As a great man once said, "Arlene, you're terrific."

Rest in peace, Arlene. We will miss you.

Undoubtedly, you think of the classic G-T panel shows, and how they were
described: "funny", "bright", "witty", "sophisticated", "smart"...you'd use
the
same adjectives to describe Arlene.

She'll be missed.

Another legend leaves us. It would be my hope that GSN, and it seems more
likely they'd mention this with Cronin's penchant for classic TV, would at
least mention Arlene Francis' death during their next Sunday Night classic WML
showing, or if not do a two-show tribute to her.

What I liked about Arlene was that she proved you could be classy and funny at
the same time. I've loved "What's My Line" since I was a little girl and she
was an intregal part of it for almost the entire run (I think she joined on the
second show, IIRC).

I'm sorry to see her go, but I'm sure she'll be warmly received when she enters
and signs in please in heaven.

Wasn't Arlene Francis the last surviving member of the classic What's
My Line panel of the 1950's and 60's? John Daly, Bennett Cert,
Dorothy Kilgallen, Steve Allen are all gone now.

Well, we still have the reruns. Those old What's My Line shows are a
great sourvineer of mid-20th century New York at its peak: theater,
arts, high society, and access to the new medium of television.

Kitty's very much alive. She appeared on an episode of the revival of To Tell

My thoughts and prayers are with the surviving family of Mrs. Francis.

Kitty is still with us, she made a stop on the current To Tell the Truth last fall,
so she is very much alive :-)

The last time I saw Francis was on the "Howard Stern" show several years ago.
She was on with Kitty Carlisle and along with Robin they played a version of
"Who's Got a Secret". They brought out a former beauty pageant contestant and
the panelists had to guess her secret. Well, she was a lesbian (what a
surprise) and at the end, her extremely butch girlfriend came out and began
making out with her. Neither Arlene or Kitty batted an eyelash and when her
secret was revealed, Arlene came back with "(Robin) almost got it right, she
asked her if she was a man." She was great.

Talk about longevity....

Arlene Francis [1907-2001] preceded Dorothy Kilgallen [1913-65], John
Charles Daly [1914-91], Mark Goodson [1915-92], Bill Todman [1918-79], Larry
Blyden [1925-75] and Wally Bruner [1935-91], into this world, and left it
after all of the above did.

I thought about what GSN would do as well...then I heard Hank Ketcham
also died.
My suggestion: find the color "bronzing baby shoes" episode of WML,
and follow it with the TTTT shown not too long ago with Hank Ketcham
at the end (I think it was the one with the "three Santas", two of
which were Rip Taylor and Christopher "Mr. Belvedere" Hewett).

Tony Randall as the guest panelist and Bette Davis as the mystery guest in a

I am very fortunate to have MANY WML episodes in my video collection, and I
also had the WML book by Gil Fates as well where I got to read many interesting
stories about Arlene. Arlene and Bennett Cerf have always been my two favorite
panelists of ANY game show and it NEVER ceases to amaze me the wit, the class,
the sharpness, and the kindness that she showed to the television audience, and
Bennett as well.

I hope that when I get to heaven someday, I will get to see Arlene, Dorothy,
Bennett, and Steve Allen and to personally thank them for the laughter, smiles,

Off topic, but what the heck.

According to this web site, Wednesday (Lisa Loring) is still around:

http://www.biography.com/cgi-bin/frameit.cgi?p=http%3A//www.biography.com/
magazine/biomag/wednesday.html

According to imdb.com, Ken Weatherwax (Pugsley) and Felix Silla (Cousin Itt)
are alive, as well as John Astin.

And to be fair, Blossom Rock would have been 106 this year, Jackie Coogan 87.
The only two cast members who died "ahead of their time" were Ted Cassidy (died
during open heart surgery at age 46) and Carolyn Jones (cancer, age 54).

On the other hand, Bewitched's death toll is fairly lengthy (of course,
Bewitched had a lot more semi-regulars), considering the two shows debuted the
same year.

Elizabeth Montgomery (age 62, colorectal cancer)
Dick York (63, emphysema)
Dick Sargent (64, prostate cancer)
Agnes Moorhead (73, cancer)
David White (74, heart attack)
Mabel Albertson (81, Alzheimer's)
Maurice Evans (87, cancer)
Sandra Gould (82, stroke)
Marion Lorne (80, heart attack)
Paul Lynde (55, cardiac arrest due to "extreme substance abuse")
Alice Pearce (48, cancer)
Roy Roberts (75, heart attack)
Robert F. Simon (83, heart attack)
George Tobias (78, cancer)
Irene Vernon (76, heart attack)

Still alive: Bernard Fox, Erin Murphy, Alice Ghostley, the Lawrence Brothers,
Kasey Rogers.

I stand corrected on Faye Emerson. That would mean three of the major four
female panelists of IGAS are still with us, and both of TTT's regular female

As far as I know it was also called "To Tell The Truth", although they had
planned on calling the show "Nothing But the Truth", but because there was a
movie by that name they had to change the name last minute. (As a matter of

I'll save Eric the effort of answering this one... :^)

The unbroadcast pilot (hosted by Mike Wallace) **and** the first aired
show (hosted by Bud Collyer) were both titled "Nothing but the Truth".
Either the first aired show didn't survive (which seems unlikely), or
GSN hasn't got the rights to air it, as it's never been shown outside of
its original airdate.

GSN's broadcast cycle began with the **second** Collyer show, the first
one that was sporting the new title of "To Tell the Truth".
