They never were. It was a fictitious ambulance service. I think it was Bob
Cinader who made them up.
They are still my heros though. They are the real reason I became a paramedic!

The Emergency! Companion by Jim Page said Mayfair was indeed fictitious.
FYI, Goodhew was bought out by AMR three years ago. Schaeffer is still around.

james, you probably missed the FAQ answers I provided at some of the
EMERGENCY! werbsites.
There never was a Mayfair ambulance company in SoCal. The vehicles you saw
during the entire run of EMERGENCY! were from the film rental unit of CHASCO
(California Hearse and Ambulance Sales Company), a division of Van Nuys, CA
based Snyder Ambulance. The Mayfair signs were attached by the property
department at Universal Pictures Television.
I worked as an EMT for Snyder and had a couple of film car assignments, but
long after EMERGENCY!.
FYI: CHASCO film car units were (along with Schaefer) used regularly in
CHiP's and many other popular series of the era.

While there have been many mergers and buyouts of commercial ambulance firms
in Southern California, the Schaeffer firm - and their (Pomona area?)
Schaeffer-Cole division have not been part of that scheme.
While I am not sure at the moment of when and how the "Cole" name came to be
associated with Schaeffer (in that region only), the Schaeffer-Cole division
has been in existence for as long as I can remember. It is not the result of
any recent merger.

The Cole-Schaeffer division of Schaeffer Ambulance runs only in the San Gabriel
Valley cities of Pomona and West Covina.
