But...speaking of Alex Trebek...he hosted Wheel of Fortune for a week in
1980 and hosted one syndicated show from 1996 (Sajak hosted J! that
day).

Also, note that Gene Rayburn hosted Tattletales for a week.

A final note: on a CBS promotion, both Barker and Trebek (have these two
met recently?) met on the Double Dare '76 set and later on the TPIR set.

And Barker has appeared on lots of game shows, but not as host:
Tattletales, Hollywood Squares, Match Game, Family Feud, Beat the Clock,
and many others.

A friend and I were talking about game show hosts recently, and came up with an
amusing notion: recasting hosts for popular game shows past and present. One
was placing Ben Stein in the announcers role on TPiR. Can't you here him
droning, "C'mon down"?

Any other ideas?

How about Rod Roddy uttering "Somewhere, sometime... you could Win
Roddddd Roddddddy's Moneeeeeey (or at least one of my jackets...)

Speaking of Rod Roddy, how many shows *has* he announced for?... from
WHEW! and Hit Man days to now?... just a curious note - possibly to add
to EoTVGS3. Must be no where close to Gene Wood!

Aside from "TPIR" and the ones you mentioned, the only other ones I know of
were "Press Your Luck" and "So You Think You Got Troubles?!"

Not game show, of course, but he was also the narrator on "Soap"--a job that
Casey Kasem was originally signed for--I guess Casey didn't think the show
would fit his image. (Insert famous "AT40" outtake here.)

Peter Baldwin(?) (soap actor) did the pilot for "50 Grand
Slam," but Tom Kennedy hosted the series.

And we can't forget Peter hosting the Monopoly pilot, only
to be replaced by Michael Reilly.

Well this isn't exactly on topic of miscasting, but how about hosts who
did the pilot for a series but not the series itself. Ones that come to
mind:

Face Is Familiar - Jack Clark pilot, Jack Whitaker series

Hollywood Squares - Bert Parks pilot, Peter Marshall series
Who What or Where - Jack Narz pilot, Art James series
Joker's Wild - Allen Ludden pilot, Jack Barry series
Showoffs - Larry Blyden (died before series), Bobby Van series
Catch Phrase - Rick Barry (basketball player) pilot, Art James series
Wordplay - Peter Tomarken pilot (w/Rod Roddy announcing), Tom Kennedy series

I'll add on:

Wheel Of Fortune- Edd (Kookie) Byrnes (Merv said he wasn't chosen because
he didn't know the 5 vowels.

To Tell The Truth ('90) Richard Kline
To Tell The Truth (50's) Mike Wallace (Titled "Nothing But The Truth",
which was changed because some news program had rights to that title)
The New Price is Right ('94) Mark Kriski (who, IMHO, would've done a
better job)
Tattletales('73) Gene Rayburn (Pilot titled "Celebrity Match Mates")
Third Degree- Peter Marshall (who would've gotten the job if Bert hadn't
stepped in and decided to host it himself)
Hollywood Squares - (original) Bert Parks

Actually, Peter lost the job because of contractual difficulties with
the producers; that was when Bert left WLoD to take over as host.

Although Bert did his usual good job of hosting, considering the job
his WLoD replacement Robb Weller did, I think it would have been better
if Peter had come to an agreement with the producers...

That's the game show biz for ya!

How about this one:

WHEEL OF FORTUNE--Ed Byrnes 1st pilot, Chuck Woolery 2nd pilot and series
(until late-1981)
MONOPOLY--Peter Tomarken (pilot), Michael Reilly series.

Actually, Gary Owens hosted the original pilot of "The Gong Show." John
Barbour was hired for the daytime version by Barris, but was fired after the
first taping for being too compassionate to the contestants.

To explain: Barbour was known in L.A. as the acidic film critic at Los Angeles
magazine and KNBC-TV. Barris and NBC thought that Barbour would carry that
acid with him and use it on the contestants. Little did they know that he was
carrying around the idea for a show called "Real People" and would never be
nasty to ordinary folks.

I remember Barbour as the only regular on "The New Liar's Club"
(1988-89). He was quite funny, but definitely not suited to host a show
as outrageous as TGS.

Interesting...I never realized that Barbour was considered to be
edgy--not just from REAL PEOPLE, but from one of his few(only? Was his
GONG SHOW aired?) national TV appearances before that...on the 1973
episode of THE ODD COUPLE where Felix is the unwitting ghost-writer of
Oscar's theater reviews. They end up appearing together on a TV show
where Barbour is the host(and Felix/Oscar provide the acidity).

Never. When "Gong" premiered on June 14, 1976, the host was Chuck Barris.
(Surprise, because TV Guide had touted Barbour as the host. There was even
an ad in the June 12, 1976 TV Guide that had Barbour's picture in it.)
