Top Chef Jr... "Best" junior chefs in America....

Recently came across this youtube that includes Troy who was eliminated from
Top Chef Jr this past week.

Another participant, Sofia (the one with the glasses) was in an acting class
with one of my Facebook friends in New York.

So, are those kids the BEST junior chefs in America, or only the best junior
chefs in America with stage mothers?

I wondered, though I stopped watching when other shows started up.

It's not that kids can't cook. But their capability seemed a tad beyond
their age (a lot of that stuff I wouldn't have been interested in eating,
let alone cooking at that age), and somehow yes, they didn't quite act
like kids. Maybe they were really exceptional, and spend all their time
watching cable cooking shows, but it seemed a bit much. I find it hard to
believe that they could find that many kids who were both that capable at
cooking and also be good on camera.

Truly. In the Food Network shows of similar ilk, that is, Next Food Network
Star and the recent Rachael v. Guy kids version, the good on camera skills
were not immediately present and, in fact, in some cases, non-existent.
However, since I'm starting to see chefs cross-over from one show/network to
another as they develop a following (e.g. Tiffany Derry was on Top Chef and
Top Chef All-Stars, Bar Rescue and most recently on Cutthroat Kitchen),
perhaps we should have a competition between contestants (be it kids or
adults) from one channel to another. Top Chef v. Next Food Network Star...
of course, the Top Chef people don't have to worry about doing demos and
on-camera tests, but I'd bet they are better chefs than the NFNS folk. Might
be interesting.

I also know some people who have been on or have tried out for various
reality type shoes. Not cooking but entertainment type shows. They are not
necessarily looking for the best, or the worst. They are looking for drama.
People who were very good were turned down because they didn't have a sick
father or mother in jail or came from a poor family or had to overcome some
obstacle in their life. In some cases you can't really see a fantastic back
story. These people are good, but they do not win. And in the case of
those shows where you call in to vote, all of a sudden you can't vote for
your favorite. There is a problem with the line or something. You make a
complaint, it is ignored.

I am also slightly familiar with one show. Won't give the name but it has
to do with moms and they want total drama. A place that I go to was
contacted to be on this show. We had no drama and we were not put on the
show. Also know that this show is totally fake. They come up with fake
competitions and when there are actually real competitions, the winners are
clearly not necessarily the real winners. They use their real names on this
show and you can easily look this stuff up online.

As for the cooking shows, it amuses me to see the same people on one show
and then another. Some years ago here was a chef, I think he was Italian.
He tossed a chunk of raw bacon to a guy in the audience, seated at a table.
Told the guy to taste it which he did. Chef shouted something like, "OMG!
That's raw bacon! I didn't think you would DO that!" The show was off the
air not long after. Don't know if that was the reason or not but... All of
a sudden that guy was in the audience of pretty much every cooking show that
had an audience.

Yeah. I cooked as a kid and was perhaps a bit ahead of my age in that I
would try anything. Pasta from scratch, baking bread, even pita bread, made
my own tortillas, popovers, etc. But... I really had no knowledge of how
various things would react. I couldn't do things on the fly and I had to
refer to detailed recipes. Then again, my mom hated to cook and when she
did, it was usually something simple and lots of packets were involved.

I think I was probably about 25 or close to it by the time I could finally
just wing things and not have to refer to recipes. I did do a lot of baking
prior to that and I did do my own versions of things and they worked. Like
adding different flavors and things.
