Both of these emcees had the ability to indulge in comedic
repartee while not losing control of the game situation. In
other words, they each possessed likeability and a good
sense of humor, along with a sense of pacing that didn't
permit the goofiness to run roughshod over the game
itself. At least, that's how I've always viewed them.
On the flip side of the coin, there are hosts that turn off
the viewer through the sheer force of personality (or lack
thereof). I've had conversations with folks who swear that
Allen Ludden was as bland and uninteresting as a shoelace.
I don't agree with that assessment, although I can under-
stand their viewpoint. (Besides, anybody married to the
lovely and talented Betty White HAS to have something
going for him in the personality department. I know he
wasn't all THAT rich).
As far as I'm concerned, the poster boy of bad hosts
would be someone like Wink Martindale. Not only did
he have a very insincere smile (again, in my opinion),
but I found him to be exceedingly slow-witted. (Some
would say stoopid, but not I). Yes, old Wink is likely a
nice guy and all, but any time I saw him on a game
show, I'd inevitably find myself becoming irritated
with his clueless style. Anybody else concur with
this? Who would be your candidates for best and
worst hosts and why?
= R =
This one is easy!!! These are people from Nickelodeon game shows that have
been the worst hosts ever!
Wesley Eure-Finders Keepers-He always seems like he has no idea how to play the
game, he tells the worst kiddie jokes in the book, and you can always tell he
is thinking of what to say next
Skip Lackey-Think Fast-Umm ahh emmm BLUE TEAM GETS THE POINTS!!! (Everyone
screams). He was a great host for a kids show, but he everything he said was
not left without a "ummm ahh, stutter, stutter" Also, he always forgot they
played for dollars, not points! GEEZ!
Robb Edward Morris-Make The Grade-He is the most blaaa host I have ever seen
for a kids game show. Lew Schneider quit, and they got a guy who tried to act
like him, DIDN'T WORK!!
Michael Carrington-Think Fast-Much better than Skip, but he still wasn't fit
for that job.
*FACT-Carrington announced on the CBS late night game show A Perfect Score.
GOOD NICKELODEON HOSTS:
Mike O'Malley
Lew Schneider
MARC SUMMERS-Best of the best
Larry Toffler
Phil Moore

You forgot one big one. Kirk Fogg, from Legends of the Hidden Temple. He
couldn't even read the teleprompter well. And even the worst game show hosts
abandon SOME of a show's gimmicks if there are plenty of them. He didn't.
I would have to say my favorite gameshows host of all time is Bob
Eubanks, because of how he did the 25 point bonus question. I do like
Wink Martindale. I heard a clip of an episode of Joker's Wild with
Jack Barry, and I didn't like him too well. He sounded dperessed.
Did Jack Barry sound so depressed? I would nominate him as the worst
host of all time.
Of course, the good ones are people like Bill Cullen, Tom Kennedy, Bob
Barker, and Gene RAyburn...
I'm surprised no one's mentioned the ABSOLUTE worst host yet, and this
topic already well underway.
Jim Caldwell...
(shudders)
Not long ago there was a discussion of game show hosts and there was
established a "Convy Line," similar to the baseball Mendoza Line, for game
show hosts. The Convy Line separates the good hosts from the bad hosts;
Bert Convy was the Mario Mendoza of the genre -- nobody less talented than
Bert Convy should ever have been given the keys to a game show.
It was also agreed that while Bert Convy was the Mario Mendoza, Bill
Cullen was the Babe Ruth and Jack Barry was the Pete Rose.
Uh, maybe cuz it wasn't Paul Reubens...it was Troy Stevens!!!
Paul Reubens hosting as himself would totally kick ass.
Jamie (what a coincidence), Paul Reuben did an amusing job (at least on the
first show) of playing Troy Stevens. However, when it came to actually carrying
the show, he couldn't do jack. (horrible pun was intended.) I shudder at the
though at Paul Reubens hosting as himself...but that's just me.
How about Chris Harrison?
Is Bob Barker the Joe DiMaggio?
Is Alex Trebek the Ty Cobb?
Is Pat Sajak the Roger Maris?
Is Betty White the Jackie Robinson?
Being Bill has also hosted the most shows, could it be said he was also the
Mark McGwire*?
*or will it be Barry Bonds?
The ONE and ONLY, Brandon Foster-Gray
CAPT. TENNILLE: Simpson, you're like the son I never had.
HOMER: And you're like the father I never visit.
---"Simpson Tide" episode, "The Simpsons," 1998
Having attended the first taping of YDKJ, Paul Reubens hosting as
himself was tolerable, at best.
Lynn Swann is also the Fred Lynn.
Pete Rose played in the most baseball games, but Cullen can't be the Rose.
Berry has to be the Rose, since Rose was accused of rigging games and Berry was
involved in a rigged show.
I also think Barker and DiMaggio is a perfect fit, with one example both
having, or somewhat having, ladies-man reputations.
Maybe Alex Trebek can be the Mickey Mantle, since Mantle was known for drinking
and Trebek is rumored to be a drinker (in at least one oft-told High Rollers
finale tale).
Then again, Cobb was known for being surly and arrogant, and Trebek is
sometimes described as arrogant.
No, Adam Wade was.

I would never have thought of him, but I agree with Chris. Great choice.

Amen to that...he was extremely hyper and a notorious example of why most
actors (save for Blyden, Convy, and maybe a few others) make bad GS hosts.
Chuck Donegan (The Illustrious "Chuckie Baby")
Let's see, who would be my picks for best hosts of all-time? I'd probably
have to say Bill Cullen, Allen Ludden, oh, and Bob Barker has a unique way
of making people funny, of course, that will never be duplicated!
All-time worst hosts? EASY! Two words: Patrick Wayne! GEEZ, I couldn't
stand him! Oh, and another one I can't stand is Anne Robinson...I've
already had my fill of The Weakest Link, thank you very much. Another one
who, while he certainly tried, proved that he was just not quite with it
enough to be a game show host was Jim Caldwell. I like him as a host, but
sometimes I have to laugh at some of his gaffes!
