I think you well worded observations are an answer to your question.
David Marciano is a talented and likable actor who seems to have
a plotential carreer beyond DS.

David Marciano signed a development contract with CBS after "Due South" was
cancelled and before the series was revived (the contract has expired now).
He wasn't available without paying a penalty to get out of the contract early.
He has indicated that he would be interested in continuing as Ray Vecchio. I
have been writing to Alliance asking that Mr. Marciano come back as a
recurring character or frequent guest star. If anyone is interested the
address is:

Alliance Communication Corp.
121 Bloor Street East Suite 1400
Toronto, Ontario
Canada M4W 3M5

or
"Due South"
940 Lansdowne Avenue
Toronto, Ontario
Canada M6H 4G9

Letters might help and certainly couldn't hurt. Susan SFult...@aol.com

Marciano does guest work on US TV. He is too busy doing that to fly to Toronto and
shack up there for months on end. However, schedule and scripts permitting,
maricano may reprise his role periodically, and has done so for the season
premiere.

Callum Keith Rennie's character's full name is Stanley Raymond Kopalski, and is a
thirtysomething detective in the Chicago PD.

Back story: Ray went undercover to infiltrate a Chicago crime family, and his Riv
(# 3) caught fire and took a swim in Lake Ontario...err, Michigan. To keep the
District seemingly stable - in case of moles - Kopalski has been reassigned to take
Veccio's place in the District AND at the Veccio homestead. As such, the District
and Consulate personnel, to maximise the charade, are to refer to Stanley as "Ray"
until Ray gets back - provided that Ray comes back in one piece, that is.
Stanley's pseudo-Ray has led to some sarcasm on Francesca's part. Fraser refers to
Stanley as "Ray", in part because of the literalness with which Fraser follows
orders, and partially out of habit.

Yep. It was an estimated $14K US paycut. Of course, the show is syndicated
but if you or I took a paycut of equal amount, we'd have to work back up to
our present salary too. A tough decision.

It seems to me that pay was also a factor...something like $14K less per

episode. Anyone else remember this??

Yep but now that you mention it, I don't remember where I heard it. I
think probably from this newsgroup or the DS-List.

I've been coming across a lot of articles lately that indicated he and PG
were not the best of buddies off camera, either.

That is quite a pay cut. Then how much would he make after the pay cut? I have
no idea how much he made while on the series when it was in primetime. I used
to to Movie/TV extra work and worked for $40.00 a day, 8 hours or less, and
would have loved to take a $14,000.00 pay cut because that would mean I was
making a heck of a lot more than $40.00, and after -$14,000.00 it would have
been still a lot I bet. LOL. Anyone wanna hire me, an ex Extra who can act?
LOL. J/K. Due South production company, here I am the next side kick on Due
South or at least a guest star. :).

Thanks,

James

You referring to this week's _McLeans_(with Gross as the cover feature) as
being one of them? I noted the reference to Mr. Marciano referring to PG
as "Mr. Gross", myself. I hope that isn't a sign of something...and I
really would not care to comment further on _that_ topic. Makes me a more
than a little uncomfortable...

The _Macleans_ article pegged the pay cut at 40% of his earlier salary.
And you do have to remember that he was spending 8 months or so out of the
year away from home and wife and across the border to play Vecchio. That
can put more than a few strains on a person.

That he is apparently still willing to try to come to terms speaks well of
the couple. Hopefully, something can be worked out to bring Mr. Marciano
back aboard on whatever basis is workable for both Alliance and himself.

Give it time. The writing is solid, and Keith Callum Rennie is a very
talented actor. If you want to get a feel for his skill and range,
check out his wildly divergent roles in Bruce Macdonald's "Hard Core
Logo", and "Double Happiness" (whose writer-director-star I can't
recall off-hand, but Rennie plays the boyfriend, if I remember right).

If you attended RCW 97 and want to offer any input on the convention,
you have until November 15th to fill out the survey, which is located at

http://fly.hiwaay.net/~warydbom/rcw1997/survey.htm

Or, e-mail me directly if you'd like a text copy.

Thanks!

The writer and the star of "Double Happiness" are not the same woman.
The star is Sandra Oh, who will be appearing with CKR in an upcoming Don
McKellar movie called "Last Night." (Actually it's not clear to me whether
their characters will cross paths much in this movie, but they are both in
it.) The writer-director of DH was Mina Shum, who does appear in the movie
as a casting director or similar animal. CKR is indeed the boyfriend, and
he's very appealing at it.

To my knowledge the only two Due South conventions held were the
original RCW 139 and the 'sequel', RCW 139: Due It Again. Both were held
in Toronto because all the locations for fans to scout are there (since the
show is filmed there) and virtually all the cast and crew (and studio) are
in Toronto.

There will be a convention held in June (I believe) in England. It's a fan-run
con, just like the RCW's.

We've got info and such on our site:

I too like the new Ray. I caught a few episodes of the old Due
South and Ray #1 didn't move me at all (my opinion only from all
I've read)! I like the energy of the new Ray and his obvious
insecurities that the Mountie can lend his personal inner strength
to. Lots of potential IMHO

I absolutely agree with you. This new Ray has no redeeming qualities that I
can see. No sense of humor at all.
