----------------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL
=======
1.01 What is Father Ted and what is it about?
Father Ted is a comedy about three priests who live on a remote
island off the West coast of Ireland and the adventures they have.
They all appear to have been sent there for their failings but this
is not said explicitly. Father Ted Crilly has had some money
problems ("The money was just resting in his account"). Father
Dougal Maguire is a simpleton. Father Jack is an old drunk.
1.02 Who are the stars?
Dermot Morgan..........Fr. Ted Crilly (d. 28th February 1998)
Ardal O'Hanlon.........Fr. Dougal Maguire
Frank Kelly............Fr. Jack Hackett
Pauline McGlynn........Mrs. Doyle
1.03 How many episodes were made?
There were 25 episodes altogether. There was 6 episodes in the first
season, 10 episodes in the second season, a Christmas special and 8
episodes in the third and final season.
1.04 Is the show Irish or English?
The show was written by two Irish writers and the actors and the
director are all Irish. The production was done by an English
company Hattrick Productions, as the shows writers felt that RTE,
the Irish state television company, had a poor record in producing
comedies and there was a better infrastructure already in place in
England for good comedy production.
Hat Trick Productions is a highly successful comedy company which
was, previously responsible for 'Have I Got News For You?' and
'Whose Line Is It Anyway?'
1.05 What awards has Father Ted won?
[!!!]
1999 BRITISH ACADEMY FILM AND TELEVISION AWARDS
Best Comedy Programme or Series Best Comedy Performance : Dermot
Morgan
1997 BRITISH COMEDY AWARDS
Best C4 sitcom: Father Ted [???]
Best Channel 4 sitcom: Father Ted Christmas Special [???]

Top TV comedy actress: Pauline McLynn (Father Ted)
1995 BRITISH COMEDY AWARDS
Top TV comedy newcomer: Ardal O'Hanlon (Father Ted)
Best new TV comedy: Father Ted
1.06 What does 'Feck' mean?
It is NOT the Irish for fuck, although it is used in exactly the
same manner. It generally expresses the same emotions without being
too vicious or vulgar.
The word is spelt feic in Gaelic which is similar to the Gaelic verb
to look or to see. It may have originated as an exclamation to look
at something astonishing or bad.
1.07 What is Mrs Doyle's first name?
The answer to this is on page 52 of the scripts book.
1.08 Is Mrs Doyle married?
She was anyway whether she is now or not is unclear. However she
makes reference to her husband in 'Going To America'.
1.09 Will there ever be a new series?
We can be almost 100% certain there will be no more Father Teds.
Dermot Morgan has passed and so this makes it virtually impoossible
for any new episode. Also there is hope that unreleased footage from
Season 3 be on the new DVDs.
1.10 What was the deal with the start of the Christmas Special?
At the same time as Father Ted was shown there was a Catholic priest
light drama called Ballykissangel being shown in Ireland and
Britain. It was about a priest who was starting to care about a
woman in his parish, the Assumpta in the beginning dream sequence.
1.11 What's the name of the wrecked boat in the titles?
The Plassey. It which was shipwrecked in the 1960's. The Inisheer
islanders rescued the entire crew from the vessel during storm force
weather without the loss of a single sailor. In later years with the
strong Atlantic Ocean's waves the wreck thrown up on the rocks well
above high tide mark.
1.12 Is it my imagination or does Mrs Doyle mole move?
It does move. Between Season 1 and 2 it moves from the right side of
her face to the left, and in Season 3 it disappears completely.
1.13 Were some scenes deleted from the third season?
Yes, allegedly so. Episodes from the third season were edited out to
avoid causing distress to Dermot's family.
The last episode had Ted committing suicide by jumping off the ledge
outside 'It's Still Great Being A Priest '98'.
Here's what Graham Linehan said: "The dark ending of 'Ted' really,
really just didn't work and I can tell you exactly why. At the start
ofthe show, there was a banner at the conference saying 'It's Great
Being A Priest '98'. At the second conference (the one where a
depressed Ted joins Father Kevin on the ledge, Dougal's 'for ever
and ever and ever...' line ringing in his head), there should have
been a close-up of a banner that read "It's Still Great Being a
Priest". Because we didn't have this, the audience at the time
didn't understand that we were watching a second conference. They
seemed to think it was a flashback or something, and the scene
played to complete silence. So, when we were editing, the sight of
Ted standing on the ledge, thinking about whether or not to throw
himself off, while an audience stared in complete, deathly silence,
proved too much for us, and the idea of the montage was born."

----------------------------------------------------------------------
MISCELLANEOUS
=============
5.01 If Craggy Island has no major landmarks how come there is a
round tower in the background of the first episode?
The filming wasn't acually on an island but was shot on the mainland
so either they made a mistake or Ted just wanted to meet them at The
Field.
There are other locations on the island - The Holy Stone of
Clonrichert, Craggy Island Crazy Golf Course, etc.
5.02 Where is Craggy Island anyway?
In the show, Craggy Island is off the west coast of Ireland.
In real life, the island is Inisheer. Shooting locations were
Kilfenora, Ennistymon and Kilnaboy in Co.Clare. Natives of
Ennistymon can see the town extensively in 'The Mainland'.
The Funland scene in 'Good Luck Father Ted' was shot at Laytown.
The cliffs Ted hides Jack's drink in, in 'Cigarettes,Alcohol and
Rollerblading', are the Cliffs of Moher.
The Very Dark Caves in 'The Mainland' are the Ailwee Caves.
5.03 Where is the parochial house in real life?
The Parochial House is McCormack's at Glenquin, on the Boston road
from Kilnaboy.
The indoor scenes were actually shot in a studio in London.
5.04 Who shot JR?
Sue-Ellen's sister Kristen Shepard (Katherine Crosby). This was the
most famous shooting at least. He was shot once before this and
twice afterwards.
5.05 What were all those rides' names in Funland anyway?
* The Tunnel of Goats
* Freak Pointing
* The Ladder
* The Whirly-go-round
* The Spinning Cat
* Duck Startling
* Tarot Reading
* The Chair of Death
* The Pond of Terror
* Goading Fierce Man
* Hen Chariots
* THE SPIDER BABY! (this might have been just in Dougal's head
though)
* The O'Learys sweet stand
5.06 Didn't I see that in a film?
(Film References)
Good Luck Father Ted - Deliverance. Someone claimed the
shaven-headed banjo player and the dancing old man is a take-off of
the anal-rape-and-canoeing movie Deliverance, but Graham Linehan
seemed to be quite embarressed in retrospect of the quaint
Oirishness of the shot, in his DVD commentary.
A Christmassy Ted - the lingerie store is obviously a take on all
those Vietnam movies and war movies about a group of soldiers
generally.
The Plague - Pulp Fiction. In Tom's shed of death when he rumages
through his various weapons appears to be a take on the scene in
Pulp Fiction when Butch is looking for a weapon to use on Zed and
Maynard. Or it could just be funny.
Chirpy Burpy Cheap Sheep - 2001 A Space Oddyssey. Chris the sheep
lip-reads the two men's conversation like HAL reads Dave and Frank's
lips in 2001.
Night of the Nearly Dead - Night of the Living Dead.
Speed 3 - Speed (and Speed 2).
5.07 Didn't I read that in a book?
(Literature References)
Grant Unto Him Eternal Rest - When Dougal and Ted spend the night
with Father Jack's mortal remains, Ted looks soulfully out of the
window and mentions the falling snow. He's quoting from James
Joyce's short story 'The Dead'.
A Christmassy Ted - When Mrs Doyle tries to guess Todd Unctious'
name a similar scene is found in 'The Third Policeman'
5.08 Is Mattie Hislop based on a real person?
Yes. Matt Talbot(1856-1925) was a drunk who lived in Dublin at the
end of the 19th century. In 1884 he took a pledge and never touched
a drop of drink again. He went further though and imposed a harsh
regime on himself. He slept on planks with a wooden block for a
pillow. He ate only dry bread and cocoa without milk. He got up at
4am to go to Mass. When he died one morning on his way to Mass he
was found with a chain around his waist, another round his arm,
another chain below one knee and a cord around his other arm. He was
beatified recently and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.
5.09 Did Father Hernandez' video recorder travel back in time?
In 'The Passion Of Saint Tibulus', Father Hernandez presents the
priests with a video recorder. However in the previous episode
'Entertaining Father Stone, a very similar video can be seen on top
of the Parochial House telly. Originally 'The Passion Of Saint
Tibulus' was to be the first episode but was switched to third
becuase they thought 'Good Luck Father Ted' gave a better
introduction to the characters
