I'm still hoping to God that it's not true, but if it is I think it would be
nice if we all shared some of our fondest memories of one of the all time
best.

I remember how brilliant and funny he was with Rolanda, a French girl who
didn't understand "a darned word I said". I still laugh at it.

His goofing on the set when the questions wouldn't appear as they should.
(round 1 card won't drop, button doesn't work)

Obviously his interaction with Brett was always great.

And of course, the classic "dimple" blooper.

There's some humor in heaven tonight-

I'll go along with you on the "dimple" blooper. I also loved one that aired
not long ago when there was a young lady that wasn't sure what to say about
herself. Gene started improvising for her: "I'm married to a wonderful
man." She then responded by saying, "Actually, I'm single but I fool around
a lot." This prompted Richard to ask Gene to "give her my card" (which had
"Call Me" written on it.) She was almost too embarrassed to continue.

When something went wrong -- or when someone screwed up -- Gene always took
advantage of it.

Best example, Gene was about to go to the commercial break when he realized
the cue card man "didn't hold up the sign" in time. He then went up to
him, picked up a card and beat him with the card. "Fade to black, roll
tape, go to commercial," Gene commanded.

I wonder if some of the older newsgroup lurkers remember from the "original" NBC Match Game his occasional twitting of
the audience as "little old ladies from Upper Montclair (N.J.)" when doing the Audience Match.

I have a couple of favourite moments with Gene -- one was on "Match
Game--Hollywood Squares Hour" when he went nuts when a player gave a rotten
answer (at least he thought it was), and then that answer matched twice.
Usually, Gene would backtrack and say that the answer was not rotten after
all. This time he didn't. His reply when the question was over: (speaking
to Gallagher) "You have good eyesight! You stole that from [Jon Bauman] or
he stole it from you, because it's impossible that three people could all
think of the same dreadful answer in one program. It can't be done, I tell
you!"

My other was the time on Match Game '7x when he wrestled with the camera
when he was trying to get the producer to change the camera angle.

Gene said something like "You can say "crane operator" from now till Doomsday! I
STILL say it's a rotten answer!"

Charles was "dressing up" as an Indian. He took off his tie and drew a feather
on an answer card, and he wasn't ready. The producer was giving a cue to move on
with the game, and Gene bought Charles more time by wrestling the cameras.

I liked the way Gene used to enter the stage. He did some pretty strange
entrances sometimes. I remember once, after the door slid open, he poked his
head out from behind the wall, looked at the audience, pulled his head back
behind the wall and then walked out.

Also once, I remember Gene running out from offstage and grabbing the set
overhead and swung like a monkey from it.

I think the nipple blooper deserves to go into the blooper hall of fame.
I'm sure it took several minutes for everyone to gather thier composure before
they could continue with the game. The censors were probably having a heart
attack after they got that one. :-)

R.I.P. Gene, we will miss you.
Dan R.

P.S. Thanks to everybody ATGS for posting the news about
Gene. If it wasn't for you guys, I would have never have known.

Here's a funny moment I remember from I think it was Match Game 74. When
one of the contestants one and everyone started kissing each other and
Maclean Stevenson went to kiss Gene and Gene tried to run away. They ran
through the audience all over the set and finally back up to the stage. It
was hilarious.

I remember one week on "Tattletales", Gene guest-hosted because Bert Convy and
his wife were part of the three celebrity couples this week. When Bert and
Gene both walked out, Gene walked directly behind Bert with his head almost
sitting on Bert's shoulder, like some puppy dog following a kid home from
school. I remembered at the time (1976 or so) thinking that was hilarious...

GSN aired that particular episode months ago.
