* THE PRICE IS RIGHT: THE PRICING GAMES FROM A TO (ALMOST) Z *
* Number 16 in a series -- collect all 75! *
* Game Name: CLOCK GAME *
* When Played: 1972-present *
* Played for: Basic gameplay has two prizes on the line, but awards *
* can vary by format *
* Staging: Daytime version: Turntable holds game board *
* TNPIR94: Played at video wall: clock was supered onscreen *
* Props: Two price holders Bob Barker uses to check the price of *
* the item *
* Gameplay: Generally, two prizes are presented, and the contestant *
* has thirty seconds to win both. A thirty-second timer similar *
* to the old "Password" lightning round timer (possibly even the *
* same timer?) ticks off the seconds. The contestant gives a bid *
* on the item, and the host will prompt with either "higher" or *
* "lower". The idea is for the player to zero in on the item and *
* bracket it and win as quickly as possible. If the first item is *
* won, a second item is played for. *
* Generally, both prizes are presented in ascending price order *
* and do not exceed $1000 in price. *
* A special rule change occurred when a prize in excess of $1000 *
* was played for: the host gave the thousands bracket, and the *
* player was allowed to bid in hundreds of dollars without having *
* to say the thousands. *
* Game Variations: There are many variations to the basic game that *
* have been used to enhance the game: *
* TNPIR72: Two prizes. If a player finished with two seconds or *
* less left, they won an additional $1000. (Syn) *
* TPIR (1979-80 syn): Three prizes were played for. *
* TPIRS: If both prizes were won, a player chose one of four *
* envelopes for a cash award. Available awards were $1000, $2000, *
* $3000, $5000. *
* TNPIR: Occasionally, two prizes over $1000 were featured in the *
* Clock Game. The thousands bracket rule was used. On later shows *
* if both prizes were won, a bonus prize was added to the *
* player's winnings. *
* Notes: The first game added to the original mix of games. It was *
* a marked improvement over its predecessor, Bullseye I. Still *
* uses its original gameboard from 1972. *
* It's a distince change in that there's a specific skill and *
* logical thought process to playing the game that many players *
* forget when the cameras are rolling and the lights are on. Bob *
* Barker has said many times it's the one game you can win every *
* time you play it no matter what the prizes are. *
* The game was one of three played for a special presentation of *
* TPIR on Vicki Lawrence's now defunct talk show, "Vicki!" During *
* the game, a contestant did something no regular contestant has *
* ever done: get the correct price with their first bid. *
* Best lines: One woman won a computer after being confused on the *
* higher/lower cues. When she did win, she told Barker. "I can't *
* even balance my checkbook! What the hell am I gonna do with a *
* computer?" *
* Next: Cover Up *
