When The Cleveland Show wasn’t renewed in the spring, Family Guy fans
wondered when and how Cleveland might make his return to his original
home.

At Comic-Con in July, it was revealed that after spending the last four
seasons in Stoolbend headlining his own animated comedy, the genial,
mustachioed character would journey back to Quahog in an episode this
season titled “He’s Bla-ack.” Now, more details about his homecoming have
emerged. Family Guy executive producer Steve Callaghan says that the plan
is to fully reintegrate Cleveland into Family Guy by moving him into his
old house on Spooner Street with his blended family from The Cleveland
Show (including Donna, Roberta, Cleveland Jr., and Rallo). While
Cleveland will buddy up again with Peter, Quagmire, and Joe, he’ll have
some some obstacles to overcome in his welcome-back episode: When a
conflict arises between Lois and Cleveland’s wife, Donna, the two women
inform their husbands that they can’t be friends anymore either. “It’s up
to Cleveland and Peter to reconcile the women and see a way to allow
these two guys to be friends again,” Callaghan tells EW.

The episode, which is tentatively slated to air in the spring, will also
poke fun at Cleveland’s attempt to seek greener pastures by moving back
to his hometown of Stoolbend — and, yes, to anchor a spin-off series that
ultimately was canceled. “Because this is Family Guy, we have the
latitude to do some fourth-wall jokes here and there,” says Callaghan.
“There’s a scene where the guys pretty mercilessly take shots at
Cleveland for striking out on his own and for failing miserably, with not
very veiled fourth-wall references to Cleveland’s show.”

Multiple episodes featuring Cleveland are already in the works, including
one for next season in which he struggles to find an occupation and
identity for himself as he readjusts to life in Quahog. “It is suggested
to him by Peter that he become a therapist because he’s a good listener
and good at mediating conflict,” Callaghan says. “The consequence is that
he ends up wreaking havoc on Peter’s personal life by doing so.” While
the scenarios may be new, look for Cleveland to resume his former place
in the foursome. “I think the role will basically be what it was before
he left,” says Callaghan, “where he was one of Peter’s gang of buddies
who goes on various misadventures with him or gives him terrible advice.”

Oh, for fuck's sake! End this show, please! How can taking a failed
show and integrating it into a show that's in its decline result in
anything good?

A character who there at the beginning is coming back.
What about this can't you understand?

Don't like it? Don't watch it.

Says the one note douchebag. If it has to be explained to you, you'll
never understand.

But is there a pattern there? When a show spins off a character, if the
new show fails, is it common for the character to return to the main show?

I honestly can't remember.

I'm not sure it's ever happened before.

I understand it already. You're the one who doesn't understand that if
for whatever reason Family Guy isn't as good as it was, it has nothing
to do with the coming and going of a supporting character.

Understand now?

I for one don't see any problem with Cleveland returning (in fact,
Cleveland makes a better "fourth" than anybody else they have had).
The only problem I do see is introducing Donna, Roberta, and Rollo.
There's a reason (a) none of the shows listed above had any of the
characters created for the spinoff go to the main show, and (b)
Loretta was killed off. If they keep Roberta and Cleveland Jr. to the
same level of appearances as say, Tim and Arianna's son, it shouldn't
be too bad, but somehow I can see somebody coming up with the idea of
making Chris and Cleveland Jr. a "regular pair" somehow.

I'd say it's uncommon, except for guest spots. The Ropers were supposed
to be able to return, but shenanigans kept them from doing so. I don't
think Fish returned to Barney Miller. Did Joanie and/or Chachi return
to Happy Days as regulars? It's hard to think of genuine spin-offs of
regular characters that folded before the parent show.

The Ropers returned for one episode and Fish returned for two (one
immediately and one 3 years later.)

As I posted already, Joanie and Chachi did return to Happy Days as
regulars.

Yeah, the show's mythology was pretty much a fustercluck at that point.
Actually, AFAIAC, it all started to go downhill when they moved
production to L.A. When I look at my favorite episodes, it's amazing how
few there are from the L.A. period and how many there are from Vancouver.

You can be such a dick sometimes. They aren't just bringing back a
character. They are essentially integrating a failed show (with his
entire family that only existed in the new, failed show) with one in
its decline. There is no good that can come of this.

There should be prenuptials for this sort of thing.

If there's a spinoff, get it in writing ahead of time that the character
will be welcome back to the main series if the spinoff fails. Get it in
writing as to how much of the new show gets to be integrated into the
original show.

One can put other limits in. If the spinoff lasts longer than a certain
amount of episodes (I have no idea how many), the character doesn't get to
return.

Just map out what can happen in the event of a failure of the spinoff.
