Well, here's the recap of my trip to Los Angeles this past
weekend...if anything, for those who aren't familiar with the process
of visiting The Price Is Right, this will give you a little bit of
info...

I arrived at LAX on Saturday and was met by "Plinko Man" Tony
Harrison...we headed to his home, relaxed a bit, played with his kitty
Tigger and then ran around some...then we headed for what would be an
interesting dinner...

We had a wonderful dinner at an Italian place in Marina Del Ray...and
what a motley crew! Tony and I had the honor of meeting or
reacquainting ourselves with (in alphabetical order so NO ONE is
slighted...hehehehe):

Randy Amasia
Chris Clementson
Brian Conn
Brian Hamburg
David Hammett
Carl Knecht
Jade Mills

The dinner was excellent...the service was good (bunches of
actor-wanna-bees)...and lots of great conversation...it's incredible
how many things can be done with the folder that holds the check! :)

On Sunday, Tony and I had the opportunity to visit The Museum Of
Television And Radio...as a non-member, we were each allowed to view
up to 4 episodes of any series in the library during a 2 hour
period...Tony selected a 1976 "Wheel Of Fortune" (grrrrrr...I wanted
to see it!), a 1978 "Hollywood Squares" and a 1982 "Match
Game/Hollywood Squares Hour"...I had the great fortune to see the 1972
2000th episode of the Art Fleming "Jeopardy!", an episode of the Arte
Johnson game "Knockout" (interesting...had never seen it before)...but
the best was having the chance to see BOTH episodes of the ill-fated
Jackie Gleason 1961 game "You're In The Picture"...wow...WHAT A BAD
SHOW!! :) But the wonderful "apology" episode was classic...and it
was nice to see Dennis James doing the commercials for Kelloggs
cereals! :)

ON TO MONDAY...:)

Tony and I arrived at CBS Television City shortly after 4AM and it was
a brisk morning...but I insisted on only wearing my t-shirt with a pic
of Bob Barker from his 1956 premiere on Truth Or
Consequences...luckily, I also had my leather jacket to keep me warm
for a while...amazingly enough, the only people already there were
Brian Hamburg and an older couple...and a phantom blue sweater
stretched across the first section of the contestant bench...even for
4AM, the five of us there were pretty energetic...as the minutes
passes, people slowly started to arrive but not in the numbers that we
expected...anyway, probably around 5:15-5:30AM, Chris Clementson
surprised up by dropping by to wish us luck and bring us some
refreshments...HOW NICE CAN YA GET?? :) After his departure, we
settled in for what would be a nice LONG wait...around 6:30AM, we
finally found who the sweater belonged to...3 people walked up and
expected to be first in line...well, we just weren't going to have
that but rather than have any dispute over it, we let the CBS pages
handle it...since having 3 people in front of us didn't really matter,
we decided to let them have the seats...and that was when it was
discovered that they didn't even have tickets to the show...and were
told to then get stand-by tickets and go to the end of the
line...moral of the story? GET YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE!!

While you wait in this line, you meet many people of every age, shape,
size, color, nationality and any other difference you can think
of...but they are all happy and ready to have fun...the one person who
stands out most to us (and you'll see why later) was #6 in line...his
name was Larry Looney...he was a local man who had visited TPiR
several times and I believe he said this was his 6th visit
(hmmmm...sixth visit...sixth in line...hmmmm...coincidence?) He was
very friendly and we all chatted and had a great time...finally, at
nearly 7:30AM, the adrenaline really started to flow...the true
process was about to begin...

The CBS pages came out and briefly explained the first part of the
process to us...each person was given a handwritten number on their
ticket to designate their place in line...once this number was
received, we were free to leave the studio lot, have breakfast and
return to the studio lot by 9:30AM SHARP...Tony, Brian and myself had
breakfast at Canters, which I believe must be legendary, but it's also
the place where Tony had breakfast before his own Plinko win in
1997...his waitress told Brian and I that she felt that he and I would
be lucky today (uh-huh)...we enjoyed a nice leisurely breakfast and
many laughs but made sure we met the 9:30AM deadline...

When you return at 9:30, you are then seated on a new set of benches
on the other side of the building...there are 2 lines of
benches...seats 1-150 and 151-330 (I believe)...we had the honor of
taking seats 1, 2 & 3 and we fortunate to have some really nice people
sitting in seats 151-154...we all talked for ages...it made me feel
good when the young girl (22 yrs old) said that she really hoped I
made it up there...being as hyper as I was, I think EVERYONE there at
CBS knew how much I wanted to be on the show...well, before too long,
the pages then came by an exchanged our handwritten numbers with
official TPiR line numbers...I felt honored to be holding the #1 for
my first appearance...then we were given our coveted TPiR
nametags...also, we received post cards with Bob's pic on them so we
could write down our show's air date and mail it to the person of our
choice, compliments of CBS! Well, as you can imagine, even in spite
of the excitement, the wait is long...finally, at roughly
11:30AM-noon, the biggest step of the process was here...it was our
chance to meet producer Phil Wayne Rossi and hopefully impress him
enough to be chosen as a contestant for the show...we were taken to
him in roughly groups of 15 people...Phil calls your name and you have
a few precious seconds to sell yourself...I, as the number one person,
had NO idea what to expect and I'm afraid he caught me a little
off-guard...as I walked away from my interview, I knew that my chances
of being chosen weren't that great...but who knows, right? Anyway,
once you have been interviewed, you then go through CBS security where
you must step through a metal detector and they then ask you to check
in any recording devices, cameras, pagers, cell phones, beeping
watches and any other mechanical device that could disrupt the taping
of the show...from security, you are then sent to sit on yet another
set of benches, but this time, in total silence...since you are still
near the area where the interviews are taking place, you are expected
to be totally quiet as not to disrupt the remaining interviews...trust
me...at this point, silence is VERY difficult...you realize that you
now may be chosen as a contestant and your next step is to be taken
into the studio...your energy is at a high but you have to save it...

At approx. 12:45PM, we were escorted into the studio...wow...my first
view of the studio was wild...my first comment was "Gee...IT'S
SMALL!"...trust me...the set and the audience looks MUCH bigger on
TV...as being the first 3 in line, we got the best seats in the
house...if you are looking at contestant's row from the stage (as you
see it on TV), we got the 3 FRONT-ROW seats on the aisle to the right
of the bidders...we then had a great view of the set, plus we were in
a great spot to yell our suggestions!

At approx. 1:05PM, Rod Roddy comes out and starts his warmup...which
was VERY funny and entertaining...he really knows how to work up an
audience...he gets us fully prepared for what we are about to see and
it just gets you worked up into a frenzy...I had goosebumps!

Finally...it was 1:15PM...show time...the applause light comes on and
Rod gives the air date for that taping's slate and you know that you
are about to have one of the greatest experiences of your life...

LIGHTS

MUSIC

HERE IT COMES!!!!!

Well, the first 4 contestants are called from the audience...our
friend from line, Larry, was FINALLY called 3rd...wow...what
energy...what excitement!! But that was NOTHING compared to the
energy when you hear that name...

BOB BARKER!!!!!!!

We lept to our feet as that door opens and that legendary man steps
out onto that stage...no matter what you may think sitting at home, it
is an awesome feeling to be standing there before this man...I was
cheering and yelling and clapping with all I had...as Bob approaches
us, I realize he isn't looking at the first 4 contestants...he isn't
looking at the rest of the audience...he has caught my t-shirt in his
line of vision and he glows!! I get a very subtle acknowledgement
from him, which just makes me cheer even louder...I was so proud and
happy at that moment...as hard as it was to do, we all settled down so
Bob could start the show...

Unfortunately, the first pricing game, "Credit Card", was lost...but
it was the fault of the contestant, not the audience...we tried our
best to scream the correct 3 prizes to him but he didn't listen...not
the best way to start a show but what can you do?

Along comes the 2nd item up for bids...it's a crystal chandelier...we
all knew the price and were screaming it to the top of our lungs and
yelling for Larry to use it...finally, he turned to us and gave our
bid...we applauded wildly and KNEW he was going to get up
there...well, Bob reads the ARP and LARRY WAS THE WINNER!!!
Poor Larry was either too shocked or something because he just stood
there...we started yelling, "LARRY!!! IT'S YOU!!! GET UP THERE!!!"
As Larry made his way to the steps, he stopped to high-five us and
thank us for our help...I don't think the 3 of us could have been any
happier even if it had been us up there...Larry was then given the
chance to win a beautiful newly-styled computer roll-top desk plus a
computer to go with it...to win this prize, he had to play "Freeze
Frame"...granted, it's not the toughest game to play but Larry wasn't
taking any chances, he looked right to Tony, Brian and I to get his
answer...and we couldn't have been any happier to give it to him...we
yelled with all our might and he again used our answer...AND HE WON
AGAIN!!! We lept to our feet again in extreme joy...here we
were...had never met this man before today but we felt so wonderful to
think that just maybe we had helped him make his mark on TPiR...as he
came down the steps during the commercial, he stopped to thank us for
our help and I tell you, I was so happy for the man that I almost
cried...unfortunately, the "Showcase Showdown" came along and Larry
just barely lost it...but what a day he had already had...and I think
he was perfectly happy with the outcome...

During one of the commercial breaks (some of the specifics I have
trouble recalling because of all the excitement), I had a great
honor...Bob took some time to talk about my t-shirt...he liked it so
much, he asked that I stand up and show it to the rest of the
audience...I felt so great at that moment...I might not have been on
TV then or been in contestants row, but Bob allowed me to face my
peers in the audience and I beamed proudly!!!

The rest of the show was lots of fun as well...great prizes, fun games
and exciting showcases (okay, the prizes weren't so great but it was
exciting anyway)...it was sad to see the show end but that sure didn't
stop us from cheering while the prize plugs rolled at the end...after
the show, Bob comes back out and thanks us for coming...as you can
guess, neither Brian or I were called to play...but I don't think
either of us were that disappointed...we had watched a great show and
had helped make Larry a happy man...then it happened...

Right before they were ready to give the door prize, Rod Roddy
announced that "the impossible has happened"...there were actually
still seats available for the 2nd taping...Brian and I ran like mad
out of the studio to get in line again!! We luckily got to bypass
part of the process but we still had a 2 hour wait ahead of us before
the 4:30 taping...since we've gone through the procedure, I won't bore
you with it again...but I will say that I thought both Brian and I had
done much better with our interviews this time BUT instead of being
numbers #1 and #3, we were numbers #301 & #302...not so good...

Well, the show started again as it had before...what had been an
entirely entertaining warmup by Rod previously kinda disappointed me
when I realized it was totally memorized word for word and that kinda
took the fun and spontanaiety (?) out of it for me...well, the music
starts, the first 4 contestants come down and the energy when Bob came
out was there all over again! The game itself was fun...since we
hadn't spent as much time with this 2nd group, we didn't know anyone
who played...

Right before the showcase, Bob was finally talked into autographing
someone's t-shirt...and then a second and then a third...I did my best
to get his attention since I knew he liked my shirt so much in the
first taping...and I got his attention...but he then turned his back
on me and went on...I can't deny that I was devastated...I couldn't
believe that he would make such a big deal about my shirt but not
autograph it but would autograph others...from that moment on, (call
me petty) I'm afraid that my TPiR experience for the day had been
ruined...one of my all-time idols had dismissed me like I wasn't even
there...I just kinda sat through the showcase, feeling a little
numb...as soon as the show was over, I was glad to leave the
studio...I am sure that a lot of my feelings of disappointment were
due to fatigue and such (since we had already been at CBS for over 14
hours) but it sure hurt at the time...

I returned to Dallas this morning, still feeling kinda low but telling
myself that I would return to try again because I knew that I'd have
my chance one day...

Please let me take a second to thank a couple of people...first, Tony
"Plinko Man" Harrison for being a wonderful host to me on this
trip...I couldn't have done it without him and he proved to be a
really great guy...and let me also thank Brian Hamburg, who I proudly
call one of my new friends and hopefully one of my new best
friends...anyone who hasn't had the chance to meet Brian, you don't
know what you are missing...if I ever needed a reason to move to Los
Angeles, Brian is it...

Thanks for reading my babble...:)

Jake, I don't think anyone else could have given a more colorful and
insightful description of what happens at a TPIR taping, but you didn't
tell us the most important detail....... when the show(s) will air.

Yeah. This is one reason why Johnny is missed so much. His warmups were
different, and more spontaneous.

I got his attention...but he then turned his back

That's too bad. I don't think Bob meant to ignore you, perhaps he was
preoccupied with the taping of the show.

I can virtually guarantee that the museum would not allow copying of
any of their material...but it sure would be nice! In the meantime,
what more would you like to know about these shows?

I wish that were the case but Bob had just finished signing the last
t-shirt 3 seconds or so before...and you can ask Brian...he clearly
saw me and acknowledged me...he just chose to go on without signing my
shirt...and he still had time to do it...rather than sign my shirt, he
went back to Q&A from the audience, answering similar lame questions
that were asked during earlier commercial breaks...

Oh, well...story of my life...

I tell ya guys.. between Jake, Brian, and myself, we kicked ass on the bids
:). After the show, the quote from Larry I remember best is "I still don't
know what I'm gonna do with a $2000 chandelier" :) but he was thrilled with
the prizes he won, and I know he made quite an impression on all of us.

Jake, way to go bud! Just remember, Bob has a lot of things going on in
his mind and you shouldn't take this personally. Your enthusiastic,
warm, grateful account of the weekend and taping was just great -- I
lapped up every word of it. I even scrolled down line by line, the
better to preserve any surprise to be found in the text, like you being
called as a contestant perhaps.

Tis so, I work at the museum of tv and radio, and since we don't actually
have the rights to any of our shows, we can't allow copies to be made.
But, trust me, that Match/Squares show is *really* horrible, so you're not
missing much.

Never mind the garlic rolls...All I remember about the C & O was that
they liked singing game show themes. Unfortunately, the only theme they
sang that night last year was "That's Amore". I was hoping the C & O
gang would get into a rousing edition of Card Sharks.... :-)

And then there was our waitress (whose name escapes me), who could have
been the West Coast version of a certain Perkins waitress (whose name
also escapes me as well), from GSC7.

The Museum in New York says that you can have a copy of anything in
their collection, provided you have the permission of the copyright
holder. I have a friend who got a letter from Ralph Andrews personally
allowing him to have a tape of an episode of YOU DON'T SAY! in their
library.
Unfortunately, the Musuem charges $750 for the privilege. So, if the
UCLA archives ever get their stuff on a current format, their $75 an
hour price is a comparative steal.

If that's the case, you should've been at Jade's victory
celebration for his Pictionary appearance -- Solboy asked
the mariachis (in Spanish!) if they knew the CS theme, and
when they didn't, he offered to teach it to them.

(Alas, they averred, but they offered up a song about a
man-eating shark, despite Aaron's observation that he didn't
think it was appropriate dinner music.)

>And then there was our waitress (whose name escapes me),
who could have
>been the West Coast version of a certain Perkins waitress
(whose name
>also escapes me as well), from GSC7.

(To the tune of "Copacabana":)

"Her name was Lena
She was a waitress
She worked at Perkins Bakery out in Hummels Wharf, P-A
She took our orders
And brought them over
But there was something in her manner that young Rich could
not ignore
And then the comments flew
Double entedrees, ooh!
She was embarassed out of her mind by young Richard, ooh!

At the Perkins
Right next to Wendy's..."

(Sorry, I can't remember how the rest of the melody goes...)

Hey Jake,

Sounds like a cool time... Good detailed account...

Don't feel bad.. The 1st time I went to Price is Right, we got there at like
4:30am, and were almost the last people to get in (I was with some less than
game show friendly people!) and then when we did we were crammed all the
away against the CBS curtains (on the side opposite of rod).. It was a bit
disappointing after waiting to see the show all my life.. but.. there was
always next time which led to plenty more<grin>

I hope I can meet the L.A. gang when I show up at the end of next month
(hint: anyone interested?)<grin>
