JEOPARDY! Stat Sheet
Last Revised: 13 August 1996
Compiled by Brian Dominy (pin...@gate.net)

INTRODUCTION

This is a collection of statistical data collected over many years of
watching the current, syndicated version of "Jeopardy!" In most cases
the
data collected is guaranteed to be correct, but there is no way I can
be
sure about everything. If you have any additional information you
would
like added to this list, or you have evidence to contradict any of the
data, please contact me and let me know so that I can make these stats
as
accurate and complete as possible. (I'm also good at making typos;
those
count, too.)

This is NOT a so-called "FAQ" for the show, as this document is already
large enough and another separate document would suit that better.
Perhaps, if I get time, that will be the next project. This is NOT
leisurely reading material, either; it is a dry reference of more than
a decade of the best "Jeopardy!" players and their games.

Many of the sections below are incomplete so anything that you can add
would be appreciated. Some sections are incomplete for now but are
"in progress". Note that my email address has changed; please send
mail
to pin...@gate.net from now on.

The information in this stat sheet is updated at the conclusion of each

major tournament. This version contains all totals as of the 1996
International Tournament. The next update is planned for November,
1996 during the 12th Tournament of Champions.

All contributors will be given credit in future editions of this stat
sheet.

CREDITS

Thanks to David Hammett and Robert Slaven for suggestions in the first
version of the stat sheet.

Thanks to Robert Slaven for an explanation of how the contestants
for the 10th Anniversary Tournament were chosen.

And thanks to the many former Jeopardy! champions who have posted to
alt.tv.game-shows and/or sent me mail over the years describing their
experiences.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

The format of this stat sheet is pretty straightforward. In Section A,

the names of all Tournament of Champions! participants have been
listed,
with a little bit of information about them obtained from their TOC
tapings.
In Sections B-E, you get detailed data on each of the four major
tournaments
each year: the TOC, the Teen T., the College T., and the Seniors T.
Sections F-H are devoted to three special tournaments, Super Jeopardy!,
the 10th Anniversary Tournament, and the International Tournament.
Finally,
Section I. lists all of the TOC participants and their winnings ranked
in various ways. (This information, of course, is always changing.)

You can use the search capabilities of your mail reader or document
browser to go to a particular section. Just search for the section
letter
and number, followed by a period, at the beginning of a line.

A. The Players

This is a list of all competitors in each year's "Tournament of
Champions",
grouped according to season/tournament. Until 1994, the TOC was held
in
November of each year, and the qualification period was the entire
previous
season. Now it seems that a player can qualify for the TOC up until
the
tournament is held.

One slight problem is that I didn't start keeping records until the
third
season began in 1986, meaning I missed all of the first Tournament of
Champions. I have limited information on that tournament but very
little.
Help here would be very welcome.

If you have any extra details on any of these players that you would
like
to share, please let me know. Also, if you ARE any of these players,
I'd
love to talk with you, and your e-mail address will be kept private if
you
so desire, or publicized here for the world to see (again) if you want
that instead.

Tournament of Champions competitors include all five-game winners, all
special tournament winners (teens, college students, and seniors), and
the
highest winning four-game winners to round out each year's group of 15.

Only once has a three-game winner made it to the tournament: season 9's

David Tiemann.

This section is more of an introduction to the players than it is a
statistical junkyard. I've listed each player, the original winnings
before entering the Tournament of Champions, and the
occupation/hometown
bit announced during their tournament appearance. Many of these people

have gone on to other things and other places now, and some of them
even
drop by on the Internet occasionally to talk about their experiences.
For
more detailed stats on each player, check out the current rankings
given at
the end of this stat sheet in section I.

B. The Tournaments of Champions

The next few sections list all the Jeopardy! tournaments that have been

held, including the Tournaments of Champions, the Teen Tournaments, the

Seniors Tournaments, the College Tournaments, the 10th Anniversary
Tournament, and Super Jeopardy! Note that as of late my interest in
some
of the tournaments has dwindled (except for the TOC), so some of the
information is lacking.

For all sections, the scores of most matches are given as three
figures:
the score going into Final Jeopardy!, the signed Final Jeopardy! wager
indicating money gained or lost during Final Jeopardy!, and the final
score.

For some matches, there is an additional figure given first followed by

a comma; this is the player's score at the end of the Jeopardy! round.

For two-day total-point matches, each day's score is listed on a
separate line, with the two-day total listed last.

In some cases, exact figures were not available, so I have just
indicated
the winner of the match by (WIN). The wild card participants of each
tournament are identified in the quarterfinal listings by (WC).

The Tournament of Champions is held each November featuring all the
previous season's five-time winners, the special tournament winners,
and
the highest four-time winners to round out the field of 15. First
place
pays out $100,000.

Since all of these players have already been mentioned in the previous
section, only last names are given here.

and Bruce appeared on Super Jeopardy!; Jerry did not.

C. The Teen Tournaments

The first Teen Tournament was held in February, 1987, and has been held
in
that month every year since. The format is the same as that of the
Tournament of Champions, except that each winner is guaranteed a
minimum
of $25,000, or his two-day total in the finals if that exceeds the
minimum.

To qualify for this tournament, you must be between the ages of 13 and
17.

D. The Seniors Tournaments

The same year the Teen T. debuted, so did this one. I believe it
originally aired in April that year, but now the tournament is aired at
the
end of the regular season in June/July. (It is the only tournament not
to
be repeated during the summer months.) The same rules given above for
the
Teen Tournament apply here.

The 1996 Seniors Tournament was backed up to December 1995 in order to
make way for the International Tournament to be aired on account of the
1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

To qualify for this tournament, you must be age 50 or older.

Unfortunately, I lost interest in this tournament pretty quickly,
so I stopped watching it altogether. If anyone has the information,
I'll be glad to include it here. I've listed the winners of each
of the tournaments below instead.

D1. 1987 Seniors Tournament
Zeke Sevilla, Jr., $25,000
D2. 1988 Seniors Tournament
Peggy Kennedy, $25,000
D3. 1989 Seniors Tournament
Ouida Rellstab, $25,000
D4. 1990 Seniors Tournament
George Sewell, $25,000
D5. 1991 Seniors Tournament
Lou Pryor, $26,601
D6. 1992 Seniors Tournament
Leonard Schmidt, $25,000
D7. 1993 Seniors Tournament
Marilyn Kneeland, $25,000
D8. 1994 Seniors Tournament
Bart Thomas, $25,000
D9. 1995 Seniors Tournament
Aaron Klein, $25,000
D10. 1995-96 Seniors Tournament
David Cuneo, $28,000

E. The College Tournaments

Two years after the Teen and Seniors tournaments were introduced, this
one
was added. It originally aired at the end of the season, but switched
places with the Seniors tournament sometime a few years ago and now
shows
in April.

I'm not certain on all the qualifications for this one, but I think you

have to be a full-time undergraduate student at a college or university
and
at least 18 years of age.

F. The 1990 Super Jeopardy! Tournament

This tournament was a 13-week affair broadcast Saturdays at 8pm on ABC
during the summer of 1990. It featured 36 former players, all of whom
reached at least the semifinals of the TOC, or who were top players
from
the previous season (who had not yet been in a TOC). Also one
participant,
Burns Cameron, was a contestant from the original Jeopardy! back in
1966.
(Note that this was very early during the run of that particular
version
of the show.)

There were 9 quarterfinals of 4 players each; these produced 9 winners
that
moved on to the semifinals, where 3 finalists were determined.
Quarterfinalists received $5,000; semifinalists won $10,000; third
place
won $25,000; second place won $50,000; and first place won $250,000.

Also, none of the games were played using dollar amounts but instead
points. Round one points ranged from 200-1000, and round two points
ranged
from 500-2500. Eliminating the dollar values really just confused
Alex,
and the score inflation didn't seem to have any effects other than to
make the players look better on the surface and make the first round
completely meaningless.

This was a special one-week tournament commemorating the 10th

other reps were chosen randomly, all of them at least semifinalists

H. The 1996 International Tournament

In honor of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, an International
Tournament was held during the week preceeding the opening ceremonies.
On Monday through Wednesday, three semifinal games were played, with
the losers receiving $5,000 each; and the three finalists returned on
Thursday to play for the championship and $25,000. A regular-season
game was played on Friday, the day the Games began. The nine
contestants
represented nine different countries each with their own version of
"Jeopardy!", including the U.S., represented by the most recent TOC
winner Ryan Holznagel.

I. Current Rankings

The following lists are of all known Tournament of Champions
participants,
ranked according to various winnings.

For the regular winnings, only winnings during a contestant's regular
competitions are included. Teen, College, and Seniors tournament
participants listed here are sorted by their tournament winnings.

For the syndicated winnings, Tournament of Champions winnings have been

added. Although the 10th Anniversary Tournament was also syndicated, I

have excluded those winnings from this list because the method used to
select those contestants involved a high degree of randomness, and I
also didn't include Ryan Holznagel's International Tournament
appearance
here, either.

For the total winnings, 10th Anniversary winnings and Super Jeopardy!
winnings have been included with the above; this includes everything
but
the parting gifts and the taxes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
H1. Regular Winnings

Note that there is one less name here than in the other lists, because
I do not have the regular winnings for the first Tournament of
Champions
winner, Jerry Frankel.

A person's name is not added to this list until he/she has qualified
for the Tournament of Champions. Teen, College, and Seniors champs are
usually added immediately; 5-time champions I happen to see are added;
most of the changes are made when the TOC airs, though.
