I keep hearing this rumor about an upcoming series produced by Majel Barrett
Roddenberry, starring Kevin Sorbo (Hercules). But I can't get the whole
picture of it..

Anybody know anything?

Thanks

Its going to be a space exploration type show. Sorbo is part of the crew of
the "spacefaring vessel". I'm fuzzy on this but I think I heard Bruce
Boxlieter might play the captain. Sounds like it might make a good show.

It's Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda [premeires in fall 2000], and Bruce
Boxlietner is going to be on one of the different series. Kevin Sorbo
is the Captain in Andromeda

It's about one of the last remaining starships of an Interstellar
Government called the Systems Commenwealth [something like dat] that's
mission is to restore peace in the galaxy after the Commonwealth was
destroyed in a civil war. The ship's supposed to be sentient [like
Moya in Farscape, but I beleive more cause there's supposed to be a
sort of love triangle involving the ship and the captain] and the crew
are a bunch of mercernaries hired by the Captain to help rebuild.

Go to www.cinescape.com, click on "television," then scroll down the list to
you get to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. This page has pretty much all of the
up-to-date info on the show.

The starship "Andromeda Ascendant" is not herself a living sentient creature.
The ship is equipped with a very sophisticated artificial intelligence
computer.

The series is being produced and written by Robert Hewlett Wolfe who has
written some of the best episodes of "Star Trek Deep Space Nine." Kevin Sorbo
will play the starship captain, who, in one of the Roddenberry derived touches,
may be called Dylan Hunt, after the character in "Genesis II" and "Planet
Earth." There are persistent but as yet unconfirmed rumors that "Babylon 5's"
Bruce Boxleitner will have a recurring role on the show.

The latest information on "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" can be found at
www.scifi.com/scifiwire. Sets are now being constructed and the principal
roles are in the process of being cast. Shooting will start in April or May
for a Fall 2000 syndication premiere. Co-executive producer Majel Barrett
Roddenberry describes the pilot script as having multiple plot lines going
simultaneously and a very fast and gritty feel, a sort of "E.R." in outer
space.

In the show, Kevin Sorbo plays Captain Dylan Hunt of the starship "Andromeda
Ascendant," part of the Systems Commonwealth, a vast empire which spans several
galaxies. The starship becomes trapped inside a black hole. (The hypergravity
of a black hole retards time. If you could somehow enter a black hole without
being destroyed a few seconds subjectively for you might be the equivalent of
several generations in the outside universe.)

Eventually Sorbo and company are pulled out of the black hole by an unsavory
female space pirate type, Beka, who will be the recurring villian. Three
hundred years have passed and the Commonwealth has fallen apart into civil war
and anarchy.
Sorbo decides to save the universe from the barbarism by using his ship as the
rallying point to revive the Commonwealth.

Didn't they use the name "Dylan Hunt" in the Roddenberry movie Genesis
II? And also a followup movie? Alex Cord played the character in the
original and John Saxon played him in the followup movie.

That's Genesis II. Earth II was a Spielburg TV series on NBC that was
canned. Still, I believe there was another series Roddenberry had developed
but didn't get off the ground well. His name was Dylan Hunt.

Yes, the show does re use the name.

Actually a more accurate title for the show might be "Robert Wolfe's and Majel
Roddenberry's Andromeda, inspired by unused Star Trek plots and unsold Gene
Roddenberry pilot elements and themes."

Dylan Hunt, the accidental hibernation, the collapse of civilization, a
benevolent galactic empire, the humanist notion that one man can make a
difference in the grand scheme of things, all of these are classic Roddenberry
touches.

Guess we will all find out this fall...

Its also an easy mistake as the first Dylan Hunt pilot was, as stated, GENESIS
II. THe second was PLANET EARTH.

Here's a couple of memories:
There was a weird rework of Planet Earth/Genesis Two featuring John
Saxon. More resembled the TV version of "Logan's Run" than
Roddenberry's originals.

And wasn't there a TV movie of the Week called Earth II about a space
station in the future. The thing was pretty high tech for ABC. It
featured some very cutting edge effects for the time and the media.

Yes, there was. And in fact, the recent series was EARTH 2, not II for that
reason.

ANDROMEDA sounds pretty good, it will essentially be the ST VOYAGER
premise ('Starfleet' ship out of its element sharing space with an
alien/enemy). Also allegedly very fast-paced a la E.R. and not like
other Trek (or EFC) shows.

Speaking of new series, I'm looking forward to Anne McCaffrey's new
series Dragon Riders of Pern to come out in 2001. Found it at
www.cinescape.com, also. I LOVE that series of books!! Hope they're
faithful to the storyline. I am still waiting for her to come out with
a book explaining what they're going to do after they got rid of
Thread.
