Merv on Tom Snyder...

For those who stay up well past your bedtime last night 1/13 may have
seen Merv Griffin as a guest on The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder.
Suffice to say, most of the conversation went to talking about his new
Coconut Club at his Beverly Hilton Hotel, but they did get into talking
a bit about game shows.
Tom had been razzing on Merv as to Why on WoF, you keep all your
winnings while on J!, only the winner keeps the $$$. Merv said
originally J! let all players keep their earnings, but nobody would bet
big in Final J!
Then Tom was complaining that people shouldn't win the game in they
don't get the Final J! answer.
All in all, it was an okay interview. I had two chances to get through
on the toll free to talk to Merv (my question was to be his thoughts on
how the Final J! Think Music has been used in everyday language --
Letterman's show played a bit of it during one of the Late Show segments
45 minutes prior to Merv's appearance with TS not knowing Merv was to be
on!!!), however my phone company -- an archaic version of GTE -- likes
to disconnect your call after 20 rings without an answer!!!!
But then again, only 2 callers got to talk to Merv. :-(

i saw him it was great.
he created Jeopardy and wrote the music and Wheel and wrote the music.
he has to be the greatest creator of games than anyone else cause the paper
today said they have been on at nite for over 15 years and are still number 1
and 2 in the syndicated ratings for all that time.

time, the holy trinity of game shows if you will.
FIRST he created the original version of The Price is Right, the LONGEST
running game show of all time, then he created Password, the seconf greatest

The first game to have celebrity/ cilivan partners and the first bonus
round/endgame, THEN after Mark Goodson refused to
acknolege <sp> his creativity <his second big mistake, Stick arounf if you want
to find out what his first mistake was.> He left and created the THIRD best
game show and the BEST WORD
based game show and the game show with the BEST and MOST
EXCITING end game of them all, PYRAMID.
Know you know why Bob Stewart is the best game show creator of all time .

but certainly nowhere near the success of WOF AND jeopardy. tHEY HAVE TRIED
PILOTS AND PRESELLS OF "pRICE" NOW ABOUT 3 TIMES AND NOBODY TAKES IT FOR
PRIMETIME ACCESS SLOTS. yOU'RE ALSO FORGETTING OTHER EVEN GREATER G-T
PRODUCTIONS THAT MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN STEWARTS. I.E. WHAT'S MY LINE' TO TELL
THE TRUTH' THE GARY M,OORE GAME SHOW ETC. MARK GOODSEN WAS NO SLOUCH IN GAME
SHOW FORMATS. HE WAS ALSO A GIANT OF A CREATOR WHJO CONSTANTLY WORKED THE
FORMATS WITH STEWART. I WORKED AT G-T IN THOSE DAYS AND YOU'RE OUT OF WHACK
WITH THE GENIUS OF STEWART.
NO SHOWS IN THE HISTORY OF TV HAVE THE LEGEND BOTH WHEEL AND JEOPARDY HAVE IN
RATINGS AND REVENUES. THOSE TWO SHOWS ARE WAY OVER 3 BILLION DOLLARS IN SALES
AND HAVE BEEN ON THE AIR A LONG TOME. THE WHEEL IS ABOUT 33 YEARS WITH DAYTIME
AND NIGHTIME. JEOPARDY DURING IN ART FLEMINGS TIME WAS ON 11 YEARS DAYTIME AND
NOW 15 YEARS IN PRIME TIME. THEY STILL HAVE RATINGS IN DOUBLE NUMBERS.
I THINK WE FORGET MERV CREATED AND PRODUCED "DANCE fEVER" NIGHTTIME FOR 12
YEARS AND HIS SHOW 23 YEARS PLUS MANY OTHER GAME SHOWS HE PRODUCED INCLUDING
THE NEW CLICK. STEWART IS SMALL POTATOES IN THAT COMPANY

Actually, Bob Stewart also created TO TELL THE TRUTH, and I'VE GOT A
SECRET, the Garry Moore game show, by Howard Merrill and Allan
Sherman(Sherman is better known for his hit comedy albums from the
1960s, featuring the song "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh"). And even WHAT'S
MY LINE's beginnings come from an early G-T employee named Bob Bach.
His pastime of trying to guess the occupations of people was developed
by Goodson and Todman into the show we know.
I think we can safely saw that Goodson and Todman needed people who
might have a great idea to begin with, but they could certainly do
whatever it took to turn it into a successful TV show.

For those who saw Bob Stewart on GAME TV last year, it's clear that he
is in no condition to do anything in the game show field...and
although you express such disdain for GSN, you never seem to insult
Bob Stewart for selling to Sony in the similar vein that you attack
Jonathan Goodson for selling to All-American...hypocritical?
