I tuned in and saw the new set for the first time on Tuesday night. I
really like it. It's a nice change and the floor looks so much bigger now.
Really cool shades of mellow blue in the background too. The new contestant
podiums are refreshing as well. They did a nice job.

The new J! set looks cool. Most of the set pieces appear to be of
similar dimensions to the previous set, and most of the walls appear
to be located at their previous locations on the sound stage. There's
some new hardware in use behind the scenes as well as on-camera. Vista
Electronics ironed-out some early problems related to the score
displays and the split-screen system that displays the contestants'
name, score and Final J! question on the same plasma screen.

THE JEOPARDY SET stinks! it has nothing to do with the game and more like a
midway at a carnival and the answers must have come with the set...they're just
not interesting. It looks like anna nicole smith invented the set. ugh

Wow. Two whole shows, 122 clues, and you have come to this conclusion. Maybe
yer NOT an idiot. Maybe your assessment skills are SO keen, that two shows
are all the information you need, and WE'RE the idiots for taking all of
this time to reach an informed opinion.

Nope. I was right the first time. Yer an idiot.

(besides, if ANS had anything to do with the set design, the concept would
be based around huge spheres, wouldn't it?)

I went to the website and took a tour of the set. i really like it. its a
lot better IMO than the old set (9?-2002), but i havent seen a new episode
yet. Just wondering, if u take the tour at the website of the new set, there
are 2 little "jeopardy" logos on the left of the Q/A board and one on the
backgroud. really looks out of place unless they are used for something.

BTW, i saw a few intros of the old Jeopardy with Art Flemming (70s). What
was the asterisk used for? and why did it flip up when Art made his
entrance? did it have any significance to the show?

Thanks

Would anyone happen to have one of these in a digital format of some sort
(AVI, Real, MPG, whatever)? I'd love to see one of these again. Thanks! :)

The only thing I thought of was in the bonus round "Super Jeopardy!" The
contestants had to answer 5 questions on the board that connected in a row
across down or diagonally. Hence an * astrisk. If that isn't the reasoning
than I am stumped. It doesn't matter though...that was a terrible version
of the show IMHO.

Well, it wasn't nearly as bad as SOME revivals we can think of. I frankly would
really like to see GSN pull J! 78-79 out of mothballs sometime for the rotating
AM shows, but it's a big IF.

It wasn't really "used" for anything, it was just a design element. In that
earlier age, the player's FJ! bets were written on a card and placed in
front of them, covered by a flip-card that had one of those asterisks on it.
I don't recall the opening well enough to remember an asterisk flipping up
when Fleming made his entrance, but my guess is that it was related to the
"flipping up" to reveal the Final Jeopardy wagers.

Oh, wait, I know what you mean now. You weren't watching the "old" old
Jeopardy, you were watching the "new" old Jeopardy. The 1978 remake (which
looked, played and quacked very differently from the classic & modern
versions) did have a great big asterisk that moved to welcome Fleming on
stage. Still, the same answer applies, it was pretty much just an element
of the design.

I agree...the '78 version kinda sucked, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again
on GSN.

I forgot how different the show was until GSN aired an episode on 12/31/99.
Unfortunately I didn't tape it. I recall the following.

The category amounts were $25-$125 and $50-$250

The contestant in last place after the first round was eliminated from the
Double Jeopardy round. (What did they do in case of ties? A sudden death
question, a la WBSM?)

There was no Final Jeopardy. Instead the leader after Double Jeopardy played a
rather uninspired looking bonus round.

I kinda liked the theme music, from what I recall of it.

Under orders from NBC, who wanted format changes and an end game.
After the failure of the 1978 series, Griffin supposedly swore that if
"J!" ever made it back on the air, it would be with the original
format. You know the answer to that.

> I kinda liked the theme music, from what I recall of it.

Which became a regularly-used prize cue on "Wheel."

You are correct:

(MS of set with audience murmuring and opening vamp)

DON PARDO: Now entering the studio are today's contestants...

...a <occupation> from <place>, <name>

(contestant enters from the left of the opening between contestant
desks and Fleming's podium--as s/he approaches his desk, cut to a
close-up--that famous flute figure plays as s/he sits down--back to MS
and similar intro of second contestant)

...and our current champion with cash winnings of <amount>...

(as before, except the champ's winnings are displayed on the tote
board as Pardo announces them--last flute figure and cut to three-shot
of contestants)

These three people will compete for cash prizes today on...

("Take Ten" theme starts as supered logo zooms in from limbo)

..."JEOP-AR-DY!" And now, here's your host, ART FLEMING!"

(applause as Fleming enters from same opening on set, usually from the
right)

FLEMING: Good MORNING, everybody! Thank you Don Pardo, thank you
studio audience, players and, of course, our friends at home! WELCOME
to "Jeopardy!" And there they are, our players for today
(three-shot--Fleming walks to game board)--and now, my dear friends,
LET'S PLAY "JEOPARDY!"

(reveal cue as curtain parts to reveal game board)

The thing about Art Fleming, of course, is that what would come off as
phony from a lot of other hosts was unquestionably genuine when he
spoke it. He and Trebek were comparable in being able to read the
foreign pronunciations and difficult words (and Fleming was probably a
little better because they rarely did pickups in those days), but
anyone who saw "Jeopardy!" back in the old days knows which host was
the warmest and most genuine.

GOOD RIDDANCE to the sushi-bar set!

But, with that, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO MY SHOW?!?!

The new set SUCKS!!!!

I've been watching Jeopardy! since the Trebek version hit the air, and
I CANNOT STAND the new set! Whoever designed it should be shot!

And would SOMEONE PLEASE BRING BACK THE SUPER JEOPARDY! set?!

If a game show's set really takes away from the game show so much that you
cannot bear to watch it anymore, then I strongly suggest finding another
activity to occupy that half-hour of your time.

I disagree. The new Jeopardy! set is one of the most gawd awful things
Jeopardy! has ever come up with.

And the Super Jeopardy! set didn't HAVE marble partterns on it. It was
a gloss black floor!

You disagree that you need to find something better to do if your enjoyment

That wasn't a suggestion. It was plain old FACT.

The floor, no. Surrounding the board and the contestant podiums, yes.

Uhmm... No. You're wrong again. The contestant podiums on Super
Jeopardy! were the same exact podiums used on the neon Jeopardy! set
from 1987. NO MARBLE ANYWHERE.

As for the game board? Marble? I've never seen marble around the game
board in the 18 years Jeopardy! has been on the air! The game board on
Super Jeopardy! was rimmed in aluminum finish!

I'm not saying my enjoyment has been ruined. I'm just voicing my views
on somethinbg that I find to be abhorrable. They could've done a
better job designing the set. That's for damn sure.

Ok.. I can see where I may have made people angry by my remarks. But I
was just stating opinion. Aren't I allowed to have one?

Yes, I dislike the New set to Jeopardy!. I've disliked the sishi bar
set, and quite frankly, I never did care for the new 1991 electronic
set either. I think Jeopardy! should've kept updating the set they had
for Super Jeopardy!

Hell, why didn't they try using the Super Jeopardy! set for a few
years (say, until 1994-ish?), then throw some glass bricks in it like
the sushi bar set? Wouldn't've that looked much better? I've rendered
it in 3D, and I'll say it looked MUCH better than the sushi bar set or
the ugly set they have now. Or how's this? Giving the 1991 set to
Jeopardy! the glassy look of the sushi bar set, yet still retaining
the shiny black floor, and the colors and basic design elements of the
Super Jeopardy! set.

And most of all, retaining the original 1984 opening/closing and Final
Jeopardy! theme. That, I think, can still be done.

I've looked at these concepts (and rendered them in 3D) and just shake
my head and say "Why didn't Jeopardy! use those instead?"

In light of this, I created my idea for the Jeopardy! set. It includes
design elements from the previous sets up to the Sushi bar set.

Four podiums, three with scoreboards, and a game board, and that is really
all I need to enjoy Jeopardy.

the new set is stinko and so is the genius that okayed it ....plus they
should be worrying about the dumbing down of America. the categories are too
cute and the answers arent intersting. we used to learn something from
jeopardy, but now they must be using "trivial pursuit".
