Has anyone noticed since 1994 that dueSOUTH character Benton Fraser has some
"fruity" aspects? I'm not trying to badmouth the best mountie Tuktoyaktuk has
to offer or the actual Paul Gross, but look at this:

- At the beginning of Victoria's Secret pt1, Fraser wasn't trying to get
intimate with Metcalfe. Doesn't this seem odd, eh?

- He somewhat gets the attraction of Turnbull (possibly bi). He responds with
the Tuktoyaktuk thank you kindly.

- And he just acts queer. And he taught Detective S R Kowalski the saying
"Something's queer."

I rest my case. The topic on dueSOUTH.Homepage.com starting Sunday is Fraser.

Apparently, he never saw MotB <"buddy breathing" and all that:>. Actually,
there are MANY slash related stories out there having do with almost every
character of dS (mostly involving Bennie and one of the Rays :)

However, there are also MANY nonslash stories out there. It just depends on how
you interpret it.

No, not really. Some people have restraint or morals by which they live, or can
resist temptation (well, he finally gave in).

Oh, never thought Turnbull was gay or bi, just odd (like a quart low in the
crankcase). Turnbull hero-worships Fraser.

That's an old expression, when the word queer meant strange or odd (before most
folks' time, like when 'gay' meant happy).

Nope. Where I'm from (West Texas) it's called being a gentleman. Ideally
and traditionally back home, the way a gentleman shows interest in a
lady is by following her around, looking sincere and soulful, keeping
his eyes and hands away from inappropriate places, and (if he's really
overcome with emotion) holding her hand. Maybe it's an example of
sociological Darwinism: male self-control does have its rewards in
other, ah, situations.

Huh?! Are you joking? He didn't rape her, no, that's not Fraser. But he
definitely wanted to get intimate.

"Should I walk you to your door?"
- Benton Fraser to Victoria Metcalf (said with hopeful gleam in his
eye, followed by obvious "let down" look when she said no)

(Charm was working overtime during this scene!)

Mary K - Keeper of Benny's runny pantyhose and his preparedness, or lack

Not really. I was with my last girlfriend -- including weekend sleepovers -- for
more than three months before we got more intimate. It's not that difficult to
hold yourself back, if you try, and it just makes the whole relationship better.

...Uh... I'm not sure what you're referring to. What does "gets the attraction

"He just acts queer". Hm. There's nothing like a vague generalization to really
pin things down.

I agree he was being a gentleman.
I also put it down, in part, to Fraser being unsure exactly how far Victoria
wanted the relationship to go. He does have a difficult time expressing his
feelings so he could have wanted to wait before opening himself up. He was
very obviously attracted to her from the second he saw her in the diner. She's
not stupid she could tell and wanted to string him along.

In the traditional sense of odd, yes. I don't know what *you're* talking
about.... (Well, yes, okay, I do, but I don't get it. Like Ed said, a
generalization like that hardly makes a case.)

>>And he taught Detective S R Kowalski the saying

No, that's pretty much just a Ray thing, isn't it? I have a friend who says it
all the time, you know, "That's queer" when something's strange. Far as I know,
*she's* not gay.

I'm surprised he didn't mention Ms. Fraser, or buddy-breathing, or "I thought
we were just friends, Ray," or "I love you, Fraser" / "And I you, Ray"....

For the record, i'm a devout slasher (have been since "Chasing Amy"- not
exactly an alumni, but....), but I don't think Fraser's gay. There's a
distinction there. Bi, possibly. In my slash universe, yes. Back to Chasing
Amy- I go with Alyssa's philosophy- you limit yourself to one sex, you cut out
half of your chance of finding your perfect soul mate. But that's beside the
point.

Strange examples you picked. I don't agree with them, but then, that's me.
(Though apparently i'm not alone.)

Fraser had been brought up with a code of chivalry unknown to (most of)
today's men. This makes his behaviour seem "odd". They spend the evening
together at his apartment, surrounded by candles, watching an old film - and
apart from a moment when their hands brush while preparing a meal, they
hardly touch. He had plenty of opportunity to make a pass, but didn't.
When he says, "Shall I walk you to your door?" I don't think this was with
anything more in mind than continuing the gentlemanly thing and ensuring she
got home safely. Of course, VM had to say no, because she wasn't really
staying at that hotel. And which is why, having failed to get him to make a
pass, she had to go back to his apartment and push a few more guilt buttons.

Get out! Where in West Texas? Well, being also from West Texas, I gotta agree
with you on the whole gentleman point. What is Fraser? He's Dudley Do-Right,
he's the perfect man. Well, to women at least, the perfect man wouldn't be all

It's staring us right in the face. Fraser didn't jump right into the sack with
Vicky because he was unable to track down the "cilantro." (aka "preparedness"
aka (whispering) c-o-n-d-o-m-s.) Must've been a full moon that night, or
something, and there was a rush on "cilantro." So, being the responsible scout
he is, he decided they'd have to settle for a movie and ice cream. Until, of
course, Vicky went home and brought back some of her own personal stash. Makes
perfect sense to me. I mean, if I had written the episode...

Oh, no, I didn't make this up (well, not totally :o)). When Fraser returns to
his apartment to find Vicky starting to cook their dinner, he apologizes for
taking so long with the shopping. He couldn't find the cilantro. He gives a
little spiel about how he did spy traces of it somewhere, but was unable to
track it down. Vicky asks him what he bought instead, and he answers "ice
cream." (Not exactly interchangeable foodstuffs, but when translated as in my
theory, it makes perfect sense, don't ya think?!)

I would hazard a guess that I've watched this ep more often than you have (?),
so I suppose insignificant scenes like this one stick with me more. BUT, is it
insignificant? The writers must have had a purpose for this little exchange,
and Ben does admit shortly thereafter that he's not quite prepared for
anything. So...putting two and two together...well, I have to admit, I never
understood math after 9th grade.

If you think you can stomach it (sorry for the pun), pop your video in,
assuming you've kept one, and see what you think. No need to torture yourself
with the whole 2 hours. It's right after Ben and Vicky leave the Patrician for
their next date (now that Ben finally has an appetite -- no double entendre
intended, I swear!).

Oh, BTW, what is "WCCOOMN" that comes after ROTFLOL? Did you make THAT up?

gone on and on and on beyond two eps; that was supposed to be the
keyboard depiction of "The Scream."

Guess I better stick to practicing my fan kicks and watching over the

Charm! You okay? Remember to breathe!

Oh, Mary. Good observation. I didn't catch that. Of course, the whole
time I was watching that ep, I was working out various missing scenes for
the ending. Kinda distracting.

Anyway, I don't think Fraser's gay or bi. He's all nice and straight.
Trust me on this. I know whereof I speak.
Ask nice, and I might tell you guys all about it. Or not. :)

Totally agree! No question!

Now, as to the naming of the welcome dancers, in light of the recent "cilantro"
theory, how about "Spice Girls?" What? Oh, really? That's already taken?
Shucks!

It was right after Fraser proved that the girl couldn't have been the murderer.
Ray was thrilled that he'd proved Thatcher's theory wrong... commence "I love
you Fraser", "And I you, Ray". 'Course, then Ray went on and said, "I mean
symbolically." "Of course." What the hell is symbolically? <g>
Anyway. That's when.

Now that is like the red flag to the bull. Now no trolling and no
inciting of sensitive ng members on their forbidden topics. Between the
smoke coming out of Charm's ears and Demeter's fire, we'll fry the
newsgroup servers and then where will we be.

That part about having fire and not being afraid to use it conjures up images
of a burning cabin up in the wilds of Northern Canada. <g>

O.K., this is sort of OT except that PG is on RG and somebody just asked about it
and I referred them to some RG site. I wandered back there myslef for a quick
giggle, and when I found this quote from the show couldn't resist posting it for
you (under-18-ng member please cover your eyes):

broken, but it's fun to think about.

MaryK, are you implying something? Hmmm? (Demeter glares in Mary's general
direction, holding a good-size fireball)

Well, since Charm asked so nice, I'll tell you SOME of my story. This is
true by the way, which is why I'm not saying any names.

Two of my closest friends are quite often thought to be gay, which they
definately are not, as the y'd be the first to shout. They get that a lot.
They only give people cause to wonder when they have a little too much to
drink. Then even I wonder. Scary.

Anyway, that's how I know Benny is not gay. He and RayV's relationship is
just like that of my friends. Any of you think that one would gladly die
for the other? I do. In fact, Ray has come close, ne? They seem to know
each other's thoughts? See Red, White or Blue if you doubt that one.
Simply put, one can't live without the other.

What about RayK you ask? Or don't ask. Well, I think those two are more
like brothers than the soulmate thing Benny and RayV have going on.

Lots of my friends are musicians, artists, writers, and you'd be surprised how
randomly, in the south at least, non-neanderthal types are instantly assigned
erroneous labels. If you'd like to see an interesting article on this by a

Hee woe to the guy who likes show tunes...

But just as there are folks in those fields who are straight, there
are many gays out there in traditional "neanderthal" type occupations
too <g>. Me? I could have bought into the notion that Fraser was gay
maybe but only before referenced Victoria ("There was a woman
once...").

IMO the guy who posted his theory was doing a wee bit of mild trolling
;-) I bet he wanted to see if the topic would get a rise outta ya.
But this is alt.tv.due-south. We've been trolled before and saavy
enough to not take the bait...

Compared to the actors character in EFC, Turnbull is missing the ENTIRE 12 pack
(in other words, he's 12 cans short of a party pack.), but he's still lovable
in a rather goofy way.

I used to use the word queer before I found out that it was used in a bad
manner towards gay and bi people. Then I stopped using it. Bummer what life
does to some things.
