I didn't post this here yesterday, so here is our latest message about KtK's
fundraising drive for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:

Just an update and a repeat of our message...  Thanks to some extremely
generous contributions toward Kickstart the Knight's first *full page* ad to be
placed in the Hollywood Reporter, we now need to raise just *$895.00* by
November 25, 2000.  Please consider sending a contribution of any amount you
can afford.  To put things in perspective, we now need:  Just 179 $5
contributions, OR just 90 $10 contributions, OR just 60 $15 contributions.  We
will keep everyone posted on the status of the fundraising.

I won't keep repeating the original message every day, I promise, but here is
KtK's appeal one more time, as posted yesterday (the numbers of course have
changed as stated above):

Kickstart the Knight wants to maximize the impact of our latest Hollywood
Reporter ad by making it a *full page* ad for the first time in KtK history.
Our recent online auction has raised nearly two-thirds of the money we need
for a full page ad.  We just need to raise another $1,000.00 to make our
first full page ad a reality.  We know there are a lot of Forever Knight fans
out there who want the original FK series to return to television; who want
FK merchandise such as videotapes, novels, etc.; and who want new FK in the
form of FK movies.  In order to help achieve these goals, KICKSTART THE
KNIGHT NEEDS YOUR HELP!  Between now and November 25, 2000 KtK wants to raise
$1,000.00 to make a full page ad a reality.  It will again be a custom
designed beautiful original artwork, as our other recent ads have been.  And
it has the ability to make a HUGE impact on The Powers That Be.  The recent
full page ad for Lexx caused a major stir in the industry, getting the
attention of E! Online, Cinescape, SFC's Bonnie Hammer, and others.  We
really feel that now is the time to really go after The Powers That Be with a
full page ad.  We need your contributions, of whatever amount, to make the ad
a reality.  If just 200 FK fans would contribute $5.00 each, we would have
enough.  PLEASE HELP US DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO GET FOREVER KNIGHT BACK TO
THE FANS!  If Lexx fans can raise $3,700.00, there's *no reason* why we can't
raise $2,695.00!  To contribute via credit card, please click the PayPal icon
on the KtK website which is at http://www.ktk.op.nu or
http://members.aol.com/ktkpage
OR to contribute via Cashier's Check or Money Order (no personal checks
please), please make the CC or MO payable to HOLLYWOOD REPORTER (please *do
not* make them payable to KtK) and mail it to:  Kickstart the Knight, P.O.
Box 1914, Racine, WI 53401-1914.  We want to help *you* make more FK a
reality!!!!

Thank you for your continued support!   Please feel free to forward this
message to anyone who you think may want to help!

PayPal works just fine, we've had no problems. The vast majority of the
$1,600+ that we already raised was paid via PayPal and it performed perfectly.
We are offering the PayPal option as a convenience, for people who want to help
fund the ad but find it easier for one reason or another to do it via credit
card. It is a really good feeling to see a big beautiful ad in a magazine and
to know that you helped make it happen, so we wanted to make this possible for
everybody who was interested. Whatever may have happened with EBay PayPal
transactions have absolutely nothing to do with what KtK is doing. In addition
to using PayPal for KtK, I've used it personally for some time and find it to
be an excellent service.

The problem with paypal is that it offers no protection to the buyer thus
allowing the seller to screw the buyer over. A number of people on Ebay
have gotten nailed by this problem. If you use paypall go into the
transaction with both eyes wide open. If you are a buyer paypal will offer
you no protection at all.

Okay, so as I said this has nothing to do with what Kickstart the Knight is
doing. We aren't selling anything. We are asking people to contribute to
funding our latest ad, just like all the other ads we've placed in the past.
Previously we were only able to collect funds via cashier's checks and money
orders. PayPal is allowing more FK fans who want to help us place the ad to do
so, by giving them the option to contribute by credit card. We have no
intention of "screwing over" anybody. Over the past four years or so we have
placed *many* ads for FK with fan contributions and run *many* online auctions
to raise funds for ads. To the best of my knowledge, no one has been
dissatisfied with any of this. We also provide a service for FK fans in the
form of a quarterly newsletter via both snail mail and email, and a website.
Everyone knows who we are and how to contact us. We've been around for a long
time and we aren't going anywhere. There's no reason why people can't
contribute to the upcoming FK ad in Hollywood Reporter using cashier's checks,
money orders, OR PayPal.

On an off topic note, I don't really understand how PayPal facilitates scamming
on EBay. You can get just as scammed if you're sending a check, and scammed
even *worse* if you're sending a money order, so what's the difference? With
PayPal at least you have the protections given by your own credit card company.
And unless they've changed their policy since the last time I was there, EBay
themselves protects buyers for up to $200. Anybody who buys something over
$200 on EBay based on nothing but trust, without getting the insurance coverage
that is offered (for a fee) has got to be out of their minds.

Our local tv stations were reporting those protections don't apply to paypal
transactions. Apparently the problem occurs because paypal is a service for
sellers and offes no protection at all for buyers. KtK may be a very good
organization but the problem could arise somewhere in the process if hackers
were to get a hold of you CC #s.

It does because people assume they can lodge a complaint with there credit
card. Paypal is a service for the sellers so that they can't handle
complaints from the buyer. Where pay pal is a middle man they aren't
obligated by Federal rules on credit cards. The bottom line is....the
federal protrection cardholders thought was there isn't

Obviously, the logical solution for the person concerned about paying
via PayPal is for he or she to send a money order or cashier's check
made out to Hollywood Reporter to their address, as suggested in the
original post.

It is true that some of these services offer little or no protection to
a buyer. I won an item in a pre-sale auction. The item was supposed to
be available in July or August. It still isn't available. The seller
won't send a substitute, won't refund, won't answer my e-mails. I paid
by check because the person's huge amount of positive feedback gave me a
false sense of security. Now I can't get any of the insurance because
so much time has passed. I've complained from everyone to the auction
"house" to the Better Business Bureau to the Federal Trade Commission to
the Postal Inspector. People are real sorry, but they're not going to
do anything for me.

If you read about PayPal on eBay's site, this information doesn't appear
to be entirely true. Both seller and buyer seem to be protected
provided the seller is "verified," meaning they've provided proof of a
bank account. Sellers also appear to be protected from buyer scams.

That is E-bays side and of course they are completely unbiased (tongue

Natalie would likely comment that you don't seem very
unbiased either. In fact, you're downright belligerent in
badmouthing this company. Over and over and over.

That is because I know people who dealt with E-Bay customers in good faith

And this is not eBay. The PayPal service was referred to
here as one of the possible ways someone can make a
donation. Donations are a one-way transaction. Your concern
is misplaced in this instance.

True...this is not ebay...but you will be out of luck if you send your
donation through paypal and it never lands at KtK. The bottom line is to go
into this type of transaction with both eyes open.

The problem was not that the recipients didn't get PayPal's
payments, but that the recipients didn't keep up their end
of the transactions--they didn't send the buyers the goods
after payment was received. There are no goods in a
donation, so your concern is invalid here. This is not a
problem with PayPal nor is it a problem with eBay. This is a
problem with people sending money to dishonest sellers and
getting scammed. KtK isn't selling anything, so your point
is moot here.

Getting back to the topic, how is KtK's drive going? I hope
it works!

What happens if I send money by paypal and it never gets to KtK?

If PayPal's service doesn't meet your satisfaction, take
your receipt of the transaction and take PayPal to court.

If you, personally, don't want to use PayPal, you can always
pay your bills etc. via another method. Recall that the
problem wasn't with PayPal, it was with the sellers. That
kind of trouble happens with any payment method, from cash
to checks to money orders, unfortunately. If PayPal makes
you uncomfortable, don't use it. But it's ridiculous to
continually slander the company.

So, how's the KtK drive going, everyone?

Well, thanks for asking! :-) It's going well considering that it's only been
for a few days. In addition to the $1,600+ we had already raised in our recent
auction (mostly via Paypal <G>), we have received another $275 (all via Paypal
<G>) so far. We still need to raise $725 by about Nov. 25, and hopefully FK
fans will come through! The proposed ad, BTW, should be up on the KtK website
soon...we're just working on final wording. I'll post when it's up for folks
to look at. The art in for ad is gorgeous and features a Nick, LC, Nick with
Janette, and Nat. So let's hear from all those NatPackers, all those Immortal
Beloveds, all those Cousins, all those UFers, and all those all-around
Knighties out there! Anything you can contribute is appreciated by KtK and FK
fans everywhere!

Just curious: is the art for the ad a graphic artist's
representation of what he envisions the characters to look
like, or is it the likenesses of the actors who played those
characters? If the latter, will TPTB (or the actors
themselves) mind KtK's using the actors' likenesses? And if
not, can they do anything about that?

The art is our artist's representation of the actual FK characters (as opposed
to the actors...that is to say they are "in character" in the ad). To see an
example, go to the KtK website at http://www.ktk.op.nu or
http://members.aol.com/ktkpage and follow the link for our latest ad.

>If the latter, will TPTB (or the actors
>themselves) mind KtK's using the actors' likenesses?

Well, so far so good. We've done quite a number of ads this way now and have
so far avoided the dreaded "cease and desist" order. :-) As far as the
actors, some of them have seen and autographed our ads (often for us to later
auction to raise money for more ads). They are fine with it, and hopefully the
others who may or may not have seen our ads also won't mind since it is
original artwork and is really of a character and not of them personally.

>And if
>not, can they do anything about that?

I'm not sure about the actors. I think technically TPTB could, but most likely
the worst they would do is issue a cease and desist since KtK is not making any
money off this (and in fact it costs us money since we as individuals
contribute to the cost of the ads as well).

If actual shots from the show are used in conjunction with the ad, sure
TPTB can do something about it if they choose to since said pictures are
copyrighted. This is assuming, of course, that the folks behind the ad
don't seek the "blessing" of TPTB to use them. but I'm sure they've
considered the ramifications of unauthorized use.

Right. That's exactly why we don't use actual shots from the show. We have a
graphic artist create original art.
