I've been watching repeats of the Price Is Right for some time now....as
well as new shows....and it seems to me that TPIR has had 3 regular
announcers, not two.

First of all, there was Johnny Olsen. Perfect.

Next, after a parade of temps around 1986, came Rod Roddy. He was
good...very energetic, lively, and knew how to say "A NEW CAR!!".

Now, since about 1992, there's some guy I don't know. His voice cracks all
the time...he seems to have lost interest in announcing....his "come on
down"s sound uninterested and forced out.

Does anyone agree with me? Has Rod Roddy lost his glow?

Flame me, I don't care. I thrive on it.

No flames here. It's time to fire Roddy and replace him with they guy who
should have gotten the gig in the first place.

Gene Wood.

The only person I can think of is Gene Wood, but he usually does the plugs
before the Second Showcase Showdown. He did that last summer when there
were repeats and Roddy was not available. I also knew Tom Kennedy's TPiR
had several announcers since Olsen died.

He just seems disinterested, doesn't he? He's not enthusiastic at all in
the beginning...especially when u hear Johnny's discriptions of things.
And I HATE the "The...Price....Is...Right" stuff.....its The Priceis
Right! :) Cat

Wait...you guys aren't catching my drift, here.

I'm saying EXACTLY what Cat said in the reply to my post....(oh my god I
agreed with him! :)

ROD RODDY SOUNDS BORED AND DISINTERESTED WITH HIS JOB!

I know, Erich, that there were several other announcers after Johnny's
death, and I'm NOT slamming Rod as an announcer...I like him fine, I
guess...but I'm just making a comment that he sounds really disinterested
with his job. And FYI, I don't know about Gene Wood. He sounds to me like
one of those drama-ridden New York news anchors; seems to me like he's
always ready to start yelling, "next on worlds most dangerous (insert noun
here)".

Why would Gene would be doing plugs during reruns of the Price is Right?

From what i heard Rod was told by doctors to tone down his announcing after a
couple of seasons on Price, or otherwise he would lose it altogether. I might
be wrong, but I think i saw that here a while ago.

My guess it's been a growing problem since the $33K win on PYL, where the prize
description kept going and going and going and... You can hear it starting
toward the end, and I don't remember hearing it before then.

I think that would account for this perceived lack of enthusiasm. I never
really noticed that. The thing that makes him look worst is his continual
inability to get through a day of plugs without stammering. I've noticed that
Bob is starting to call attention to it more often these days...at least it
has certain comic potential.

Actually, it's the American Totalisator Company.

Oh yeah. Back in the '50's-60's, companies didn't have to resort to that
STUPID practice of somehow forgetting where their space bar was when they
were thinking of ProductNames or CompanyNames.

God, I hate when they do that.

Some days, he sounds great. Others, maybe he should have stayed home and let
Bob announce. Why the difference?

Yep. His coat today didn't glow at all; it was flat black! What's wrong?

That's true. Bob and Rod do have a great relationship on the show and even when
Rod screws up on a copy, Bob just laughs and continues on with the show, after
Johnny, Rod is the next best thing for TPIR.

Shades of Johnny and Ed, I think. :)
