For 20 years, I've wanted a clean, announcer-free copy of the theme from the
Break the Bank shows of 1976-77. NOW I HAVE IT!

It's at www.webhangers.com/~tvthemes/

And now, two final words: THANKS, BRIAN!!!!!!

Their company, King World, also has syndicated 3 other Griffin shows:
_Jeopardy!_, _Headline_Chasers_ and _Monopoly_.

Their dad, Charlie King, started King World in the 1960s by selling
"Our Gang" shorts to local TV stations under a different title,
"The Little Rascals". The whole story is in the December 1986 issue of
TV Game $how magazine.

And as Jim Perry would say, talking about the Little Rascals...

Jake Tanner and I had a brief email discussion recently, relating to the
cancellation of _Wheel_2000_. He doesn't believe that Patty Maloney, a
blond, hazel-eyed midget, is qualified to be the host of _JEP!_, despite
her role as Darla Hood in the animated _Little_Rascals_ of 1982-84. Here,
for the group in general, is a list of male cartoon voice actors who have
also been game show hosts:

Arte Johnson ("Misterjaw" on the 90-minute Pink Panther show): _Knockout_
Gary Owens (the original Space Ghost): _The_Gong_Show_ and
_Letters_to_Laugh-In_
Fred Travalena (Bogey Orangutan of _Shirt_Tales_): _Baby_Races_ and
_Anything_for_Money_
Paul Winchell (Dick Dastardly of _Wacky_Races_): _Runaround_

Note that _Runaround_ was a *children's* game show. If these four have done
it, why can't Patty?

In response to Mike Dudas' reply to my announcement of the availability of the
Break the Bank theme on 1-10-98:

Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did when I finally got it this morning -- of
course, my announcement was my own sneaky way of telling everyone at a.t.g.s.
that Brian Karimzad's 80's TV Theme SuperSite is back up at its new home.

It was the mono version, of course, that I downloaded this morning, since I was
at my mother's and using my brother's Laser 486 computer. I had the stereo
version (from the SuperSite's former location) on my own computer (an IBM
Aptiva 530 with an Evergreen 586-133 upgrade processor) but that one wouldn't
play on that computer, much less on my brother's. However, I have since
upgraded the RealAudio player on my computer (from version 4.01 to version
5.0), so I'll try the stereo version again on my computer during this coming
week.

BTW, while you are getting set to link this theme to your Break the Bank
webpage (which I also enjoy immensely), you might add this little bit of
trivia: Many of us on a.t.g.s. know that the same theme music was also used on
Barry-Enright's Joker's Wild Million-Dollar Charity Tournament that aired in
November of 1980, but the theme was also used for a syndicated show that was
produced by two men named Mike and Roger, who had previously worked for Colbert
Television Sales, the company that distributed the syndicated versions of Break
the Bank, Joker's Wild, and Tic-Tac-Dough.

The show was an "info-tainment" program called Soapworld, and it was a ratings
disaster for Mike and Roger, who lost $750,000 on it during the program's
one-season run. They then made the incredible decision to try syndicating a
game show in 1983, at a time when game shows in prime-time access were losing
out to other "info-tainment" shows such as Entertainment Tonight, PM Magazine,
and The People's Court.

Since Jamie Farr was a fill-in host on Wordplay, lets throw him into the
deck as well -- he was the voice of Inch High, Private Eye on the
cartoon series of the same name, seen occasionally on Cartoon Network.

And as far as female voices go, Louise DuArt from Rodeo Drive has also
done several cartoon voices in the past as well as being the "biker
chick" character in the group known as Captain Kool & the Kongs on
Saturday Morning's Krofft Supershow on ABC in the 70s.

Lennie Weinrib, alive and well and living in Chile, was the voice of Inch
High, Private Eye.

And former LMaD announcer Brian Cummings has done numerous voice-over
work for various cartoon shows, including "The Snorks", "2 Stupid Dogs",
and others.

In case you didn't know, Patty was also the "token" for the original
Monopoly pilot. She was dressed up as Rich Uncle Pennybags, and when
the dice were rolled, she moved to the appropriate space on the giant
board.

Ignoring for the moment the premise that being a cartoon voice artist
qualifies one to host a game show (the logic of which escapes me), the
fact is that all four of these hosts had other careers prior to their
being cartoon voices. Johnson was a comic actor in an era when game show
producers were looking to comedy talent for hosts; Owens was a long-time
radio personality whose work on "Laugh-In" (like Johnson) made him a
national "name"; Travalena was (and still is) one of the best impressionists
of the day; Winchell was a favorite childrens' show performer in the '50s
and '60s.

In essence, each was at the time a fairly recognizable figure who could draw
an audience to a TV show. (Even John and Greg Rice, the only "little people"
to host a national game show were celebrities at the time, thanks to their
appearances on "Real People", a major hit in its day.)

Not to take anything away from Patty Maloney, but she would be little more
than a novelty selection, and since "Jep!" is probably supposed to be taken
more seriously that "That @#!* Quiz Show" was, would probably prove to be a
distraction to viewers more than anything else. I, for one, would love to
see a differently-abled person succeed in a field as unexpected as game show
hosting (and if Ms. Maloney is qualified for the job, I would applaud the
executives bold enough to hire her) but I've never seen anything that
hints that this would be a wise move in this case. (Much as I admire the
work of the late Mel Blanc -- the dean of cartoon voice artists -- I don't
think he would have been a good game show host either.)

Unfortunately, the stereo version of the Break the Bank theme still wouldn't
play on this computer -- I was hoping the 5.0 version of RealPlayer would be
less demanding on my system resources. So I'll have to settle for the mono
version until the time comes when I get a genuine Pentium-based computer that
can play the stereo version.

Still, it sounds better on my computer than it does on my brother's -- perhaps
someday he'll get some _real_ multimedia speakers for that one instead of those
teeny-weeny ones that were originally for his portable CD player.

THANKS AGAIN, BRIAN!

You guys might wanna check out the Krofft Superstars Webring:

At the moment, there's no "Captain Kool & the Kongs" site, but I'm
sure it's mentioned on one or two of the sites in the ring. Lots
of other good stuff in there, too. :-)

Enjoy!

Well, of the 4 people you mentioned above, they certainly had more
experience than JUST cartoon voices and game show hosting...of course,
Arte Johnson was very well-known for Laugh-In...as was Gary
Owens...Fred Travelena had been a comic for years and had appeared on
game shows previously...Paul Winchell was a very well-known
ventriloquist and was very popular in his time and had been a game
show panelist constantly...so, the people you mentioned hardly used
their cartoon voice resumes as a basis to get their jobs as game show
hosts...

And of the hosts mentioned, did you also notice that most of them had
short runs hosting their shows?

Arte Johnson - just over 6 months
Fred Travelena - Baby Races - 1 year
Anything For Money - 1 year
Paul Winchell - 1 year

I don't recall how long Gary Owens hosted the syndie Gong Show...but I
think this shows that being a cartoon voice hardly qualifies you as a
successful game show host...
