Something that really, really bugs me about the cooking shows and
competitions - hardly anyone ever covers their hair! Top Chef - nope;
Chopped - nope; iron Chef America - nope, and on and on, to say
nothing of shows like Martha's and RRay's - never. It's disgusting.

Some have facial hair as well, disgusting... looks like they don't
bathe either. Those Kooking shows have very little redeeming value.

Very few people cover their hair in the kitchen at home. Do you? I
essentially never do.

(Sure, there are reasons for people cooking commercially for hundreds of
people to be more careful than people cooking for two or five or even a
dozen family and friends, too. But "disgusting" isn't about actual
health risks, it's an emotional reaction, and should be the same in
either case.)

That is true. I doubt anyone ever got a disease from a hair in their
soup.

There are folks who are lovers, and put their mouths all over each
other, but who wouldn't finish off a piece of fried chicken that their
partner had eaten half of. That seems very silly.

I happened to see the final part of a masterchef usa issue few hours
ago, it was ridiculous, totally. It was a team challenge, 6 or 8 persono
total, ok let's go with the show: one of the contenders forgot to put
salt in his pasta pot, another one burnt something else, a girl let her
salmon pan fall on the floor, then I sadly switched channel

Nor do I. I have to wonder how many of the people who insist on
professional kitchen staff wearing hair nuts.... what do they do do

Professional kitchen staff should wear hair nets because customers get
freaked out by hair in their food, and however silly that might be,
they are the customers. A year or two ago, I found a little gnat in a
salad. It was my son's salad, and he wasn't going to eat it, I was.
I asked for a new salad, and they fell all over themselves
apologizing. I told them that it was no big deal, and there's not
much way to prevent something like that. They brought out a
replacement salad that was almost twice the size, which was great. It
meant I got almost three salads with my meal. Then they offered a
free dessert, which I declined. They really wanted to give me that
dessert so I'd not leave thinking poorly of them, but the big salad
and just the offer of free dessert were plenty.

The same would have been the case had I found hair. Now if I'd found
anything to do with cockroaches, that'd be very different.

Masterchef got predictable after a while, but you might want to watch
one of the later shows, after the ones who crumple under pressure have
been weeded out. I think Gordon Ramsay is harder on the amateurs in
that show than on the professionals in his 1000 other series. I like
the episodes where the contestants get a box of ingredients and have
to make something.

Masterchef shows that there are a lot of home cooks who have one or a
few really excellent dishes in their repertoire, but who are not cut
out to be professionals.

Finding a hair in food poses no real health issue but it certainlly
detracts from enjoying ones meal.

>What I do find disgusting is sweat dripping from the cook's nose.

Again, no real health issue but not something condusive to enjoying
ones meal... happens all the time but you just don't see it. There's
a real reason for those doors on the resto kitchen... hair and sweat
is the least of it.

I don't *really* like finding even my own hair in my food, but it's not
going to give me anything I don't already have. Doesn't happen that

That is my feeling. I don't put on a cap or beard cover when I cook at
home and don't expect my wife to wear a hear net. Nor do I expect our
hosts and hostesses to do it. If I ever find a piece of hair in my food
in a restaurant I will bring it to their attention, but I am not anal

I was listening to an old Richard Pryor routine on the way in to work
tonight. He told about the aftermath of his stepmother's funeral, how
his family's friends and neighbors brought over vast quantities of food.
Pryor especially enjoyed the "dressing" made by an old relative, which
was loaded with good stuff like almonds -- until somebody noticed legs
on one of the almonds.

I certainly don't, but I do wear an apron :) Has nothing to do with hair,
just potential splatter.

I have long (past my shoulders) hair but I don't wear hairnets. I do keep

The examples I gave in my original post were all about professional
chefs/kitchens, or wanna-bes. NOT a regular home-kitchen type cook or
chef. I don't know anyone who cooks in their own home who wears a
hairnet or hat while cooking. That wasn't my point.
