All,

I just watched a 1983 special called "Those Wonderful TV Game Shows";
during the 1st segment, they showed a bunch of clips to the tune of the
Billy Joel song "Easy Money" (predating John Ricci's video by 12
years!).

Anyway, among the clips were:

- The intro to a 1974-76 High Rollers ep
- Some clips from that NBC Jackpot we all have

Now, considering Ian Wallis's recent discovery that the NBC mass tape
erasure took place in 1978, is it possible that these shows still exist
somewhere??

We can only hope they are hiding somewhere Chuck! Wondering where you saw
that special?

I got it in a trade.

There are other tantalizing glimpses in other NBC specials. The 1976 NBC 50th
Anniversary special has a glimpse of Alex standing by the big numbers of the
old High Rollers and a briefer flash of a late 1960s Match Game opening where
Tony Randall's name can be seen on the panel.

The 1986 NBC 60th Anniversary special, post-destruction also has a glimpse of
the very first episode of Jeopardy! with Art Fleming.

In 1977 or thereabouts, each of the networks ran anniversary specials - NBC
and CBS had 50th Anniversary specials, ABC had a 25th (although I think ABC
selected some event other than the creation of the network just so they
could have a competing anniversary show).
From what I remember:
ABC's was a one-night show, and the only reference to a game show was a
brief shot of Richard Dawson at the beginning of a "Family Feud" episode.
NBC dedicated a segment to game shows, but didn't say very much; the only
things I remember was clips of various shows mentioning money amounts in
their openings (ending with something like "$34,000" from "Wheel of
Fortune"; "$50,000" from "JackPot!"; "$100,000" from the syndicated "Name
That Tune") followed by host introductions (ending with "The one, the
only...Groucho!" from "You Bet Your Life"). NBC's 50th Anniversary book
includes a photo of the set of "The Magnificent Marble Machine", but I
don't think they show the pinball machine itself.
CBS had Art Linkletter on the Match Game whatever-year-it-was set
discussing CBS's quiz shows; however, he didn't mention any of the rigged
ones (about the only thing he mentioned about the 1950s was "after the
scandal, the only game shows left were the panel shows").

I remember that special. I first saw it in 1984, shortly after Jack Barry's
passing, and had clips of JACKPOT, SALE OF THE CENTURY, STUMPERS, WHEEL OF
FORTUNE, and a few others. The special, hosted by Carl Reiner, did a tribute
to the late, great Allen Ludden, as he said goodbye on STUMPERS' final episode
(Dec. 31, 1976) with guests Anita Gillette and the late Bill Bixby with glasses
of wine.

Worst shot ever. The photographer was apparently lying on the floor next to
the stairs leading from the contestant/celebrity podiums to the machine. You
can see the body of the machine in profile, but not any of the machine itself.

Someday I'll get these photos scanned in and put one on the page below...

This footage can be seen at the Museum of TV & Radio on the first tape of
Mark Goodson's seminar on game shows.
