I just got my DVD copy of "Done The Impossible" in the mail today, and
am totally stoked to see it for the first time! There was a flyer for
the www.quantummechanix.com website, and a couple of things caught my
eye. The Alliance Currency Mone Pack and the Large-Scale Serenity
Replica.

Has anyone purchased these? What's the quality like?

I don't see anything about a Serenity replica. Did you mean Mal's gun?

I would give my eyeteeth for a set of those blueprints. Unfortunately,
nowdays, I couldn't afford one page.

It's listed on the Serenity page as being available for pre-order in
early 2007. The flyer I received didn't have any additional
information like actual measurements or cost. Just as well, as I very
likely won't be able to afford it anyway. That's why I'm going to
start seriously working on a Lego version!

Indeed! Even $100, which seems quite a fair price based on their
descriptions of the process to make them accurate and frameable. My
wife would probably kill me if she found I'd spent that much on a
fanboy item!

Probably your best bet. It seems like I saw one of those over at
Fireflyfans.net once upon a time. The availability of the wetdream
Large Scale Serenity "available for pre-order in early 2007" is suspect
in my mind, being that it is June 2007, which is past "early 2007."

I did see a pro model builder developing plans for an 1:87 scale
Serenity a couple years back. I haven't heard anything else since he
considered that commercially un-doable. (Being an HO scale fan, my
mouth watered with that thought!)

If you do and she does, can I inherit them? ;-)

Sorry to be the announcer of bad news but, according to the
www.quantummechanix.com website, they're _sold out_ of the
'limited-edition run of 750 copies signed by Geoffrey Mandel and by Tim
Earls' www.quantummechanix.com/serenity/blueprints.

I'm glad my wife ordered mine when she did. She got them for me a month
early for Father's Day. Sorry about my bragging, but she is so wonderful.

At $100, I think it was a steal. I believe anyone who owns one of these
autographed sets could easily get their $100 plus shipping for their
set. Maybe much more since they were a limited set and are sold out now.

The 10 sheet set comes with a separate form, made in the same design as
the blueprints, that identifies the set _number_ of 750 and is signed by
the afore mentioned persons. (The blueprints themselves are unmarked
and beautifully flawless.)

Did I mention that I have a wonderful wife?

Oh, by the way, a little Easter Egg, at least for me, was some images I
hadn't seen before.
Go to the www.quantummechanix.com website.
Click on 'Latest News'.
On their news page, click on the little boxes in the top banner. Each
one sets a new background fore the page.
As you select each box, right click on the background area of the main
frame and select 'View Background' (or your browser's equivalent) to see
the whole image.
Enjoy.

Lucky bastard...

You know, there is an alt.binaries.multimedia.firefly newsgroup that
would be PERFECT for sharing scans of those Sold-Out gems....

(or even alt.binaries.multimedia.scifi...)

... ;-)

Not even talking about the legalities;

The only scanner I have is only 8.5 x 11. That would mean scanning in 6
or 8 sections per sheet and piecing those large images back together.
And since they're 18 x 20, a simple 300 dpi scan in full color would be
116 MBytes for each print.

I don't know if I have the patience to go through all that.

(But, back before I got mine, I think I remember seeing some images of
them somewhere on the net. I just don't remember where. I think I was
using standard web searching tools, I.E. Google)

I made an error. Those sheets are 18 x 24, not 18 x 20.

Ah, yes. This page was my inspiration to attempt my own version. Mr.
Doyle's version is wonderful in so many ways. I only slightly adapted
his minifig crew for mine. I hope to do justice to his version and
and to carry that vision even further!

Right now I'm planning to start with a version that I think would be
similar to what Lego would make if they actually had the license.
Hopefully, that will familiarize me with the proper sense of
proportion as I begin to work on the larger version that will be
minifig scaled! I want to have a fully lighted version with a
rotating ring, complete interior and removable "skin" so that the
interior can be easily viewed and remodeled as necessary.

I will be keeping a photo journal for both projects, so stay tuned
(but don't expect an update soon, I'm betting both may take quite
awhile!).

We can still hope. But I seem to recall he eventually settled on some
other scale for some reason...

Hey, whoa! Which "Serenity page" would that be? Hadn't heard about that
one.

Hey David,

There isn't an exact link (don't know why 'cause I'm not super-savvy
with HTML, Javascript, frames or whatever!). However, if you go to
the main page (and join first) down at the bottom left are icons to
bring up the specific page. The Serenity page currently only lists
the Alliance Currency pack (sold out), Mal's gun and the Serenity
blueprints (sold out again, waaaah!).

They've got a mailing list.

Oh, I figured it out. You meant the "Serenity Page" at
quantummechanix.com. I missed that meaning somehow. Anyway, I signed up
to receive updates.

(make sure to click the text "Serenity" in the bar across the top,
rather than the logo that just takes you to the blueprints)

And yes, that's the only mention I found of the "large-scale replica" --
and early 2007 has come and gone...

Nope, hold on a minute -- I take that back. If one goes to "Latest
News," and then finds something classed by categories in there and
clicks on the "serenity" topic -- there's this:

" You wanna run this ship?
Posted on January 9th, 2007 by Jason Eaton.
Categories: QMx Main, Serenity.
Today I want to share a little information about our upcoming Serenity
"Large-Scale" Replica. She'll be approximately 20" long, will feature
the blue/grey deco and detailing as seen in Serenity, and will basically
rule the display shelf in your home. There will be more features that
we'll talk about soon - we want to ensure that the Quantum Mechanix
Serenity will be the ultimate replica of this much-loved ship, and I
promise to tell you all there is to know about this amazing project, as
it unfolds, right here on Propaganda. Click the thumbnail for pricing
and more information! "

...sounds super-duper expensive, is what it sounds like. Worth noting
that they're still using that same "wrong" picture of the ship (with the
fat neck) that's on the box-set and almost every fan page logo?

I'm sure folks have studied up on this, and decided on the "limited
edition collectors' item" route for reasons -- but I sure wish this
stuff could be a little less-fancy and more-mass-produced and accessible
to those of us who wouldn't have to get a divorce if we spent that kind
of money on toy spaceships.
