next week? That suks. That would be ONE rare show to have. Knowing GSN , the
rarest thing they show now is the "GS27 Scratch Remover" commercial. BUT even
that's been edited. Oh yes and they've added some NEW movie stars quiz show to
replace faux pause. what is wrong with these people? if they are going to run a
game show network , then do it properly. the only thing they seem to do right
is to show To Truth the Truth in sequence and i know that wont last for long.
They need to get Mr Game Show in charge of programming, then at least i know
it would be done right.

You mean PEGGY Cass. Mama Cass (Cass Elliott) was a member of The Mamas
and the Papas. I tend to get the names confused myself.

No, MAMA Cass was announced at the end of fridays match game 73 to appear on
lower tier. Even showed her picture. It would of been cool to see!
As I remember right,. they did this one week with Lucie arnaz, showed her going
to appear, then they switched weeks. Maybe they don't have the rights to these
certain shows??? Either way, its confusing.

No, I'm pretty sure he means Mama Cass Elliott herself. I do have a vague
memory of her appearing on MG in the first year of the run (I guess it would
have been difficult to book her after that) in the "new kid on the block"
woman's seat.

Yes, not only was Mama Cass going to be on, but Jack Klugman and Brett Somers
were going to be sitting side by side on the same panel.

NO, Cass Elliot from Mammas and Pappas. It was the episode of MG before she
choked on a ham sandwich and entered the pearly gates.

<off topic>
This is an oft-repeated myth. She died of a heart attack after years of
chronic obesity and drug abuse. The "ham sandwich" remark was offhand from a
coroner who hadn't yet examined her, and the legend started there. Some
reports have her choking on her own vomit, resulting in a heart attack, but
that's as close to ham sandwich theory as it gets.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Yes, you're right-- thanks for trying to set people straight. A few months
ago "Entertainment Tonight" interviewed Cass's daughter, who tried to set
the record straight. (I seem to recall her saying that the ham sandwich
story was invented by a publicist who had to give a quick story to the
newspapers, but I may be wrong-- and however it started, it's fictitious.)
As the daughter said, "Ham sandwich? She was a nice Jewish girl!"

<offtopic> Yes this is true. I have tried to squash this myth too, because often
times someone in a rock -n roll oldies trivia game online would say, trying to
be funny:
"If Mama Cass would of just given Karen Carpenter that sandwich..."

(a cruel joke about two wonderful ladies).

NO, Mama Cass Elliot died in March '74 (the same time I was born) of a ham
sandwich. True, she was overweight and yes, it did cause heart failure as she
struggled with it previously. The drugs didn't help matters either.

That story was covered up because shortly after Mama Cass' death, she was the
butt of all the fat jokes.

It was sad because as Mama Cass was choking, nobody was around to save her and
she did not know CPR and/or The Heimlich Maneuver. That didn't come around
until 1979.

Mama Cass appeared on Match Game two months prior to her death.

Here's something that will show you what a weird, selective memory I have: I
was seven years old when MG premiered, and I distinctly remember one episode
early on that had a shot of Jack and Brett kissing during the closing
credits. Maybe because I had never seen anything like this on a game show
before....

This is incorrect on several points. First, Cass Elliot died not in March
1974, but 25 years ago this week, on July 29, 1974. It's sad that on the
anniversary of her death, GSN won't let us see her in happier times.

Second, the Heimlich Maneuver was created earlier than 1979. I know this
because as a child I first learned about it when "Happy Days" star Anson
Williams (real name Anson William Heimlich) was asked a question about it on
"Break the Bank." He mentioned that Dr. Henry Heimlich is his cousin. "Break
the Bank" aired in 1976-77.

Third, your claim that the heart attack story was a coverup is simply false.
I'll let the facts speak for themselves. This is the story as told on a
website devoted to deceased performers at
http://www.hotshotdigital.com/WellAlwaysRemember.3/MamaCassBio.html - and
let's hope it clears up any misconceptions.

**********
Cass Elliot's death was initially misreported as having been caused by her
choking on a sandwich. The true cause of death -- a heart attack -- was not
determined until an autopsy was performed a week later, but by that time the
"ham sandwich" story had become entrenched in the public's mind.

Origins: The first reports of Cass Elliot's death said that her physician
had stated she "probably choked to death on a sandwich", and the next day's
post-mortem reportedly "showed that she died as a result of choking on a
sandwich while in bed and from inhaling her own vomit". Dr. Keith Simpson,
the pathologist who performed the autopsy on Elliot, found no traces of food
blocking her trachea, however. Dr. Simpson and Gavin Thurston, a London
coroner, determined that Elliot had succumbed to a heart attack brought
about by obesity. Elliot had long been overweight -- she stood 5'5" and
weighed 238 lbs., about twice the proper weight for a woman of her height
and build -- and the effects of long-term obesity and several crash diets
had weakened her heart to the point of failure.

Although the initial news stories mentioned only that Cass Elliot had
"choked on a sandwich", by the next week reports were listing a "ham
sandwich" as the fatal meal. This extra detail was most likely an
embellishment added by the public as a sick commentary on her obesity. Other
rumors surrounding Elliot's death (that she overdosed on heroin or was
pregnant with John Lennon's child) were just as ridiculous and unfounded.

Yes, that is true about Anson Williams' cousin. He did create it in the mid
70s, but it began to be widely-used by around '79. People weren't sure exactly
how to do this maneuver.

It doesn't matter when it was created now; all that matters is that the move
saves lives.

I'll admit; yes, it was July 29, 1974 not March 29 (my b-day) that Mama died.
The media really twisted and exploited her death..how sad.

GSN should pay a tribute to her by showing the Match Game episodes.

The reason the ham sandwich myth came into play was that around her body was a
ham sandwich. Wether it was eaten or not I do not know.

Which is probably why GSN won't show it.

The earlier posts were correct: the ham sandwich was not the cause of
death.

sandwich) see Who 2: http://www.who2.com/casselliot.html

According to former partner John Phillips, she OD'd on heroin and died
of a heart attack.

Cass Elliot died of a heart attack a fact borne out by the coroner's report and
autopsy-

Please visit the Official Cass Elliot Website

http://members.aol.com/Rbcsoup/index.html

We don't have the Game Show network here, if one of you tapes it and they DO
end up showing this MG episode--please let me know

Cass appeared on a lot of Game Shows--Hollywood Squares, I've Got a Secret, To
Tell the Truth, The Dating Game and Celebrity Sweepstakes. She did die on July
29, 1974. She was on Mike Douglas in April and May 74--maybe she did MG at the
same time-

Please let me know if you see her on this show and if you tape it

Thanks
