there, what's your take on the judge's decision? It is kinda unfair for
"Scuba Diving School" to slide by while "Finishing School" doesn't.

Well, we all have to remember that watching these Match Games, Richard
is very irritable, and very unfriendly to the camera at this point in
the Match Game Series...
I personally think that the judge HAD to allow the answer "Finishing
School" if he allowed college... simply because it has the exact word
she said...
College would not be (in my opinion) a match if Finishing, and all the
other schools were not a match.
I say we have a rematch! This could be the first game of the new match
game series!

That whole thing was really weird,
I mean College was accepted but not SCHOOL because it said finishing or
scuba?
I think the guy would have won the game if they would have accepted that.
the judge must have been sniffing freon or something.
as far as richard, i really cant stand him, he really
has an attidue on MatchGame, and i think he plunged Family Feud right into
cancellation when they brought him back in '94 or whenever that
was. he seemed grouchy and he could hardly talk.
what was the reasoning behind that? were the ratings going down with ray?
the show had been on quite a while with ray.
anyway,

Lotsa snipping; read the original post.

This sounds like an awkward situation where they should have stopped tape,
made a decision, and told the contestants they'd both come back, no matter
what the outcome (and never rerun it on GSN). I would think "college"
wouldn't be accepted but "finishing school" and "scuba diving school"
would -- they're more descriptive forms of the answer, but they contain
the word. Badly written question; perhaps the judges should have decided
what they wanted to do before it was read -- or would Standards &
Practices have disapproved of this?
Later in a response post, Ed Walker writes:

The ratings were going down, and Ray was beginning to bug Jonathan Goodson
as much as Richard had bothered his father. J. Goodson was looking for a
ratings jolt, I think... but negated it by putting Dawson in that awful
new set. In any case, the program got destroyed by O.J. trial coverage,
although it did manage to limp through the final season. Read all about
it on Chris Lambert's Game Show Page.

I watched this one with my mouth hanging open...I couldn't believe the
riot atmosphere of it all...but I, for one, was in total agreement
with Richard, the rest of the panel and the audience...if Ira was
judging this one, he really blew it...I was very proud of Richard for
making a stink about it...he knew that this ruling was completely
unfair and definitely affected the outcome of the game...even worse,
when the champion got their next question and answered "Lady of the
evening" aka "prostitute", the judge gave Ed Asner a match for "Party
girl"...since when does "party girl" mean prostitute??
I felt so sorry for the guy who lost...he had a look on his face like
he had been hit by a truck...and I kinda feel like he did...but I
strongly suspect that he will be brought back on a future episode...
Jake
I disagree with Joe (Circle gets the square).
I recall a few matches which involved multi-card answers from the celebrity. I
had always thought the rule was that a vague answer could match a celebs
specific answer (i.e. SCHOOL would match celeb's SCUBA DIVING SCHOOL) but a
contestants specific answer could not match a celeb's vague answer (i.e.
HOLLANDAISE SAUCE would *not* match SAUCE -- as seen on MG 7x's
premiere).
Generally, though it worked the other way around....the contestants
usually had the benefit of the doubt. If the contestant was vague and the
celeb was specific, then they gave the benefit to the contestant. If the
contestant was specific, then that was the answer that must match. The
contestants were the ones whom S&P affect....not the celebrities.
