Hey Ken,
Just checked the site. This happens every once and a while, not my site
though, it is fortunecity that is having problems. Both my fortunecity
websites seem to be having loading problems this Halloween. It will probably
be up later today. Cheers ;)

services like Fortunecity a lot of people wouldn't be able to have their own
websites, or at least wouldn't be able to have large websites, because the cost

I don't know how the heck you could get a dozen ads opening up on my site.
What were they for? I only get two. If you really hate pup-up adds, as some
people do you can visit by going to my long URL at:
http://lavender.fortunecity.com/judidench/428/foreverknight.html
But since all you did was point out the faults about my site I take it you
do not like it.

I didn't get a chance to look at the site...I dumped out of it quickly
before the ads crashed the system. Each ad opens up another window and I
was nervous about the system crashing. I'll check it out again later after
I run my next full backup. I can't say there was anything on the site to
not like...I'm just concerned when a site starts opening extra windows (for
any reason) or attempts to penetrate my firewall. With all of the malicious
hackers out there my philosophy is you can't be too careful.

running, an 8086 with 640K of memory? And why are you acting as if pop up ads
are something unusual? *Most* web sites of individuals have them because most
people have their sites up on free webspace. If you won't go to sites with pop
ups, there aren't very many sites left these days that you can go to. Ads are
the price we pay for having free webspace. Sure, it's possible you may run out
of memory due to lots of pop ups if you have a very very small amount of memory
on your system, but this isn't something that should cause physical damage that
you would need a backup for! The worst thing that happens is you get stuck and
have to reboot. Even a 386 or 486 should be able to handle web surfing with no
problems. RAM is cheap...just slap in as much as your system will hold and you
should do okay, or keep a chunk of your hard drive free for use as virtual
memory.

Firewall?!! I've been on line for upwards of ten years now and have never had
any reason for concern, and have most certainly not ever needed a "firewall" to
protect me. I have a good anti-virus program that runs on startup and stays in
the background and I update it frequently whenever they issue an update. I have
*never* had a problem. My husband is a computer technician and if anything
else was needed for protection, we would have it.

That's generated by Fortunecity when you leave a Fortunecity site (such as when
following a guestbook link or when you leave the site completely to go on to
another). The most effective way of dealing with popups usually is to minimize
them rather than closing them. Usually if you minimize them they just sit
there quietly at the bottom of your screen and you can forget they're there.

I didn't think so either...but I recently installed Zonealarm. It will
knock you for a loop when you see how many attempts are
made to break into the firewall.

I use it in conjunction with ZoneAlarm and it's great! It kills the ads
before they get a chance to show up on your screen and it lets you manage
cookies, as well.
Best of all, it's free. :-)

Just as an aside, my 386 didn't crash when I went to that
site. I opened it 16 times simultaneously and it was ok, but
S-L-O-W!
Ken, your post was written using MS Outlook 5--a system that
can run that and live through it shouldn't have any problems
viewing a free web hosting site with a couple popup ads.
(Though I'm all for backing up data on a regular basis. It
can be a pain to duplicate your work when something fails.
<Groan!>) One or two or even several popup ads shouldn't
hurt your system. (Two is about the limit of my patience
though, beyond that, it's a royal pain.)
Please forgive me if I seem to be getting personal, but you
appear to be all nervous on the 'Net, Ken. Of course, I
could be mistaken in that impression. I just wanted to say
it's really not that scary here! I hope you can take it easy
and have fun. If you still feel uncomfortable, I have some
links to Internet safety organizations I'd be happy to email
you. Some good information might make you feel better so you
don't have to sweat the small stuff; you could concentrate
on dealing with the real safety issues where necessary and
just plain have fun the rest of the time. :)

nosed 15 year olds on the net whos idea of fun is to trash someone elses
computer or web site. It is the equivalent of these kids coming into my
business, dousing the place with gasoline and lighting a match.
