Just a quick piece of entertainment news for all you CPJs out there:

Pierce Brosnan looks set to take on Matt Damon's role of Tom Ripley in
Ripley's Game, the sequel to The Talented Mr Ripley.

Filming on the next installment of Patricia Highsmith零 anti-hero series is
scheduled to begin this autumn and film bosses are keen to sign the 007
actor.

Dougray Scott, currently seen as the villain getting in a bit of a tizzy
over Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton (for vastly differing reasons) in
Mission: Impossible 2, is also being mentioned as a possible co-star, as is
Rupert Everett (The Next Best Thing).

I personally loved Damon in the role. Isn't Brosnan a bit /too old/ ? He's
atleast 40 now, right?

Isn't he bit too not right for the part?

I read that John Malkovitch was also being considered (perhaps for another
role).

Thandie Newton is superb (with David Thewlis) in the recent Bertolluci film,
"Besieged", available on DVD. I thought she was wasted in MI-2, which seemed
more like an 'off' 007 epic. ("Ronin" was more like _non_-'off' 007 movie.)

Funny that you'd mention Pierce Brosnan. I'm in the midst of watching a
single-tape (EP) of "The Noble House", a mini-series produced in the later 80s,
based on the James Clavell novel -- a bit dated and hokey, but quite interesting
IMO. I remember enjoying it when it was first shown; I'm just coming to the
scene where the communist spy is drugged and tortured in the "Red Room".

BTW, can anyone tell me whether Ms. Highsmith was British or American (I'm
inclined to think the latter)? Can't find any info on the net or in my numerous
reference books.

He's pushing 50 (if not there) by now.

Hey, I loved "Ronin." It is so rare these days to see a good car chase.

He'd be interesting; I don't think Brosnan could do a convincing American accent.
Malkovitch even looks slightly like an older, ravaged/debauched version of Matt Damon.

I liked it too.

Wow!

I just checked IMBd, and he's 47. I always thought he was in his 30s. I
don't know why, I just did.

Does he look extraordinarily good for his age or am I just a dimwit?

If you've seen "Grey Owl" or the latest Bond flick, he's definitely looking
his age, albeit very good for very late 40s.

I recall reading he was 34 way back when I was 38 -- but that was in "People"
magazine!

Brosnan and Deborah Raffin made a stunning couple in "The Noble House".

He looks it. On the other hand, Jeremy 'the king' Irons doesn't look old at
all, and he's 52.

Well, when you thought this in your cradle you were right. Unfortunately
time doesn't stand still even for impossibly goodlooking actors, except
within their films and tv shows.

FWIW, this week's Entertainment Weekly has this to say:

Ripley's Game - STAR: John Malkovich takes over for Matt Damon in a
20-years-later follow-up to The Talented Mr. Ripley. VERDICT: Does
anyone play quietly simmering menace better than Malkovich? All
sociopaths should age this well. A

I couldn't be more pleased. With Brosnan in the title role, I doubt I
would have bothered to see the film. With Malkovich as Ripley, I'm
looking forward to the debut.

So I wonder what happens in the sequel. Perhaps the inept Italian
police finally get a lead on Freddy's murder?

Unfortunately, reading the book won't always give a handle on the movie.
